WSESU English Language & Literature Curriculum Framework WSESU ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE STANDARDS 5.8 TYPES OF LITERATURE Students read a variety of types of literature, fiction and nonfiction (e.g., poetry, drama, essays, folklore and mythology, fantasy and science fiction, and public documents such as newspapers and periodicals). 5.9 AMERICAN LITERATURE Students interpret contemporary and enduring works of American literature, and understand how important themes of American experience have developed through time. 5.10 LITERARY TRADITIONS Students interpret works of diverse literary traditions including works by women and men of many racial, ethnic, and cultural groups in different times and parts of the world. 5.11 LITERARY ELEMENTS AND DEVICES Students use literary elements and devices including theme, plot, style, imagery, and metaphor to analyze, compare, interpret, and create literature. 5.13 RESPONDING TO TEXT Students respond to literary texts and public documents using interpretive, critical, and evaluative processes. English Language & Literature PERFORMANCE EXPECTATION # 10: Express, create, evaluate and understand their relationship to the world, past and present, through the Language Arts 5.13 Responding to text Students respond to literary texts and public documents using interpretive, critical, and evaluative processes. 1. Art Activities such as creating advertisements, collages, dioramas, drawings, murals, paintings, sculptures, story mapping, masks, book jackets, cartoons, and mobiles. 2. Book Selections which includes developing informed preferences for self-selecting books and distinguishing between genres. 3. Discussions which include teacher led discussions through focusing questions and student led discussions through literature circles. 4. Musical selections to accompany a presentation or reflect the mood of a genre or culture. 5. Oral Presentations such as author day, a biography tea, book talks, retelling a story, and reports on an author or genre. 6. Performances including dancing or pantomiming a scene from a book, dramatization of a chapter or scene from a play, a retelling using puppets, and skits. 7.
