Eötvös Loránd University Faculty of Science
Brief History of the Faculty 1635 the predecessor of ELTE was founded in Trnava (natural sciences were taught at the Faculty of Arts) 1777, 1784 the university moved to Buda, then to Pest (these were separate towns at that time, and merged into Budapest in 1873) 1949 the independent Faculty of Science was established 1950 the university was named after Baron Loránd Eötvös (a famous Hungarian physicist remembered today largely for his work on gravitation and surface tension, and the invention of the torsion pendulum) 1953, 1957 the faculty was split into two, then united again 2001 the faculty moved to the new Lágymányos Campus 2003 the faculty was restructured for educational reasons (two departments were detached to form the Faculty of Informatics, while the relevant departments of the abolished Faculty of Primary School Teacher Training were incorporated)
