Educational Requirements for an Engineering Technician Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND), Foundation Degrees, National Certificate and National Diploma Courses The courses listed have been approved against standards set by the Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation and the Institute of Highway Engineers and endorsed by the Engineering Council. Please note that from Autumn 2004 institutions were no longer required by the Engineering Council to accredit individual college HNC/D programmes. The JBM institutions have approved the HNC/D programmes awarded by Pearson (BTEC), formerly Edexcel, and SQA and for this reason the formal accreditation periods are being allowed to lapse and may not have been extended after this date but the courses continue to be recognised. From 2011, Foundation Degrees in Civil Engineering have been accredited by the member institutions of the JBM. All the courses listed below will meet the educational requirements for an Engineering Technician. A Higher National from the IEng listing will meet the educational requirements for an Engineering Technician. The HND and Foundation Degree courses below in Civil Engineering would need to be topped up with a period of Further Learning after graduation, in order to meet the academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer status (although some courses before 1999 may fully meet the academic requirements for IEng). Holders of HNC would require a longer period of Further Learning. This further learning can be achieved in a combination of ways full or parttime in HE, distance learning or work-based learning. Graduates from the HNC/D or Foundation Degree courses below in Construction, Construction Management, Sustainable Construction etc will be required to apply to one of the JBM member institutions for an academic assessment of their qualifications in order that they can be advised of the additional study that will be required to meet the academic base for IEng registration. These graduates will meet the educational requirements for an Engineering Technician.
