Arianna stared at the wedding invitation and smiled. Her cousin Jessica was getting married, and she d asked Arianna to be the flower girl. Arianna couldn t wait to wear a beautiful dress and toss flower petals along the aisle. But flower girls are supposed to be little, Meegan complained. Jessica should ve picked me. I m younger. Meegan, Mom said, it s Jessica s wedding. She and Arianna have always been very close. If she wants Arianna to be the flower girl then you should be happy for your sister. Meegan stomped off, heading toward her room. Mom, Arianna said, her mood deflated, is the flower girl really supposed to be little, like Meegan s age? Mom shook her head. Not necessarily. But usually? Mom took the invitation from Arianna. You should be honored, sweetie. You re going to be the best flower girl ever. Arianna gave a weak smile before walking outside. She sat on the porch swing and thought about the wedding. A few minutes later, Meegan came outside wearing her Easter dress and holding a basket. See, I d make a perfect flower girl, she said to Arianna. Meegan walked around the yard collecting dandelions. Once she was finished, she walked up the driveway sprinkling flowers on both sides of her.

The screen door opened again and this time Mom walked out holding a photo album. She looked at Meegan. Very good, sweetheart. Maybe Aunt Becky will ask you to be the flower girl in her wedding later this year. Meegan s face lit up. You think so? I ll tell her you ve been practicing. Plus you can watch Arianna at Jessica s wedding. You ll be a pro by the time Aunt Becky gets married. While Meegan pranced around excitedly, Arianna lowered her head. I don t think I want to be the flower girl in Jessica s wedding. Can t you tell her to let Meegan do it? I could, but would you really want to hurt Jessica s feeling like that? Arianna shook her head. Here, Mom opened the photo album and pointed to a picture of Jessica. She looked around the same age as Arianna. See, Jessica was the flower girl in Aunt Leslie s wedding and she was your age. I like her crown of flowers, Arianna said. Mom leaned close. Jessica told me she wanted you to wear that exact crown. Arianna smiled. Really? I d love to. So you ll be the flower girl? Mom asked. I can t wait, Arianna said, already picturing herself wearing the crown.
