M ISSION ARLINGTON MISSION METROPLEX LESSON 17 Old Testament The Red Sea Exodus 13-14 Memory Verse: [God] did wonders and miraculous signs in Egypt [and] at the Red Sea. (Acts 7:36 NIrV) Lesson Goals: 1.Understand that God wants to protect us. 2. Learn that God makes His presence known. 3. Understand that God performed miracles to save Israel. 4. Recognize that God parted the Red Sea and Israel crossed on dry land. Last week we learned how Aaron and Moses went before Pharaoh. They told him what God said, but God hardened Pharaoh s heart. Pharaoh refused to let the people go. But God delivered Israel from slavery with mighty miracles. Read the Bible READ: Exodus 14:1-14 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) Begin With Prayer When God led the people out of Egypt, He didn t lead them on the simplest road. He took them through the desert to a big sea called the Red Sea. (Exodus 13:17) God led them by day with a big cloud and He led them by night with a pillar of fire. The cloud helped shade the people from the heat of the desert during the day. The fire helped warm the people from the cold at night. God protected and took care of His people. (Exodus 13:21-22) When the Pharaoh realized what had happened, he had all his men and chariots chase after the people. He was confident that he would get them back, BUT he was wrong. (Exodus 14:1-9) When the people looked up and saw the chariots, they were scared. Moses talked to them and told them that God would protect them, help them, and take care of them. All of a sudden they reached a dead end. The Red Sea was right before them. The people began to panic because there was no way of escape from Pharaoh s army. (Exodus 14:10-12) Moses answered the people. He said, "Don't be afraid. Stand firm. You will see how the Lord will save you today. Do you see those Egyptians? You will never see them again. The Lord will fight for you. Just be still." (Exodus 14:13-14) God said, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people of Israel to move on. (Exodus 14:15) He told Moses to lift his staff. Then God said something really strange. Reach your hand out over the Red Sea to part the water. Then the people can go through the sea on dry ground. (Exodus 14:16) Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 17 Page 2

The Red Sea Bible Facts 1. God lead Israel with a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire. 2. Pharaoh went after the Israelites, 3. God parted the Red Sea. 4. Israel trusted in the Lord. God told Moses that He would gain glory because of what would happen to Pharaoh and his army. God said the Egyptians would know that He is the Lord. (Exodus 14:17-18) The angel of God moved behind the people and protected them from the Pharaoh s army. In fact, while it was night on the Pharaoh s side, God made it light for his people all night long. (Exodus 14:19-20) Moses reached his hand out over the Red Sea. All night a great wind blew. It separated the water into two walls. In the middle was a dry walkway. All of God s people walked through the water on dry land! (Exodus 14:21-22) The Israelites made it safely to the other side as the chariots began to ride through the walkway. As they were riding, God made their chariot wheels difficult to turn. The men knew that God was taking care of His people. They ran back to the land shouting, Let s get out of here. God is fighting for them! (Exodus 14:23-25) God told Moses to stretch out his hand over the waters. Suddenly the waters closed. All of the Pharaoh s army was killed in the water. Not one Egyptian was left. (Exodus 14:26-28) Israel saw God rescue them from Egypt s power. They saw God s power demonstrated against Egypt. So they had respect for the Lord. They put their trust in Him and in His servant Moses. (Exodus 14:29-31) Review 1. How did God lead Israel? (pillar ( of cloud by day; pillar of fire by night) 2. What did Pharaoh do? (changed his mind and went after the Israelites) 3. What did God do? (protected Israel; parted the Red Sea) 4. What Israel do? (put their trust in the Lord) Do you know Jesus? God saved the people from Pharaoh. He delivered them from slavery. We are slaves to sin. God wants to deliver us from the slavery of sin. God wants us to live with Him forever. He knew a way for this to happen. He sent His only Son, Jesus, to take your punishment. He died for all the wrong sins that we have done. (John 3:16) We have a choice to follow Him and believe in Him with all our hearts. If we trust Him, He will clean out our sin and make us like a new person. (Romans 10:9-10; II Corinthians 5:17) Would you like to know how you can trust in Jesus? Talk to your teacher. Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus to take our punishment. 3. Ask God to help you trust Him to protect you. 4. Pray for friends and family members who need to trust God to protect them. Application God heard the cry of Israel and delivered them from slavery. He protected Israel from their enemy. God wants to protect us. Just as He made His presence known to Israel, God makes His presence known to us. God performed miracles to save Israel. God parted the Red Sea and Israel crossed on dry land. He sent His Son to save us. Planning for the next week: The Ten Commandments Exodus 20 Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 17 Page 3

