Airplane Buying Cheat Sheet Disclaimer: Make sure you always get professional legal advice & used licenced technicians when you are doing your inspections. This information is used at your own risk... How To Get A Discount On Your Next Airplane: The bottom line is that you are probably not interested in paying full price (or the asking price) for your next airplane! Your going to want to make sure you can get a discount & probably a good discount. The problem most people have is they simply don't know what they are doing and they end up overpaying for the plane that they are buying. So to fix this, I want to show you a few techniques that you can use... Technique #1 DON'T Buy Local... This is one of the biggest mistakes people make when they are trying to get a discount on the airplane they are looking at buying. They will often think that it is going to be a pain in the butt to go and get an airplane that is outside the local area. So as a result, they will simply overpay for the airplane that they are looking at getting simply because of the fact that it is down the road or at the local airport.
VERY IMPORTANT: There is no rule saying you can't get the seller of the airplane you are looking at to include the delivery of the airplane to your local airport. If the seller wants to sell it bad enough, you should be able to negotiate that condition into the purchase agreement when you buy it. If you can get the seller to deliver the airplane to you, then your only costs are a flight out to see the airplane before you buy it. So make sure you don't just buy what is around your local area because it is convenient and you think it might be cheaper. Technique #2 Go Outside Of The Traditional Places For Finding Airplanes... One of the biggest mistakes people make when they try and find an airplane is they only focus on the popular portals and sites online. You have to realize that you can get some deals there, but sometimes your best deals are going to be found on sites and in papers that have nothing to do with aviation. More and more, people are trying to sell their airplanes on classified sites online or through local newspaper classifieds. The reason for this is because for a lot of people that is all they know & feel comfortable with... Some people have no clue how to upload pictures, scan things and setup listings on aviation sites. That is why you always want to be looking in the classified sections of the larger papers in your area & make sure you are looking through online classified sites like Craigslist, exc... You have no clue what you might find if you spend some time looking.
INSIDER TIP: What to find a real gem? Search through the agriculture newspaper classifieds or the corresponding websites. You would not believe how many farmers try and sell the airplanes they don't use on those sites. Technique #3 Wait For A Distress Sale... This is a great way to get a super deal on an airplane... The first thing you are going to want to do is make sure you have your financing or cash lined up. Once you are approved for a loan or have your cash lined up and ready to go, the next thing you need to do is hurry up and wait! (-: You want to look through all the places that you should be looking for an airplane and find ones that look desperate. They are pretty easy to find as they are usually written by people who are saying things like, quick sale, getting a divorce, must sell, etc... It is very similar to people who have to dump their houses because of a financial crunch. BE VERY CAREFUL: You are going to want to make sure you make them a very clean offer that you think is right for you! Don't make them mad and give them 50% of what the asking price is... But give them a reasonable low-ball offer and make sure it is clean. That means you are going to want to make sure you can close FAST. Pretty much, pending an inspection & the legal work your ready to buy the thing. If they can see that, you are going to have a very motivated seller on your hands.
Technique #4 Make Backup Offers On Planes That Have Been Sitting... This is a great strategy if you have patience... What you do is, watch the market and see what is moving and what is not moving. Then once you find some airplanes that you like that are not moving, figure out what you think the price should be for you to get a discount. The next thing you can do is call up the seller and make them a backup offer for that amount. You can simply tell them that you know they are not looking to sell it for that amount, but if all else fails, you'll take it off their hands for that price. DON'T RUSH THIS... Your not going to get it on the first call, but doing this will likely wear them down and they will be thinking about that price & your offer all the time. Then after a few months of no movement, there is a good chance that you might get a call back and be able to get the airplane for close to the price you were willing to pay.
How To Avoid Potentially EXPENSIVE Problems When You Buy An Airplane... There are a lot of things that you need to watch out for when you are buying an airplane, but one of the biggest mistakes you can make is using the sellers mechanic to do your pre-purchase inspection work. You have to realize that they might be a very good mechanic and do a very good job, but the bottom line is that they are not independent. They work for the owner of the airplane! Now of course they are not likely going to do something stupid or they would lose their license... But there will likely be other mechanics around, so use one of them. WARRNING: They could have very well been working on that airplane for years & might have missed something that could someday turn into a big problem. Sometimes when you get very familiar with things you can easily overlook small things. It happens all the time in all kinds of areas. Now I am not saying the mechanic is going to lie to you, they are probably very good at what they do... But what I am saying is to make sure you simply find an independent person to do the work for you so you can get a fresh set of expert eyes to go over it and tell you what is wrong.
What You Can Do To Save THOUSANDS Of Dollars A Year... No one wants to spend more money then they need to when it comes to ownership costs of the airplane that you are buying. So what you need to do is make sure you do a few things right before you buy the airplane. You need to make sure you don't overbuy an airplane. What I mean by that is, the chances are really good that you are going to want to get an airplane that you can grow into. That is fine, but you have to make sure you count the costs of doing that. If you are a low time pilot, you are going to likely pay a massive premium for your insurance when it comes to things like: Variable pitch props.. Retractable gear.. Turbochargers.. Six seats.. Six cylinders.. Now, who doesn't want those things? But what you have to realize is that when you get an airplane with those things in them you are increasing your risk when it comes to insurance. Now, you might get lucky and not
have to pay an extra premium for those things, but the chances are really good that you will. Not only that every one of the above things that I mentioned will also cost you one thing... MONEY!! You have to spend money every year in most cases to service those features... DON'T MISUNDERSTAND THIS: I am not saying you should get a stripped down 2 seater... But make sure you count the costs of the additional do-dads and find out exactly how much extra each year it is going to cost you in ownership costs & insurance increases. Remember that you can always sell your current airplane and upsize to a bigger one after you have more hours... How To Get An Airplane WITHOUT Having A Pilot's License... (My true story) Fourteen years ago when I got my pilots license, my father wanted one as well. For quite some time I had my private license and my father did not. But he did own an airplane that I flew for him... He trained on that airplane & eventually got his private license while flying it as well. Not only that, he had the luxury of having me to fly his butt all over the countryside! But the important thing you need to realize is that there are options out there.
DON'T FORGET THIS: There are lots of younger commercial pilots who need to build up hours and will fly your airplane for you for free! (Just keep them fed!) So just get one that you like and have him or her become your main pilot. Just make sure they can fly the airplane and they can be insured on your airplane. Also make sure you talk to your insurance company about this & your lawyer BEFORE you buy the airplane. You want to make sue you do it right before you get yourself into problems. But if you can make it work, it is a great strategy as you will be able to fly in YOUR airplane and potentially get a pilot to work for you for free. (It's a win/win deal as they need the hours).
