Art Appreciation Lecture Series 2014 Realism to Surrealism: European art and culture 1848-1936 Manet (1832 1883) Painter of Modern Life Christopher Allen 26/27 March 2014 Lecture summary: Manet is not only one of the greatest artists of the nineteenth century, but one of the most sophisticated painters of the modern experience, ostensibly concerned with the representation of middle-class life in Paris during the Second Empire and the Third Republic, but in reality defining a sensibility that recalls Baudelaire and anticipates Proust. He employs a complex play of arthistorical allusions and echoes to renew our perception of the familiar world, and he concentrates in particular on the look in his subjects eyes whether seemingly directed at other figures in the composition, disconcertingly addressing us as viewers of the picture, or perhaps most often turned back inwards, alone and absent.
