This is used for file, folder or data restorations and for Exchange or Active Directory recoveries. 1. Logon to the NAS Device. From the Business Continuity System select the Management Console option from the Backup Management menu. 2. Click on the Explore Backup link under the Tasks section. Page 3
3. Click the Next button. 4. Click the Browse button. Page 4
5. Select the Image to mount then click the Open button. This is your point-in-time you want to backup from. Page 5
6. Backups are stored on the D: volume. You can select other backup locations (USB Drive, Network Share, etc). Page 6
7. Enter the encryption password (this is the password entered to create the SPK file) then click the OK button. Page 7
8. Click the Next button 9. Verify the backup image selected or you may select another backup image then click the Next button. Page 8
10. Accept the default parameters and click the Next button. The wizard automatically assigns an available drive letter. You may select it manually. Mount backup images as Read-Only. Page 9
11. Click the Finish button. This is the backup image chain. This lists the files required to restore files from the point-in-time you selected back to the Base Image. Page 10
12. Once the point-in-time mount is created windows explorer will open. The drive letter selected in the Explore Backup wizard will now represent the explored Server Volume s point-in-time. Page 11
Dismounting a Restoration Volume These instructions walk you through dismounting a point-in-time restore volume. It is very important to dismount restore volumes once you have completed your restoration. This frees up resources on the NAS. 1. Logon to the NAS Device and select Management Console from the Backup Management menu. 2. Click on the Dismount Backup Image link. Page 12
3. Click on the Next button 4. Select the checkbox next to the volume to dismount and click the Next button 5. Select the Volume(s) you would like to dismount. Page 13

7. Verify the options you selected and click on the Finish button. File, Folder and Data Restore 1. First mount your point-in-time restoration volume. See Mounting a Restoration volume for instructions. 2. To access the newly mounted drive open up Explorer. Click on Tools > Windows > Explorer. 3. Browse to the volume you mounted and select the files or folders you would like to restore. These can be copied to an external USB device or to another networked device. If you are connecting to another networked device, you will need the credentials for it. For example, if you are connecting to a windows domain server, you will need domain credentials. This is done by mapping a drive or connecting via the UNC (universal naming convention) path, e.g. //servername/sharename. You can also connect to admin shares using the format //servername/sharename$. Do not join the NAS to a domain under any circumstances for security reasons Page 15
4. To map a network drive, from the Explorer window click on Tools > Map Network Drive. 5. Select a free drive letter from the drop-down menu and enter in the network share path you want to connect to. You will need to provide Domain credentials if you are connecting to a Domain system. Page 16
6. Click on the Finish button. Exchange Mailbox/Message Restore 1. First mount your restoration volume. See Mounting a Backup Image for instructions. You will need to mount the volume that contains your Exchange Database File and your Exchange log files. If these are on separate volumes then both volumes will need mounted. 2. Click on the Exchange Recovery Tool menu. 3. This launches the Ontrack PowerControls window. 4. Click on the Open Source icon. 5. Browse to the path for your source file (*.edb, *.pst, *.cas) and your log file path (*.log, *.pat, *.chk). Sometimes the Temporary File Path is deleted. If prompted, select yes to recreate the Temporary File Path. Page 17
6. The Exchange Stores will load in the Source window. 7. You can expand a Store and browse to an individual message. Page 18
8. Right click on the message and select Export from the menu. 9. Choose whether you want the message exported as a message or as text and the location for the message. You can browse or manually enter a location. If you are exporting more than once the files WILL be overwritten if the path is not changed. 10. Then click the Export button. 11. To export to a PST file, click on the Open PST Target file icon. Page 19
12. Browse to your PST file and click open. 13. To export to an Exchange Server, click on the Open Target Exchange Server icon. 14. Enter in the Mailbox name and Server Name. Click on the OK button. 15. To export to a Content Analysis File, click on the Open Content Analysis File icon. 16. Browse to your Content Analysis File and click on the Open button. Page 20
