Glossary of Technical Terms Cardiac region of the thorax: the area of the chest over the heart Diode assembly: a printed circuit board assembly that contains a series of laser diodes and light emitting dioes (LED s). Direct Exposure: allowing access of a specific area of the body directly to something. If a warning statement states to avoid direct exposure to a certain area of the body, it means to not allow that section of the body to access to the item that the warning statement is referencing. Hemorrhage: Bleeding Infra-red: light wavelengths below the visible spectrum. SEE visible spectrum below. Laser Diode: a semiconductor device that produces coherent radiation (in which the waves are all at the same frequency and phase) in the visible or infra-red (IR) spectrum when electrical current passes through it. Launch: section of a program that allows the user to select the treatment LED: light emitting diode a semiconductor device that emits light when an electrical current passes through it. mw: milliwatts, which is the unit of measure used for measuring electrical power. nm: nanometers, which is the unit of measures used for measuring light wavelengths. Non-invasive: does not involve physical penetration of the skin, i.e., does not break the skin. Operational Firmware: computer program that is set in the hardware and is used to operate the device. Penetration Depth: the distance that the light or heat energy reaches into the targeted tissue. See Targeted Tissue below. Star Button: the ON/OFF button it turns the device on or off. Suspicious Lesions: lesions that are: 1. One half of a mole looks different from the other. 2. The edge (border) of the mole is ragged, notched or blurred. 3. The mole has a variety of hues and colors within the same lesion, 4. Greater than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser) in diameter Targeted Tissue: Portions of the body (muscles, joints, etc.) that the light and heat energy is meant to affect. Thyroid region of the neck: area of the neck just on either side of the Adams Apple. Touchpad Membrane Key Panel: the keypad on the face of the laser, for selection commands to active certain functions. Visible Spectrum: light that can be seen with the human eye. Fault Possible Cause Fault Removal Battery doesn t charge Unit heats up, Screen goes Blank Troubleshooting Cord not properly plugged into unit. Cleaning & Care Troubleshooting With proper care and maintenance, it s expected that your device could last 10 years or more. To properly care for the Scalar Laser Base Unit, never put Scalar Laser, the 405, 650 or 780 Pulsar Probe, the cables or the power adapter directly into liquid or water, as this could damage the internal components. In addition, do not expose the Scalar Wave Laser Base to prolonged sunlight of very wet environments, such as rain. To clean the Scalar Wave Laser Base, use a tissue and dampen with rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. You can also use a little mild soap and wipe off soap with a clean moist cloth. Do not submerge any of the components in water or other liquids. Maintenance & Warranty The Scalar Wave Laser Base should be maintained and serviced only by the manufacturer. Always keep the Scalar Wave Laser System in the case/enclosure when not in use, to avoid damage to the device. The Scalar Wave Laser Unit should only be opened or serviced by the manufacturer and if otherwise opened the warranty will immediately be voided. Again, please do not open any of the components of the Scalar Wave Laser Base or Probes, otherwise warranty will be voided. The Scalar Wave Laser Unit comes with a warranty period of 1 year from purchase date. When used and maintained properly by instructions in this Users Guide. Damages to misuse are not covered by this warranty. Your Scalar Wave Laser Base is warrantied for a period of 1 year under normal use after it s original purchase date. Operating Instructions Scalar Wave Laser Base + Pulsar Probes 1. Test this device on your skin in an area that is not as exposed as your face before using it on your face. Because of drugs you take or have taken and other materials you are or have been exposed to, you may be sensitive to the intense light of this device. Using this device may cause a severe reaction. Common examples of drugs that may have made you sensitive to light are: antihistamines, used in cold and allergy medicines; nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), used in to control pain and inflammation in arthritis; and antibiotics, including the tetracyclines and the sulfonamides, or sulfa drugs. Common examples of nondrugs that may have made you sensitive to light are: deodorants, antibacterial soaps, artificial sweetners, fluorescent brightening agents for cellulose, nylon and wool fibers such as laundry detergent, naphthalene (mothballs), petroleum products, and in cadmium sulfide, a chemical injected into the skin during tattooing. 2. To begin, use the Scalar Laser (to cover a wider area) or attach the probe wire connector to the bottom of the 405, 650 or 780 Pulsar Probe and also to the middle outlet on the underside of the Scalar Laser (to cover a more concentrated area). Note: In order for any of the Pulsar Probes to function, it must be connected to the Scalar Laser. 3. Where possible, apply treatment to bare skin. Whenever possible, remove clothing or keep it to a minimum, as this can reduce the ability of the laser to penetrate, as well as alter the distance between the emitter and the area being treated, which will also change the penetration depth. 5. Press the Right Arrow button to start the treatment. The LED s and laser diodes will illuminate. 6. Note: Pointing the device directly st your eyes or someone else s eyes could cause damage to eyesight. Carefully hold the device at an angle that is not directly pointing the light at you or antone else and verify that all of the LED s and laser diodes are illuminated. If all of the LED s and laser diodes are not illuminated, the device must be returned for service. 7. Place the Scalar Laser or the 405, 650 or 780 Pulsar Probe that is plugged into the Scalar Laser directly over the area of pain, approximately 1/2 inch above the skin surface, for 3 minutes while the device warms the skin surface of the area to be treated to the sufficient temperature for treatment. Continue to hold the Scalar Laser or the 405, 650 or 780 Pulsar Probe in place for 10 additional minutes in order to receive the full treatment. The emitter should be held in the place where the pain or discomfort is being felt. Note: It is important to keep applying the heat treatment for the full ten minutes after the 3 minutes it takes to warm the skin to the sufficient temperature because it has been determined through clinical experience with similar devices that it takes the full 10 minutes to properly treat pain. 4. Turn the Scalar Laser on by pressing the Star button. The device will turn on and will display LAUNCH. 8. To turn the device off, press the STAR button. 9. Repeat this treatment as needed for pain. 10 11
