(120-0732) Features Faxback Doc. # 19744 The Radio Shack AM/FM Stereo Portable Radio is a mini-stereo system that is perfect for your active lifestyle. The easy to use controls make it simple to select AM or FM stereo, adjust the sound level, and balance the sound from the two built-in-speakers. Other features include: Portable Design and carrying - make it easy to carry so you can listen to Strap your favorite music anywhere you go. Stereo Headphone Jack - lets you connect headphones (not supplied) to the radio for private listening. FM Stereo Indicator - lights steadily when the radio receives an FM broadcast signal in stereo. Built-In AM Antenna and FM - provide excellent reception. Telescoping Antenna Three POWER Sources - let you power the radio from internal batteries, an AC outlet (using an optional adapter), or your vehicle's cigarettelighter socket (using an optional adapter).

(120-0732) Operation Faxback Doc. # 19745 CONNECTING POWER You can power the radio from any of these power sources: Internal battery power Standard AC power (using an optional AC adapter) Vehicle battery power (using an optional DC adapter) Using Internal Battery Power You can power your radio from four AA batteries (not supplied). For the best performance, we recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-557. Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Remove the battery compartment cover by pressing down on its top center and sliding it in the direction of the arrows. 2. Remove the old batteries (if any are installed) by pulling up on the ribbon. CAUTIONS: Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. If you do not plan to use the radio for a month or more, remove the batteries. Never leave dead, old, or weak batteries in the radio. Batteries can leak chemicals and corrode and damage electronic circuits. 3. Insert the batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked on the radio's back panel. CAUTIONS: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Never mix fresh and old batteries, or different battery types, such as standard and alkaline batteries. NOTE: To make it easier to replace the batteries later, place them over the ribbon. 4. Replace the battery compartment cover.

NOTE: If the sound weakens or distorts, replace the batteries. Using Standard AC Power You can power the radio from standard AC power using an optional AC adapter, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 273-1454. CAUTIONS: The recommended AC adapter supplies 6 volts and delivers at least 150 milliamps. Its center tip is set to negative, and its plug correctly fits the radio's DC 6V jack. Using an AC adapter that does not meet these specifications might damage the radio or the adapter. Always plug the AC adapter into the radio before you plug it into the AC outlet, and always unplug it from the AC outlet before you unplug it from the radio. Insert the barrel plug into the radio's DC 6V jack. Then plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. NOTE: Connecting an AC adapter automatically disconnects internal battery power. Using Vehicle Battery Power You can power the radio from a vehicle's battery using an optional DC adapter, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 270-1560. CAUTIONS: Your vehicle must have a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. The recommended DC adapter supplies 6 volts and delivers at least 150 milliamps. Its center tip is set to negative, and its plug correctly fits the radio's DC 6V jack. Using a DC adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the radio or the adapter. Always plug the DC adapter into the radio before you plug it into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket, and always unplug it from the cigarette-lighter before you unplug it from the radio. Follow these steps to power the radio from a vehicle's battery. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 6V.

2. Insert the blue-tipped barrel plug's twin connectors into the adapter cord's smaller end so it reads TIP-NEG. 3. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the radio's DC 6V jack. NOTE: Connecting a DC adapter automatically disconnects internal battery power. 4. Plug the adapter into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. PLAYING THE RADIO WARNING: To protect your hearing, set the volume controls to their lowest settings before you turn on the radio. 1. Set POWER ON..OFF to ON. 2. Set FM STEREO/FM/AM to the desired band. NOTE: For stereo sound on FM stations, set it to FM STEREO. 3. Rotate TUNING DOWN/UP to the desired radio station. 4. Adjust VOLUME MAX/MIN to a comfortable listening level. 5. Adjust LEFT/RIGHT BALANCE CONTROL as desired for equal balance between the left and right speakers. 6. To turn off the radio, set POWER ON..OFF to OFF. NOTES: For the best FM reception, fully extend the telescoping antenna. The AM antenna is built-in. Move the radio to improve AM reception. When you tune to an FM stereo station with the band switch set to FM STEREO, the FM stereo indicator steadily lights. To improve reception for weak FM stereo stations, set FM STEREO/FM/ AM to FM. The sound is monaural, but the reception improves. CONNECTING HEADPHONES To listen to the radio in privacy, you can connect a pair of stereo headphones. Your local Radio Shack store sells a wide selection of stereo

headphones. Insert the headphones' 1/8-inch plug into the radio's HEADPHONE JACK. NOTE: Connecting headphones into HEADPHONE automatically disconnects the built-in speakers. Listening Safely Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can cause a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard.

(120-0732) Care and Maintenance Faxback Doc. # 19746 To enjoy your Radio Shack AM/FM Stereo Portable Radio for a long time: Keep the radio dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Use and store the radio only in normal temperature environments. Keep the radio away from dust and dirt. Handle the radio gently and carefully. Do not take apart your radio. If the radio is not performing as it should, take it to your local Radio Shack store for assistance.
