Panasonic Toughpad FZ-R1 FAQs Updated: July 22, 2015 Chip and PIN Security What is chip and PIN? Chip and PIN is a payment card technology developed by Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) that uses an embedded microchip in the payment card to prevent counterfeiting and increase transaction security. With chip and PIN, the cardholder must provide a PIN that matches their security profile or a signature to verify every transaction. Because chip and PIN cards use cryptographic keys for transactions, they require special POS hardware. The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-R1 is the first, enterprise-grade Windows tablet to feature integrated chip and PIN and EMV support. Is integrated chip and PIN technology important? With liability shifting from credit card companies to retailers in the U.S., integrated EMV isn t an option. It s a requirement. As the new security standard for payment card transactions, integrated chip and PIN technology is a major component of a comprehensive data protection strategy for hardware, software and other elements that impact data security. What is the difference between a credit card with a magnetic stripe and one with an EMV chip? Currently in the United States, cardholder information is stored on a magnetic stripe found on the back of the card. Soon, all cards will also contain an Europay, MasterCard, Visa (EMV) chip that replaces cardholder information with cryptographic keys. Cards with EMV chips increase transaction security and are more difficult to counterfeit. Unlike a magnetic stripe card, a payment card with a chip must be read with a special device that decodes the encrypted information and securely processes the credit transaction. This EMV device requires PIN entry or a signature to validate the card owner. This is commonly referred to as chip and PIN or chip and signature. What is EMV? EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa. EMV technology is currently the global standard for payment processing with credit cards and debit cards. The United States is one of the last countries to migrate to EMV. Currently in the United States, a cardholder s information is stored on a magnetic stripe found on the back of the card. EMV technology uses a chip and cryptographic keys to make payment cards more difficult to counterfeit and help protect against fraud at the point of sale. What is PCI? PCI is the Payment Card Industry Security Council. They set standards that ensure a customer s card data is kept secure throughout the entire Europay, MasterCard, Visa (EMV) transaction process. How does the Toughpad FZ-R1 help secure customer s data? 1

The Toughpad FZ-R1 is the first enterprise-grade Windows tablet to feature integrated chip and PIN technology. Competing solutions rely on consumer-grade mobile devices with external peripherals to support the increased security measures demanded by chip and PIN technology. In addition, the FZ-R1 uses hardware-level features to provide a truly advanced level of transaction and customer data security. The Toughpad FZ-R1 is the first world s first and only all-in-one Windows tablet equipped an integrated EMV reader for secure chip and PIN payments. Featuring a secure Intel processor, the Toughpad FZ-R1 is purpose-built to take almost any form of digital payment including chip and PIN, magnetic stripe and Near Field Communication (NFC) payments like Google Wallet and Apple Pay *. Sleek and stylish, the Toughpad FZ-R1 has a built-in capacitive PIN pad and smartcard reader that meets PCI-PTS V4.0 and EMV Level 1 2, plus an encrypted Magnetic Stripe Reader (MSR) that supports thirdparty E2EE and tokenization solutions. Who is the Toughpad FZ-R1 for? The Toughpad FZ-R1 is ideal for anyone who accepts a payment for goods and services, especially retail and food service environments where the coming shift in liability will mandate new PCI and EMV certified devices for PIN entry, and EMV readers with chip and PIN / chip and signature technology. How does the Toughpad FZ-R1 support omni-channel strategies? Combining the Toughpad FZ-R1 with quality applications and analytics can help brick-and-mortar sales forces counter the sales-deadening product and pricing knowledge customers carry on their smartphones. The FZ-R1 can fortify staff with additional information such as available inventory, customer preferences, purchase history and rewards incentives. Successfully integrated, this rich data drives sales capture, boosts sales and lifts corresponding key metrics such as inventory turns. In addition, the FZ-R1 features an Intel processor with more than enough processing power to support POS applications, productivity apps and the rich media applications it takes for a true omni-channel experience. Benefits How does the Toughpad FZ-R1 benefit consumers? The Toughpad FZ-R1 is the first enterprise-grade Windows tablet solution with integrated chip and PIN EMV technology. When a server or sales representative can process secure payments on the spot, customers don't need to hand over their cards for processing at some distant POS register. By allowing the customer to keep their cards in their own hands, the FZ-R1 eliminates the possibility that someone will copy their card number and security code. Closing this final link in the security chain ensures that the chip and PIN technology isn t undone by a thief armed with simple pen and paper. How does the Toughpad FZ-R1 benefit CEOs? The Toughpad FZ-R1 is a semi-rugged mobile POS operating system that integrates easily with existing infrastructure and scales to meet future needs so you can maximize investments in store technology. Its semi-rugged design reduces lifetime costs, while its mobile design increases productivity and puts advanced computing power in your employees hands. Because it is purpose-built for chip and PIN transactions, it drastically reduces the risk of credit card fraud, increases transaction security and helps protect your customers and business. How does the Toughpad FZ-R1 benefit CIOs? The Toughpad FZ-R1 protects against fraud at the mobile point of interaction (POI) and guards against fraudulent credit cards. Security controls like integrated chip and PIN (EMV Level 1 and Level 2) encrypted MSR heads and available E2EE and tokenization ensure that card data is kept secure throughout the entire transaction process. In addition to its security features, the Toughpad FZ-R1 runs Windows 8.1, which simplifies migration to a mobile POS environment because it requires less development, less training and deploys faster. How does the Toughpad FZ-R1 benefit CFOs? The Toughpad FZ-R1 offers a stable product road map and longer life cycles, which means that hardware is sustainable and has a lower cost of ownership compared to alternative solutions. Because it runs 3

