sustainably from the forest Sales EUR 4.9 billion; personnel 11,000 Production units in 9 countries and sales offices in 26 countries Parent company Metsäliitto Cooperative Owned by 123,000 forest owners in Finland representing 5.3 million hectares of forests or 48% of all Finnish private forests. Metsä Tissue Metsä Board Metsä Fibre Metsä Wood Metsä Forest Tissue and cooking papers Board and paper Pulp Wood products Wood supply and forestry services Sales: 1.0 billion Personnel: 2.800 Sales: 2.0 billion Personnel: 3,100 Sales: 1.3 billion Personnel: 900 Sales: 0.9 billion Personnel: 2,500 Sales: 1.5 billion Personnel: 900 2 We turn renewable wood into sustainable, safe and recyclable products that improve Metsä your Group quality of life.

Our products come from sustainably managed Northern forests Our wood comes mainly from family owned forests. 123,000 of them are also members of our parent company, Metsäliitto Cooperative. The Group s wood supplies by country (2013) 1,000 m 3 (solid over bark) Finland 72% Baltic countries 9% Sweden 8% Russia 11% Northern forests are rich with wood and water resources. Here wood grows much more than is harvested. With our knowhow, we turn this endlessly renewable resource into safe and recyclable products. Our target is to keep the amount of certified wood in our operations above 80%. 3

Every part of the tree is used for the purpose it suits best Pulp wood Fresh branched log Dry branched log Crooked butt end for pulp 10% Sawdust for pulp and paper production and for energy production 30% Wood chips for pulp and paper production 10% Bark for energy production 50% Sawn timber for building and construction 4

Doing more with less is what we do best The forest industry is a benchmark for resource efficiency We continue to invest significantly into making our processes more material efficient 5 Source : CEPI,FFIF 6/4/2014 Less Raw Materials Efficient processes. Minimization of material losses Less Water Water management optimization. Advanced technologies and closure of water circuits Less Energy Systematic energy management. Energy efficient processes and technologies. Less Waste Waste and sidestream utilisation. Efficient technologies.. Added Value Refining natural raw materials and side streams into valueadded products, chemicals and fuels.

Efficient packaging by Metsä Board ORIGINAL PACKAGING 1. The same number of cartons but with less weight. 32% less weight Less transported material Less packaging waste Fully recyclable METSÄ LIGHTWEIGHT PACKAGING BOARD 2. Safe packaging from fresh fibres with known origin Naturally pure No contaminants In compliance with laws and regulations 6

Continuous improvement brings benefits Development at Metsä Board s mill The utilisation of production waste such as ash from the power plant has developed positively Air emissions have decreased due to changes at the power plant Packaging board is even lighter in weight than before thanks to development in pulps Less landfill waste -98% Better air quality NOx -40% Further lightweighting of packaging board -2% Fact Efficient and smooth running of production at the mill is essential for good environmental performance and the efficient use of resources. 7

SAGA papers to fight food spill 1,5-year pilot was conducted with SAGA Cook & Chill papers and Lahden Ateria, a municipal foodservice Food spill was reduced by using cooking paper. Per one GN dish, one more portion can be used when the food is not stuck on the dish. Without the paper, this food would go to waste. Food spill of served food -50% Fact Cooking papers help to reduce food spill. They also save time, effort and energy in baking, cooking and washing-up. 8

Our by-products and waste are valuable raw materials 91% of the waste we generate is recycled in material or energy recovery. Waste management in 2013 47% 9% 0% 44 % Material recycling Energy recovery Landfilled waste Hazardous waste Our main waste fractions are fibre sludge, ashes from energy production and lime ash from chemical pulp production. The by-products from our processes, such as saw dust, bark and dry wood chips are used as fuel in energy production. Other residuals can be further used e.g. as fertiliser in landfill capping or in earth construction. Surplus by-products are sold to external customers for further processing. New forms of upgrading are continuously sought to increase value added of waste. 9 6/4/2014 Tytti Peltonen

Mill waste is utilized mainly in geotechnical construction 5% Forest fertilizer for swamp based forests Ash 10% Landfilling Fibre sludge and de-inking sludge Lime waste 10% Others e.g. soil amendment and agricultural fertilizer 45% Geotechnical construction for building e.g. sports fields Green liquor waste 30% Landfill construction for building protective layers with low permeability 10

Ash for forest fertilizer and geotechnical construction Ash returns nutrients back to nature For stands in need of potassium and phosphorus, 4 6 ton per hectare is distributed with a harvester Ash is used in geotechnical construction Ash replaces virgin soil in geotechnical construction, e.g. industrial fields and roads Forest fertilizer of total waste 5% Geotechnical construction of total waste 45% Fact has registered several productions sites to the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira as producers of forest fertilizer ash. 11

The first next-generation bio-product mill in the world Äänekoski bio-product mill more than a traditional pulp mill is planning the biggest investment in the forest industry in Finland (EUR 1.1 billion) Efficient production of high-quality pulp Integrated production of new bio-products Resource-efficient way of using all production side streams Helps Finland to reach its targets for the use of renewable energy 12

Make the most of Metsä. 13 6/4/2014 Tytti Peltonen
