LOW COST STANDARD THERAPEUTICS Oct. - Dec. 2013 NEW SCHEDULE H1 INSERTED IN DRUGS AND COSMETICS RULES : The government has amended the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules to insert Schedule H1 category to regulate the use of antibiotics in the country. There will be 46 drugs in this list, which includes third and fourth generation antibiotics and habit forming drugs. These rules have been watered down due to resistance from traders. The original proposal had 91 drugs. It was also proposed that two prescriptions would be needed to purchase an antibiotic, which has been done away with. The list includes - Alprazolam, Balofloxacin, Buprenorphine, Capreomycin, Cefdinir, Cefditoren, Cefepime, Cefetamet, Cefixime, Cefoperazone, Cefotaxime, Cefpirome, Cefpodoxime, Ceftibuten, Ceftizoxime, Ceftriaxone, Chlordiazepoxide, Clofazamine, Codeine, Cycloserine, Diazepam, Diphenoxylate, Doripenem, Ertapenem, Ethambutol Hydrochloride, Ethionamide, Feropenem, Gemifloxacin, Imipenem, Isoniazid, Levofloxacin, Meropenem, Midazolam, Moxifloxacin, Nitrazepam, Pentazocine, Prulifloxacin, Pyrazinamide,Rifabulin, Rifampicin, Sodium Para-aminosalicylate, Sparfloxacin, Thiacetazone, Tramadol, Zolpidem. Preparations containing the above drug substances and their salts excluding those intended for topical external use (except ophthalmic and ear or nose preparations) containing above substances are also covered by this Schedule. These drugs need to be labeled with the symbol Rx in red conspicuously on the left top corner of the label. The warning - " IT IS DANGEROUS TO TAKE THIS PREPARATION EXCEPT IN ACCORDANCE WITH MEDICAL ADVICE. - NOT TO BE SOLD BY RETAIL WITHOUT THE PRESCRIPTION OF A REGISTERED MEDICAL PRACTITIONER " should be in a box with a red border.

The supply of medicines specified in Schedule H1 shall be recorded in a separate register at the time of supply giving details of the name and address of the prescriber, the name of the patient, the name of the drug and the quantity supplied. These records shall be maintained for three years. The rules will come into force after six months of their publication in the official gazette, dated August 30, 2013.