Windows 8.1 and has a wide range of capabilities, the FZ-R1 can fulfill the duties of multiple devices, including rugged handhelds, barcode readers, payment devices, communication devices, tablets and more, all of which are friendly to the bottom line. How does the Toughpad FZ-R1 benefit store operations managers? - It s a mobile POS that increases customer engagement and loyalty by making shopping more informative and efficient. With the FZ-R1, customers can place orders and check out right on the sales floor with complete confidence their data is kept secure. - It assists selling. The FZ-R1 puts high-impact presentations, product information and demos in each salesperson s hands. - It provides Real-Time Research. With the FZ-R1, salespeople can shorten the sales cycle by researching product questions and checking inventory on the fly from anywhere in the store. - It helps manage inventory. The FZ-R1 is a powerful, Windows 8.1 tablet that can integrate with your existing POS and inventory management systems. Personnel with an FZ-R1 can assess realtime inventory levels and transmit instant restocking orders from anywhere in the store or warehouse. - It makes promotions and merchandising easier and more accurate. The large, high-resolution screen on the FZ-R1 renders mechanizing and plan-o-gram applications in vivid detail so employees have an accurate view of sample store promotions and layouts. Since the FZ-R1 has optional onboard cameras, employees can take HD photos of their completed promotional work and email them to management to demonstrate compliance. Toughpad FZ-R1 vs. the competition Some competitors claim integrated EMV or on-screen PIN entry. What makes the Toughpad FZ-R1 different? Some competing products process chip and PIN transactions by combining a peripheral attachment and an Android device running a proprietary POS application. While this may be suitable for smaller businesses, these systems can t run enterprise POS applications or Windows, nor are they particularly durable. The Toughpad FZ-R1 is geared for enterprise applications. Developed on the proven Toughpad platform, the FZ-R1 is a semi-rugged device with an integrated smart card reader and physical PIN pad, plus a tablet computer running Windows on an Intel Celeron processor with a Trusted Platform Module (TPM). It is a durable and flexible device, powerful enough to run business and inventory applications as well as enterprise-grade POS applications. If your business requires a secure mobile payment solution that can support true omni-channel strategies, increase productivity and take the abuse of life on the sales floor, then the Toughpad FZ-R1 is the only mobile POS solution capable of meeting your needs. What is more expensive: the Toughpad FZ-R1 or a consumer tablet with peripheral attachments? Low-cost consumer tablet solutions with peripheral attachments have driven the adoption of mobile POS in the retail and food services markets, but many retailers have learned the painful shortcomings of products that are not purpose-built for the realities of a fast-moving business. Third-party peripheral devices, like sleds, barcode scanners and payment attachments, quickly drive up the cost of the of the consumer tablet, closing the gap between a consumer solution and a purpose-built enterprise solution. The Toughpad FZ-R1 replaces all the third-party sleds, readers and scanners with a single, integrated device that drastically reduces complexity and device management. With the FZ-R1, there is only one 4

machine to charge, provision, update and track. It is built on a stable platform that is designed for a longer life cycle, making it ideal for enterprise. When you calculate the value of the Toughpad FZ-R1 tablet s features and add in the proven, low failure rates of Toughpad devices and our standard 3-year warranty, you may find that the FZ-R1 offers a lower total cost of ownership over a 3-to 5-year period than any other mobile POS solution.
