This is the Writing Test tutorial. The following instructions will show you how to complete the free sample test. Mode Screen You can sit this free sample test in either Test Mode or Learner Mode. To sit the test under exam conditions, click YES against the Test Mode option. YES To sit the test in Learner Mode, click NO against the Test Mode option. NO
Within the Learner Mode there are several options: HELP: This option allows you to ask for help to answer the questions during the test. DICTIONARY: This option allows you to look up any words in the test. CHECK ANSWERS: This option allows you to see sample answers during the test. CLOCK: This option allows you to see a clock that will count down the test time. If you do not want all of these options you can select which ones you want by clicking the YES and NO buttons on the screen. Once you are ready to take the free sample test, click START TEST to begin. START TEST
Writing Part 1 and 2 The instructions for each part of the test are in the box at the top of the screen. You type your answer in the space on the right of the screen. Instructions Answer You can answer the parts in any order. Use the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen, or click on the NEXT button to move between Part 1 and Part 2. In Writing Part 2 there is a choice of questions. Answer one of the questions 2 to 6. Click on the button next to each question number to read each of the questions in Part 2. Questions When you have decided which question to answer, click on the button next to that question and type your answer in the space on the right of the screen. If you reach the end of the answer space, a scroll bar will appear to allow you to continue typing. You can see how many words you have written at the bottom of the box. Choose your question Scroll bar Word count You can review and change your answers at any time until the end of the test. Before you finish the test, make sure you have clicked on the question you have answered.
Learner Mode Functions If you want to compare your answer to a sample answer during the test, click on the CHECK ANSWERS button. CHECK ANSWERS In the full test this will show you 2 sample answers for each question. Click the TEST button to return to the test. TEST
If you want to look up a word, click on the DICTIONARY button. DICTIONARY Type your word in the box in the dictionary screen and click on LOOK IT UP. To close the dictionary, click on the cross in the corner. To close the dictionary LOOK IT UP
If you want help answering any of the questions in the test, click on the HELP button. HELP You can use the cursor to move the help screen if you want to. Click on the CLOSE button to return to the test. CLOSE
You have 80 minutes to complete the Free Sample FCE Writing test. There is a clock at the top of the screen which tells you how much time you have left. This clock will flash when you have 10 minutes and 5 minutes left. CLOCK The test will tell you when 80 minutes has passed. If you want to end the test yourself, click on the END button. When you have answered the Part 1 question and one question from Part 2, the SUBMIT ANSWERS button will appear in the bottom corner of the screen. The scores screen will then appear. The writing test is not scored but sample answers are provided. In the full test, the PRINT SCORES button will allow you to print scores for Reading, Use of English and Listening. In the full test, if you want to compare your answer with the sample answers you can click on the ANSWER FEEDBACK button at the bottom of the screen.