Preschool Lesson Read the Bible READ: Exodus 14:1-14 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) Teachers: Cut out figures of Egyptians. Write the memory verse on a blue sheet of paper. Use tape to put the fallen Egyptians in the Red Sea. Talk about the miracles and wonders that God did. When God led the people out of Egypt, He didn t lead them on the easiest road. He took them through the hot desert to a big sea called the Red Sea. God led them with a big cloud by day and He led them with a pillar of fire by night. The cloud helped shade the people from the heat of the desert during the day. The fire helped warm the people from the cold at night. God took care of His people. When the king saw what had happened, he had all his men and chariots chase after the people. He was sure that he would force the people to come back, BUT he was wrong. When the people looked up and saw the chariots, they were scared. Moses talked to them and told them that God would help them and care for them. All of a sudden they reached a dead end. The Red Sea was right before them. The people began to panic because there was no way of escape from the king s army. (Hand out blue construction paper.) Suddenly, God told Moses to lift his staff. A great wind began to blow. It separated the water into two walls. In the middle was a dry walkway. All of God s people walked through the water on dry land! (Have the kids shake their paper then divide into two teams. Make two rows with a walkway in between them.) The angel of God moved behind the people and protected them from the king s army. In fact, while it was night on the king s side, God made it light as the people were traveling through the sea. When all the people got to the other side, God told Moses to stretch out his hand over the waters. Suddenly the waters closed. God took care of His people! They were so excited that they began singing songs to God to thank Him for saving them from the evil king. Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus to take our punishment. 3. Ask God to help you trust Him to protect you. Memory verse for younger children: [God] did wonders and miraculous signs in Egypt [and] at the Red Sea. Acts 7:36 Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 17 Page 4

Learning Activities Memory verse activity Cut out figures of Egyptians. Write the memory verse on a blue sheet of paper. Use tape to put the fallen Egyptians in the Red Sea (blue paper). Talk about the miracles and wonders that God did. Test your memory Bring blue helium balloons. Tie a string on each balloon. Write a key fact on each one. Tie the balloons to the wrists of the children. Allow each child to hold their balloon and step up as you talk about the fact written on the balloon they are holding. As you tell about the Red Sea parting, ask them to release the balloon they are holding to demonstrate the Red Sea Parting. Taste activity Bring a drink that is a blue color. Remind the children that the Israelites walked through the Red Sea on dry land. A fun snack idea is to split a banana into two pieces lengthwise. Put blue Jell-O on each side to illustrate the water. In the middle add crushed graham crackers for the dry land. Remind the children that the Israelites walked through the Red Sea on dry land. Think about it A pillar of fire led the Israelites by night. A pillar of cloud led them in the day. God continually made His presence known. Talk about how we know that God is with us. God parted the Red Sea and made a way for Israel to get away from the Israelites. Talk about how God made a way for us to get away from sin when He sent Jesus to die on the cross for ours sins. The Israelites were leaving the home they had known. Their people had lived in Egypt for 400 years. They had been slaves. Their lives would change dramatically. Talk about what the Israelites might have felt. Moses told Israel, "Don't be afraid. Stand firm. You will see how the Lord will save you today. God saved Israel from their enemies. Talk about how God protects us from our enemies. Touch activity Bring bubbles. Let the children run away from the bubbles. Remind them that Israel crossed on dry ground. Bring a white bed sheet to make a pillar of cloud. Talk to the children about how God made His presence known to Israel protecting them with the pillar of cloud. (Be sure to explain that we don t really know what the pillar of cloud looked like.) Run and play Put the children into three groups. Bring two blue bed sheets, or blue construction paper. Have two groups form the walls of the Red Sea. Ask the third group to run through the Red Sea. Take turns so that everyone gets to run through the Red Sea. Listen As the children take time for silence, remind them that God wants to protect us. Sing Sing God is So Good, Pharaoh, Pharaoh, or another song related to the story. Reach out During class, pray for kids that did not come today. Ask the children to go with you to deliver coloring pages and balloons for those who did not attend. Read the Bible to the child.
