Flight Attendant Job Description Flight attendants, when interacting with passengers, represent the airline, and are therefore responsible for the impression they make on customers. There are flights each day of the year, including holidays. Flight attendants are expected to be flexible and available on short notice, especially during the holidays, when commercial airlines are extremely busy. The job of a flight attendant is physically demanding, requiring a higher level of health and stamina, and the ability to endure long on duty hours. Along with long work hours, there can also be weather delays, flight cancellations, re-routing and extended trips. Flight attendants are expected to remain calm, especially under unexpected circumstances, to keep passengers content and comfortable, as they continue onto their destinations. One of the most popular benefits to working as an airline employee is the perk of flight benefits for the flight attendant, and for their spouse, children, and parents. There are also partner hotels and cruise companies that offer discounted travel to airline employees. Many airlines offer medical, dental, eye care and prescription insurance coverage, along with life insurance and retirement plans to their employees. Employee benefits will vary by airline. Typical Duties of a Flight Attendant Greet passengers as they board the flight and assist passengers with assigned seating or baggage Help to maintain an on-time departure, by ensuring all passengers have boarded the flight Check to make sure seatbelts are fastened and baggage is stored properly Instruct passengers about safety procedures and the use emergency equipment. Address passengers concerns with flight connections, seat assignments Distributing refreshments, headsets and blankets to passengers for their comfort and enjoyment. Conducting the inflight meal and beverage services. A flight attendant s main responsibility is to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers on each flight. Remember, a satisfied customer is most likely to fly with your airline again!

Do You Have What it Takes? Now that you have a better understanding of the responsibilities of a flight attendant, take the time to think about what skills and experience you have that will help you in your future career. Along with important skills and technical knowledge, you will be required to possess a few key traits to be successful in this career. Flight attendants must be reliable and flexible with changing schedules and living away from home and family, often in a new city for long periods of time. Good flight attendants are patient and able to show empathy, especially when dealing with passengers on a flight. Communication and problem solving skills are also very important for flight attendants to be able to act as an authority during a flight, or when attempting to resolve any issues that arise with passengers (eg. medical emergency, seating and connection problems, a child travelling alone, or a disgruntled passenger). Since flight attendants are responsible for the entire cabin service, they need to possess strong organizational skills that will come handy when boarding passengers, checking inventory of supplies including food and beverages, ensuring safety of the cabin, as well as the proper exit of passengers. I am ready, willing and able to serve customers with a smile YES NO I am prepared to represent my airline with pride YES NO I do not mind working shifts and long hours YES NO I agree with the requirement of being professionally groomed YES NO I look forward to learning and improving myself all the time YES NO Take a few moments to reflect on the statements above.
