CREATE THE FUTURE Graduate studies in computer science at Dalhousie University immerse you in a vibrant learning environment at one of Canada s leading universities. Innovative and interdisciplinary graduate programs; award-winning professors; and a faculty that s actively engaged with industry-related research at Dalhousie University, you ll find the opportunities and motivation to succeed in your masters or doctoral studies. Opt for a masters program with a traditional research-oriented thesis, or a project option that offers more course choices. Choose a multidisciplinary program that focuses on health informatics, electronic commerce, or computational biology and bioinformatics. If you re considering a doctoral degree, our Ph.D. is a research intensive program allowing you to work closely with a faculty supervisor. Our computer science graduate programs include: Master of Computer Science; Master of Applied Computer Science; PhD, Computer Science. Our Interdisciplinary programs include: Master of Electronic Commerce; Master of Health Informatics; Master of Science in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. Students who succeed Dalhousie University has a healthy and vibrant graduate student body of about 3,500 about 22 per cent of our student population. Dalhousie is the 26th largest university in Canada but ranks much higher on measures that really count our graduate student population is the fourth highest proportion in Canada and we re ninth in total peer-reviewed faculty research grants. Dalhousie attracts outstanding graduate students people like Connie Adsett who s researching tools for textto-speech computer programs. She recently received the Andre Hammer Postgraduate Prize as an outstanding candidate in NSERC s masters and doctoral scholarhip program. Our D-Drive Lab houses Canada s first dedicated, large scale, high performance computer cluster for mathematics research. This cluster serves as Dalhousie s node in ACEnet and C3.ca. The D-Drive Lab allow for collaborative and distributed real-time interaction, locally and globally.

Researchers who Innovate The outstanding research initiatives and accomplishments of professors in the Faculty of Computer Science are recognized nationally and internationally. We are home to four prestigious Canada Research Chairs in the areas of Bioinformatics, Privacy and Security, and Algorithms for Memory Hierarchies. Jonathan Borwein, CRC in Distributed and Collaborative Research, is developing new technologies and understanding how people collaborate in advanced research. His work will improve long-distance interactions between researchers, universities and industry. Our faculty members also include a Killam Chair in Computer Science. Evangelos Milios is researching networked information spaces on the web. And the faculty includes one of Canada s best professors Srinivas Sampalli was named a 3M Teaching Fellow in 2005, an exclusive national honor for teaching and leaderhip in Canadian universities. Outstanding facilities The Faculty of Computer Science has a permanent home in a new state-of-the-art, award-winning building. Graduate computing facilities include networks of Unix workstations, Windows PCs, and Macintosh computers, large scale servers and massive data storage facilities. The faculty also has access to high performance computing facilities. Our Network Performance Lab is equipped with network testing software, routers, and switches for developing secure virtual private networks. The Electronic Commerce Lab utilizes award winning e-business software to research new concepts in online commerce and web services, and our health informatics research in semantic web-based approaches to clinical decision support systems is at the cutting-edge of both health informatics and semantic web research. The Faculty of Computer Science building houses a fast, secure, fullyswitched network, in addition to being fully wireless. Gigabit ethernet serves as the backbone of the network with a connection to CA*net3, the world s first national optical R&D network. Our Faculty of Computer Science includes about 35 full-time professors, and 200 masters and doctoral students. You ll learn from, and work with, some of Canada s best professors and researchers. Students in our faculty are active and involved all belong to the Computer Science Student Society, a multi-time winner of best student society on campus award.

YOUR VISION OUR PROGRAMS At Dalhousie s Faculty of Computer Science, you can earn graduate degrees in computer science as well as in leading edge interdisciplinary programs offered collaboratively with other faculties. Ph.D., Computer Science The Ph.D. program in computer science lets students work closely with our world-class faculty researchers on exciting, innovative research to produce a doctoral thesis. All Ph.D. students are funded and, in addition, tuition is waived for those holding NSERC or Killam Scholarship awards. Master of Computer Science (MCS) In the MCS program, masters students work closely with our world-class faculty researchers and produce a research thesis. As of September 2008, tuition is waived for new students holding NSERC or Killam Scholarship awards. Master of Applied Computer Science (MACS) The MACS is a professional masters degree program. Students take additional courses and complete a research project under faculty supervision. This program is open to both students with an undergraduate computer science degree and those with high standing in another discipline. Those entering the program from another discipline may be required to take additional core computer science courses at the undergraduate level. Master of Electronic Commerce (MEC) The MEC is an interdisciplinary degree program offered jointly by the Dalhousie faculties of Computer Science, Law and Management. Electronic Commerce is a discipline with roots equally in technology, business, and social and economic policy. This unique academic degree blends course work, research and an internship to deliver a commanding overview of the field. Master of Health Informatics (MHI) The MHI program has health as its focus and information technology as the enabler. Health informatics deals with understanding the meaning and use of health information to support clinical care, health services administration, research and teaching. The program deals with the management and use of health information. The program is offered jointly by the faculties of Computer Science and Medicine and students have the option of either a research thesis or an internship. M.Sc. in Computational Biology & Bioinformatics The M.Sc. program in Computational Biology & Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary masters degree. It emphasizes thesis work that tackles problems in biology, molecular biology and health-related fields through significant research contributions in mathematics, statistics and computer science. Resources from the faculties of Computer Science, Medicine and Science are coordinated to offer a flexible program, with a limited course load and an emphasis on research activities. Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Dalhousie s Interdisciplinary Ph.D. is designed to meet the needs of an increasing number of mature, experienced students for whom research opportunities may cut across disciplinary boundaries. In some cases, the research incorporates the insights of two or three traditional disciplines; in others, the research itself is in an interdisciplinary field. Each program is customized to meet the student s needs. Students take graduate classes across the university and work with faculty members in existing PhD disciplines and in other areas. For information on the Interdisciplinary PhD., see: www.dalgrad.dal.ca/interdisciplinary

A COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY An engaged campus Graduate students are a vital part of the extensive research conducted in our faculty.
