ii Faculty of Education 2016/17 Message from the Dean The Faculty of Education on the Groenkloof Campus attracts the best and brightest students who have the potential to exert a significant impact on the South African educational landscape. Our students are leaders who are full of confidence and are equipped with a superb set of educational and professional skills. Their set of skills is, however, not their most important attribute as graduates of the Faculty of Education. Their inclination towards critical scholarship, their subject expertise, their fully engaged citizenship and high scientific literacy are the attributes that will enable them to make a difference in education. The Groenkloof Campus is home to more than 3 500 undergraduate education students and, from this group, approximately 500 to 800 of our students graduate to enter the teaching profession annually. It is clear that education is a high priority in a country in which some studies have shown that only 7% of matriculants enter public higher education, 12% enter other forms of further and higher education, % acquire a job and a total of 51% of the youth are unemployed. Education is clearly a priority. The Faculty of Education is ranked in the top 200 in the World on the QS World University rankings; it is rated as the top educational faculty in South Africa in terms of the number of NRF-rated researchers; the Faculty is internationally recognised for its academic reputation, employer reputation and citations of research. Networks exist with both local and international universities including universities in the USA, China, Australia, Canada and Europe. The Faculty of Education takes its responsibility to deliver top-quality graduates for the education sector seriously. We live in a time in which the age-old principles of effective education have become even more crucial to progress and development and our graduates play an essential role in this respect. To achieve this, teaching is by far the most meaningful way to occupy our time and it is the shortest route to long-term success for any nation, community, family or individual. As a professional field of study, it is one of those treasured sectors in which one can have a true sense of being able to influence the future on a daily basis. In addition, the field of education has the ability to span all scientific fields of study known in the world. This is the one sector that will make an impression on the lives of future doctors, engineers, accountants, lawyers, teachers, philosophers, artists, musicians, sport heroes, presidents and royalty. This means that we have to seek excellence in everything we do. Prof Irma Eloff Dean: Faculty of Education We believe that, as a Faculty, we have much to offer in order to strengthen education in this country, to facilitate access to education for students and to deliver inspirational, caring and expert teachers. University of Pretoria 2 Catherine Reynders comes from a very supportive family. She matriculated in 2012 with seven distinctions and in her first year at UP she passed with 13 distinctions. She is currently in her second year and is a Skanduka bursary holder. Catherine recently won the Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust Top Achiever Award. She has both Mathematics and Business as electives and has not decided whether she will focus on Mathematics or Educational Psychology in her third year. I have never regretted my decision to study teaching and I will do whatever it takes to become a Grade 12 Mathematics teacher. I also want to further my knowledge in the field of Educational Psychology. I am an observer and a problem solver, and I would love to dedicate myself to the upliftment of education in South Africa, a domain which I feel is overlooked and undervalued. Catherine has been dancing since the age of three and completed advanced examinations in modern dancing and ballet. She still participates in open ballet and contemporary classes. Through the NB Dance Company Catherine became a Blue Bulls babe and cheerleader, participating in various corporate events arranged by the Bulls and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of rugby.

3 Faculty of Education 2016/17 Undergraduate programmes As a child, Karen Schneider struggled with dyslexia and had to work very hard to pass. With the support of her parents and teachers she overcame the problem and completed Grade 12 and Abitur (German Grade 12) at the Deutsche Schule Pretoria. Teachers and therapists told her parents she would never be able to undertake tertiary studies, but Karen not only proved them wrong, she flourished academically and received several academic awards: In 2009, Karen won the award for Best Art Education student a two-month stay in Paris sponsored by the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA). In 2010 she received the Vice-Chancellor and Principal s Award the highest award any final-year student can receive and she was awarded membership of the Golden Key International Honour Society. The most recent award she received was the Anton Rupert Scholarship to the value of R40 000. Karen completed her BEd Honours (Educational Psychology) with distinction in 2012 and in 2013 enrolled for an MEd (Educational Psychology), which includes classes, assignments, practical work, an internship (at the Deutsche Schule Pretoria), research and a mini-dissertation. The title of her dissertation is Determining how a grandparentheaded family expresses family resilience. Having goals is extremely important. I always set new goals and challenges for myself. I am keen on lecturing and presenting workshops, because teaching and sharing knowledge are an important part of my identity. One day I would like to open my own practice and work with children using expressive arts therapy. With a German dad and a British mom, I am proudly South African. My parents are my biggest inspiration, but I also acknowledge the role my boyfriend, Pieter, and my friends have played in my success. Two other persons I want to mention are Mr Peter Binsbergen and Ms Annelise Roos, who believed in me and taught me that passion and hard work go together. I have great respect for my postgraduate lecturers in the Department of Educational Psychology. Their support and commitment to outstanding supervision make them unique.
