Family Medicine Residency Program

If you wish to be an excellent Clinician and are passionate about making a difference in primary healthcare, we are looking for you. From the Program Director Welcome to the SingHealth Family Medicine Residency Program! Family Medicine is a discipline that provides comprehensive healthcare to people of all ages. Unlike acute hospital medicine, Family Medicine provides you with the opportunity to build long-term relationships with patients. And often their families too. A Family Physician manages the patient in his own environment, taking into account his lifestyle, occupation and significant life factors. Exciting challenges for Family Physicians come from differentiating the trivial from the severe while diagnosing based on few symptoms and signs. Perhaps the most difficult and yet most satisfying is helping patients take ownership and change their behaviour in managing chronic diseases. Dr Ho Chih Wei Sally Program Director Family Medicine As the leading and largest public healthcare cluster in Singapore, SingHealth is an excellent place to begin your journey in Family Medicine. We aim to nurture doctors to be compassionate and excellent family physicians and future leaders in the discipline. Our program is balanced with a good mix of clinical training, didactic lectures, skills workshops and research opportunities. Our Faculty is committed to continuing our strong tradition of nurturing the next generation of Family Physicians and clinician leaders. Our ideal candidate is compassionate, has good interpersonal and communication skills, and is an enthusiastic self-directed learner. We value teamwork and are committed to our patients and our colleagues. Maturity, honesty and humility are other essential characteristics. Come join us at SingHealth Family Medicine Residency. Together, let us provide better, safer and more affordable care for patients who are at the heart of all we do.

Your Family Medicine Residency The SingHealth Residency Family Medicine Program is a three-year program that aims to train compassionate and excellent Family Physicians. Here, you will find abundant training opportunities that will challenge and help you grow in the medical field. JCI-accredited network of primary care polyclinics As the largest public healthcare cluster in Singapore and one of two Academic Healthcare Clusters, our network of nine polyclinics, major hospitals and national specialty centers ensures the depth and breadth of your training. We are proud to have attained the Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation. It affirms our efforts and commitment to improve our care delivery systems, bringing about better care to our patients. Our institutions work together to deliver an increasing range of integrated healthcare services. This makes each patient s healthcare journey hassle-free, assuring and convenient. SingHealth offers unparalleled learning opportunities to be excellent clinicians it is an ideal place to begin your journey in Family Medicine. New primary care master plan The field of Family Medicine is in the midst of an exciting evolution as we work towards achieving the Ministry of Health s (MOH) vision of One Family Physician for every Singaporean. The MOH Primary Care Master Plan has outlined new service models of Family Medicine Centres, Medical Centres, and private GP clinics supported by Community Health Centres. Family Physicians will serve as the backbone of this integrated healthcare system, playing an important role in providing primary access to healthcare in the community. Richness of patient care As a SingHealth Family Medicine Resident, you will take care of undifferentiated patients with varied health needs from prenatal care to end-of-life care. You will work with patients from all walks of life, giving you wide exposure to a diverse clinical case-mix. In addition, there is the opportunity to choose a specialty area of your interest. The Family Medicine Residency Program provides the best training for community Family Medicine practice. It is also a good foundation for those who wish to work in the intermediate and long-term care sectors, as well as those who plan to pursue specialty or subspecialty training in Geriatric, Palliative and Sports Medicine. Renowned Family Medicine mentors Our Faculty members are recognized for their outstanding accomplishments in Family Medicine education and are committed to academic excellence. Many of them are examiners of various postgraduate Family Medicine examinations. A mentor will be assigned to every Resident for the entire Residency training to provide close supervision and guidance in preparation for a career in Family Medicine. Unsurprisingly, SingHealth trainees have consistently achieved pass rates higher than the national average for the MMed Family Medicine exams.

Your Career Prospects & Development Upon completion of the program, Residents will have the opportunity to practise in a variety of settings. The range of possibilities includes polyclinics, Family Medicine Centres, home care, community hospitals and acute hospitals. In the public sector, you can look forward to advance in your career from Family Physician to Associate Consultant, Consultant and eventually Senior Consultant. Those interested in further training are highly encouraged to take up the Fellowship in Family Medicine. Other training opportunities include graduate diplomas in Geriatric Medicine, Dermatology and Mental Health. Specialty training in Geriatric Medicine and subspecialty training in Palliative Medicine and Sports Medicine are other possibilities. A Wealth of Research Opportunities There is a myriad of opportunities for research in SingHealth as Family Medicine develops its Academic Clinical Program (ACP). All Residents will undergo research training and take part in research projects during their training. There will be opportunities to present posters and oral presentations at academic conferences and publish in scientific journals. Those who have completed the Residency program can proceed to advanced research training programs such as the Khoo Scholar program at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. Alternatively, you can pursue the Master in Clinical Investigation program in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at NUS. With the research options available, do take the time to get in touch with us and find out more about our research program.

The Family Medicine Residency Program provides the best training for community Family Medicine practice. Hear from our Residents My time in the Residency program has enabled me to appreciate the importance of Family Medicine that it involves a lot more than merely referring patients onwards to the relevant specialties. I have come to appreciate the importance of the role of primary healthcare. This is in no small part due to the excellent guidance and teaching that we receive during our Residency. Dr Brindha Balakrishnan Family Medicine Resident University of New South Wales Alumnus As the SingHealth Family Residency requires us to make rotations to multiple specialties including Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Orthopaedics, Surgery, Pediatrics and O&G to name a few, we get superb exposure that helps us to train better as family physicians. We return to our continuity clinic one afternoon a week and that allows us to practise what we have learnt and follow up on our patients. It feels wonderful to be able to perform the role of the family physician providing continuing care, building rapport and gaining the trust of the same patient. On top of this, we have a senior supervisor always available for consult in the clinic should we meet with any problems. Dr Poon Zhimin Family Medicine Resident YLL SoM Alumnus
