Introduction to Poetry By: Billy Collins I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light like a color slide or press an ear against its hive. I say drop a mouse into a poem and watch him probe his way out, or walk inside the poem s room and feel the walls for a light switch. I want them to waterski across the surface of a poem waving at the author s name on the shore. But all they want to do is tie the poem to a chair with rope and torture a confession out of it. They begin beating it with a hose to find out what it really means. Claim:

The Perfect Friend by Shannen Wrass Today I found a friend who knew everything I felt she knew my weakness and the problems I ve been dealt. She understood my wonders and listened to my dreams, she listened to how I felt about life and love and knew what it all means. Not once did she interrupt me or tell me I was wrong she understood what I was going through and promised she d stay long. I reached out to this friend, to show her that I care to pull her close and let her know how much i need her there. I went to hold her hand to pull her a bit nearer and I realized this perfect friend I found was nothing but a mirror. Claim:

Still I Rise By: Maya Angelou You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? 'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops. Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you? Don't you take it awful hard 'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines Diggin' in my own back yard.
You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I'll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I've got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history's shame Up from a past that's rooted in pain I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave.,,.
