READY STEADY STUDY! Study skills Do you have problems with your school results? Would you like to improve your performance when you have to study? Learning how to study can make the process much easier and more productive for you. Planning First of all, make a plan considering what you are expected to take in. You could draw up a list of all the subjects you have to study every week, leaving space in between. Next to each subject write a list of specific tasks to be done and add the day when you will look at them. Take a calendar or your school diary and plan how many hours a day will be taken up by school work. Fit some study breaks into your schedule, allowing for a phone call or a light snack. Ideal setting Remember that your brain can t work at the same level of concentration all day long. When do you feel the readiest to store information according to your biorhythms? Devote the hours when you are most receptive to the most demanding tasks and leave lighter tasks such as oral revision, to the moments when you feel your mind is less alert. Once your plan has been drawn up, think of the best background to study: is it your bedroom or the kitchen or any other room? Would you rather choose the local library to get rid of noisy little siblings? Do you prefer lying on your bed, on the floor or, what is really worth considering, sitting at a table? Remember to get everything ready at the beginning of your studying time: pens, pencils, dictionaries, a calculator, a rubber, an atlas and so on should be within easy reach. Listening to soft, instrumental or classical music may help you to concentrate but always switch the TV off before getting down to work. School time Finally, make your stay at school as effective as possible: don t be idle, listen carefully to your teachers explanations, don t be ashamed of asking questions if you don t have a good understanding of something, take detailed notes. In a few words, try to understand what you are expected to memorize, as to know also means to understand. 1
