6 Committed to Research & Development In 1987 a KMW Biomass Fired Energy System was installed at ORTECH International located in Mississauga, ON for the purpose of research. The system is used to test the suitability of different types of waste material as fuel for power production, while monitoring their effects on the environment. Successful combustion tests have been done on such materials as RDF from municipal waste, scrap tires, waste paper, wood wastes and rice husks to list a few.
7 Committed to Research & Development In 1999 a second KMW Biomass Fired Energy System was installed for research purposes at the CANMET Energy Technology Centre in Ottawa, ON. KMW has also collaborated with McGill University, Montreal as an industrial partner in a 4-year Strategic Project.

9 Recent Projects Location: Buffalo, Minnesota I. Kruger Inc., NC (Veoliawater) and KMW installed a dryer and a combustion system for the safe disposal of the biosolids at the town s waste water treatment plant. Location: Cherokee, Iowa Lundell, Inc. and KMW installed a system at the Cherokee County Landfill to sort and recycle materials from the municipal waste stream. The balance of the waste is processed into a pelletized fuel and sold to customers.
10 Recent Projects Location: Unity, Saskatchewan KMW installed a biomass boiler system to produce process steam for an ethanol plant. The fuel is oat hulls acquired from an Oat mill. Location: Plaster Rock, New Brunswick KMW installed a biomass boiler system to produce process steam for a Sawmill (former Fraser Papers) utilizing their bark and sawdust as fuel source. The system has the capability of future generation of electric power.
11 Kirkland Lake Power Corp. 1989, Northland Power developed a combined cycle power generating plant in Northern Ontario. Total power capacity of 102 MW, with the majority of power coming from 3 gas turbines while 17 MW comes from a wood waste fired steam plant. KMW developed a conceptual design to fit the budget, which resulted in 3 shop assembled and shop tested combustion and boiler modules. As this design passed the budget test, KMW was contracted to engineer, design and supply the wood waste fired combustion systems for this project. This innovative design, the first of its kind in North America, proved to be very successful.
12 Foothill Greenhouses Ltd. Located in Kettleby, ON, a 15 acre operation producing cucumbers. Hot water system. Started up Second system started up System sized for 20 million Btu/hr (600 BHP) each. 100% of energy required for their operation is produced by the Wood Fired Energy System. Biomass is acquired from local sources. Displacement of 3 million cubic meters of natural gas annually. Custom designed to fit into existing building layout.
13 Western Pulp Limited Partnership Located in Port Alice, BC; has been burning wood waste since the mill started in Installed in 1994, a KMW combustion System to condition fuel in order to increase steam capacity of the existing power boilers. Produces 500 MT/D of a wide range of viscous sulphite pulp grades. Consumes approx. 220 wet tons per day of a mixture of wood fines, bark, knots and sludge from waste water treatment plant. A blend box is connected to a drier for pre-drying of fuel, which is then conveyed to existing power boiler for steam production.
14 Taylor Lumber Co. Ltd. Located in Middle Musquodoboit, NS produces 8-10 million board feet per year of kiln dried and heat treated lumber. In 1993 installed a Wood Fired Power Plant which produces 20,000 lb/hr of saturated 230 psig. Supplies steam for kilns and creates all power required for their operation. Any surplus of electric power is sold to a local Utility Company. Approximately 25,000 wet tons of wood waste is consumed annually Producing 1,150 kw of electric power.
15 Spruce Falls Inc. Located in Kapuskasing, ON 3 KMW shop assembled combustion chambers were installed in Total boiler output 240,000 lbs/hr. 3 shop assembled package boilers are mounted directly above the combustion chambers. At design, the plant utilizes approximately 1,000 tons of fuel per day. Sludge makes up approximately 27% of the fuel mixture with the balance of it consisting of bark and mill residue at 62% moisture content on a wet basis.
16 Ouje Bougoumou Cree Nation Village located in Northern Quebec with a unique heating system designed by KMW. All heat consumers from houses, school, medical clinic to band office are connected to the central heating plant. System equipped with a 1 MW Wood Fired Energy System installed in In 1998 a second Energy System was added producing 1.7 MW heat capacity. During summer months the smaller boiler carries the lower heating demand and in the winter months both boilers work together providing enough heat for the entire village At peak demand, the 2 boilers consume approx. 25 wet tons of sawdust per day, which is acquired from a local sawmill.
17 Grande Prairie EcoPower Centre This Power Utility Plant is located in Alberta. The design includes two parallel wood fired packaged boilers. 25 MW of electric power is produced. Total boiler output is 226,000 lbs/hr. At design capacity, the plant utilizes approximately 950 tons of fuel per day, consisting of wood residue from sawmills. Power is sold to the utility grid while the nearby sawmill also receives steam and power.