Connecting to Exchange 2007 Mailboxes To connect to an Exchange 2007 mailbox, the following steps need to be followed: 1. Create a test account in Active Directory. 2. Assign the test account full permission on the mailbox you with to open. a. Open the Exchange Management Console. b. Go to Recipient Configuration. c. Select the mailbox you want to be able to connect to. d. Choose Assign, Manage Full Access permission. e. Add the test account. 3. Use the test account credentials to open the destination mailbox in the Exchange Recovery Tool while connecting to the Exchange server. Exchange Restoration (Database Only) To recover the Exchange database, a soft recovery needs to be performed. Types of Recovery There are two forms of recovery: Soft recovery A transaction log replay process that occurs when a database is remounted after an unexpected stop, or when transaction logs are replayed into an offline file copy backup of a database. Hard recovery A transaction log replay process that occurs after restoring a database from an online backup. For more details on Soft Recovery and Hard Recovery in Exchange Server 2003, please refer to: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997761(exchg.65).aspx Logon to the NAS and mount the appropriate backup image of the drive where the Exchange database is located. If the Exchange transaction logs are on a different drive, also mount the image of the drive where the log files are located. Create a temporary folder on the NAS to restore the files to. In this example, name the folder restore on the root of the C: drive. (C:\restore) Copy the Exchange database and logs from the mounted images into one folder i.e. C:\restore. Copy the following files from the Exchange server s bin directory (normally C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin\) to C:\restore on the NAS. Eseutil.exe Ese.dll Jcb.dll Exosal.dll Exchmem.dll One you have copied the database, log files and binaries, proceed with the soft recovery. On the NAS, open a command prompt and switch to your temporary restore directory, C:\Restore and run following command. C:\Restore>eseutil /r e00 /i /d Common Eseutil switches Eseutil mode Switch Description Defragments the database offline but leaves the new, defragmented database in the temporary location with or Defragmentation /D without overwriting the original database. This mode reduces the gross size on the disk of the database (.edb) by discarding most empty pages and by rebuilding indexes. Repair /P Repairs a corrupt offline database by discarding any pages that Page 22
Restore /C Recovery /R Integrity /G File Dump /M Checksum /K cannot be fixed. In repair mode, the Eseutil tool fixes individual tables but does not maintain the relationships between tables. Use the Information Store Integrity Checker (Isinteg.exe) tool to check and fix links between tables if the repaired database is a mailbox or public folder database. Displays restore log file (Restore.env file) and controls hard recovery after restoration from legacy online backups. Replays transaction log files or rolls them forward to restore a database to internal consistency or to bring an older copy of a database up to date. Verifies the page level and ESE level logical integrity of the database. Does not verify integrity at the application level. Application-level logical integrity can be verified with Isinteg for mailbox and public folder databases. Displays headers of database files, transaction log files, and checkpoint files. Also displays database page header information, and database space allocation and metadata. Verifies checksums on all pages in the database, log files, and checkpoint files. Copy File /Y Performs a fast copy of very large files. Once the soft recovery is completed, rename the production server s mdbdata folder to mdbdata.old. Create a new folder call mdbdata using the same directory structure, typically C:\Program Files\exchsrvr\mdbdata (this can be a different location depending on where Exchange is installed). Only copy the database files (EDB and STM) to the production server s Exchange database location (C:\Program Files\exchsrvr\mdbdata). Do not copy the logs and other files. Mount the database from ESM (Exchange System Manager). Once the stores are mounted successfully, delete the C:\Restore folder from the NAS and dismount all images. Active Directory Restoration (Database Only) 1. First mount your point-in-time restore volume for your Windows volume. See Mounting a Restore Volume for instructions. In a standard installation the location is C:\Windows\NTDS. 2. Copy the NTDS folder from mounted image to physical server at a temporary folder C:\Temp 3. Dismount the image and logoff the NAS 4. Request the client to reboot the physical server into Active Directory Restore Mode. To do this, reboot the server and press F8 to go into boot options and choose Directory Services Restore Mode Page 23
5. After booting into DSRM, you will be asked for credentials. Do not provide the Domain Administrator s password here. You will require the Directory Services Restore Mode password. This was created when the server was promoted to a DC. Have the client enter the password obtain it from the client. If the client doesn t have the password, this needs to be reset by following the Microsoft KB KB322672 How To Reset the Directory Services Restore Mode Administrator Account Password in Windows Server 2003 6. Once you boot into DSRM, rename the C:\Windows\NTDS folder to C:\Windows\NTDS.OLD 7. Copy the C:\Temp\NTDS folder to C:\Windows. 8. Switch to the directory where the database is located (C:\Windows\NTDS) 9. In a command prompt run the command a. C:\Windows\NTDS>esentutl /r edb /d /8 10. If the soft recovery is unsuccessful or terminates with an error, the Active Directory database needs to be repaired. Proceed with the next step. Page 24
11. To repair the Active Directory database, switch to the active directory database folder (C:\Windows\NTDS) and run following command from a command prompt a. C:\Windows\NTDS>esentutl /p ntds.dit 12. You will be prompted with following warning, click OK to proceed. 13. The repair process will start. 14. Once the repair process is completed, delete or move all the.log files from C:\Windows\NTDS and reboot the server in normal mode. The Directory Services will now start normally. Page 25
