Technip Germany Coke Calcining Plants June 2008

Introduction TECHNIP is co-operating closely with METSO Minerals, Inc., USA (KvS technology) for about 25 years on the implementation of coke calcining plants and has since 1993 an exclusive agreement for many countries in the world. METSO Minerals, Inc. is the world s leading supplier of coke calcining technology, having furnished 50 plants representing approximately 70% of the world s coke calcining capacity. TECHNIP designed and executed 6 out of 15 Calciner Projects worldwide. This includes the latest and biggest green-field Calciner Project, the ALBA Petroleum Coke Calciner Plant in Bahrain with a production capacity of 450,000 ton per year. 2

Description of Technology Petroleum Coke Calcining is a process whereby green or raw petroleum coke is thermally upgraded to - remove associated moisture and volatile combustion matter - improve critical physical properties like electrical conductivity real density oxidation characteristics The feedstock "Green Coke" is a by-product of the coker process in oil refineries. 3

Application of Calcined Coke Calcined petroleum coke is an important industrial commodity linking the oil refining and metallurgical / chemical industries. Calcined petroleum coke is required in: the aluminium industry to manufacture anodes for the aluminium potlines the steel industry to manufacture carbon and graphite electrodes as carbon raiser the chemical industry as a feedstock for the production of Titanium Dioxide by the modern chloride process route 4

Calcining Trends PETROLEUM COKE CALCINING may be achieved in a : Rotary Kiln or Rotary Hearth or Shaft Kiln The trend nowadays is to build rotary kiln types only due to : flexibility in accepting a wide range of green coke feed qualities production capacity consistent calcining conditions due to the rotation of the Kiln low percentage of dust content in the product higher calcined coke grain stability good operation experience low maintenance and operating cost process 7
