Are You in Compliance? Recent changes by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) improve safety standards related to electrical arc flash for power generation, distribution, and transmission equipment. The updated standards create a unified and up-to-date set of requirements to help employers more effectively establish work practices to protect both employees and contractors. Employers that operate or maintain electric power generation, transmission, or distribution lines or equipment must follow OSHA 1910.269. (Scan the QR code at right to read the regulation). This rule applies to utilities and industrial workplaces, if certain types of equipment are present. Key milestones that need to be met: January 1, 2015: Incident Heat Energy Estimation -- Companies are required to perform a complete hazard assessment. The employer must make reasonable estimates of incident energy. April 1, 2015: Protective Equipment and Fire Resistant (FR) Clothing - Utilizing the incident energy study, employers shall provide the appropriate FR clothing and proper personal protection equipment. Take the preventative measures to protect your employees, your contractors, and assets to ensure your company is in compliance with the amended 1910.269. The process starts with performing incident energy studies on any new equipment or any equipment that has an incident energy study that is five years or older. Hi-Line is ready to assist you with your compliance efforts.
