the warhol: Traveling Exhibitions Happy Warholidays Happy Warholidays is an exhibition inspired by Christmas and seasonal holiday images. This exhibition features Warhol s commercial drawings from the 1950s, Christmas cards, postcards, and other materials from the Warhol Museum archives. The exhibition displays the diverse and eclectic aspect of Warhol s imaginative reach as well as the range of his technical abilities. This selection of charming and whimsical drawings, prints, and objects are from a creatively rich period in Andy Warhol s life, 1949-1959, when he had just left Pittsburgh and was working hard to establish a name for himself as a commercial artist in New York. Happy Warholidays includes Christmas cards that Warhol designed for Tiffany s, graphics for clients, and personal drawings. Christmas provided the perfect opportunity for Warhol to promote his illustration business and indulge his love of gift giving. The subjects of these drawings range from elves and flowers to religious images incorporating the Madonna and Child. In these works, Warhol used decoration, metallic surfaces, bold, bright colors, and stamping to create repetitive images. These materials and techniques suggest connections between Warhol s beginnings as a graphic artist and the Pop Art soup cans and icons of popular culture that came to dominate his legacy.
