(The Characteristics of a Great Team) Lesson 1: An Effective Team ~ Part 1 The Big Idea: Teams possess certain characteristics that make them effective. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord... For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many are one body, so also is Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:4-5, 12 Great Teams Possess: 1. A common or. 2. skills and contribution. 3. Strong and. Examples of Biblical Teams: Look up the following Scriptures and summarize how the idea of team is seen. 1. Matthew 10:1-4 2. 1 Corinthians 12:1-26 3. Genesis 1:26-27 Teamwork Lesson 1 Page 1

A Question to Consider: Where do you begin to create and maintain and effective team? So Where Do You Begin? The kind of people you recruit for your team should be determined by the goals you believe God has given you. Look for appropriate GIFTS in people for each position: G ~ GIFTED MEMBERS Look for specific gifts and abilities in other people that are crucial to achieve your goals. I ~ INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE Look for people who have influence with others. F ~ FAITHFUL WORKERS Look for people who are already faithful Christian commitments they have made. T ~ TEACHABLE SPIRIT Look for people who are willing to learn and be flexible with teammates. S ~ SERVANT S HEART Look for people who want to serve others, not gain recognition. What Makes an Effective Team? 1. An effective team. The foundation of a successful team is. WHY? A. : People go the first mile because of a sense of duty. They go the second mile because of relationship. B. : Leaders always touch a heart before they ask for a hand C. : Good leaders always host the conversation and relationships of their life. They initiate conversation as a host rather than wait to be served by others, as a guest. As a team, do we care for one another? Teamwork Lesson 1 Page 2

2. An effective team. What are your team s top three priorities? 1. 2. 3. As a team, do we know and act on what is important? Teamwork Lesson 1 Page 3

When picking your team... A Thought to Ponder: Therefore brethren, seek from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. Acts 6:3 Red Auerbach, long-time president of the Boston Celtics, said, How you select people is more important than how you manage them once they re on the job. If you start with the right people, you won t have problems later on. You have to begin with the right raw materials in order to create a winning team. ~ Developing the Leaders Around You What Difference Would It Make: What difference would it make if your team was intentional about: Caring for each other Knowing and practicing what is important Teamwork Lesson 1 Page 4

(The Characteristics of a Great Team) Lesson 2: An Effective Team ~ Part 2 The Big Idea: Teams possess certain characteristics that make them effective. What Makes an Effective Team? (continued) 3. An effective team. Why is growing together, as a staff, so important? A. The growth determines the organization s growth. B. Life and society are constantly. C. A leader cannot lead a follower where he/she has personally grown. D. The leadership team must stay on the. E. Leaders must to stay in front. As a team, are we growing together? Teamwork Lesson 2 Page 1

A Question to Consider: Do you consider what is best for the team above your own individual rights/agenda? 4. An effective team. The truth in a nutshell: Individualism wins trophies, but teamwork wins championships! A Code of Cooperation: A. your load. B. other team members. C. their value. D. to add value to them. E. Come together ready to. F. See the. G. Give up. H. Represent the not yours. I. Privately and publicly one another. J. Accept for the team s standings. As a team, do we place the team s interest above our own? Teamwork Lesson 2 Page 2

I. are pure. J. are received by all. As a team, do we have the right chemistry? Teamwork Lesson 2 Page 3

6. An effective team. The Niche Principle : People who occupy a special place on the team feel special and perform in special way. Team niches humanize teamwork. (Philip VanAuken) List your team members and identify their roles: What is your unique role on the team? As a team, do we understand and appreciate the roles of others? Teamwork Lesson 2 Page 3

7. An effective team. The team knows where it stands because there is a scoreboard that everyone can see. Players glance at the scoreboard continually during a game. When the game is over, at least they know if they have won or lost. (Many ministries don t enjoy this luxury!) What areas should be on your scoreboard? (i.e. conversions, new soldiers, new leaders, giving, etc.) As a team, do we score well in these areas? Teamwork Lesson 2 Page 4

A Thought to Ponder: 9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: 10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 What Difference Would It Make: What difference would it make if your team was intentional about: Growing Together Placing the needs of the team above individual rights Having a chemistry that fits Realizing everyone plays a special role Knowing exactly where the team stands Teamwork Lesson 2 Page 5

(The Characteristics of a Great Team) Lesson 3: An Effective Team ~ Part 3 The Big Idea: Teams possess certain characteristics that make them effective. What Makes an Effective Team? (continued) 8. An effective team. In ministry, THE BENCH represents... A. players. B. players. C. A place for. D. A place for. E. A place for. F. A place for. As a team, are we developing a strong bench? Teamwork Lesson 3 Page 1

Question to Consider: Do you enjoy being a part of your team? Why/Why not? 9. An effective team. There is no success without sacrifice. If I succeed without sacrifice, then it is because someone who went before me made the sacrifice. It I sacrifice and do not see success then someone who follows will reap success from my sacrifice. What blessings have we received that we did not pay for? What sacrifice will we give so that the next generation will have success? As a team, is our sacrifice sufficient to provide success to the next generation? Teamwork Lesson 3 Page 2

10. An effective team. Ten Questions the Team Should Ask: 1. Do we each other? Respect and trust go hand in hand. 2. Do we have for each other? Are you honestly interested in the welfare of your colleagues? 3. Do team members feel free to openly? In an environment of open and free communication, a team can achieve anything. 4. Do we our team s goals? Without a clear focus on team goals, even the best teams will drift. 5. Do we have a to those goals? Belief in goals should be concrete, not abstract. 6. Do we make good use of each member s? Do members feel they are making a worthwhile contribution? 7. Do we handle successfully? Success is judged by how conflict is handled within the team as a whole. 8. Does participate? The very word team implies that everyone participates. 9. Do we respect our individual?
