Introduction This synopsis will examine the reason for Twelve Years a Slave s success both as a modern Hollywood production and as an autobiography from the mid 1800 s. The synopsis will attempt to explain why the story of Solomon Northup, the protagonist of Twelve Years a Slave, is such a fascinating work of literature and why it still has impact on an audience today. Problem Definition The recent adaption of the book Twelve Years a Slave into the award winning Hollywood production of the same name brings renewed life to a story that is more than a hundred and fifty years old. That a story this old has won three Academy Awards, as well as reaching 174 th place on IMBD s list of the best movies of all times, shows that the movie tells a story that has not lost its value with the passing of time. This opens the question of why Twelve Years a Slave, both a movie and as a book, has the ability to capture an audience today in the same way it did in its contemporary time. Delimitation This project will not be focusing directly on the movie as a media, describing what cinematographic tools make the movie what it is. It will instead put focus on the story of Twelve Years a Slave and investigate the genre and historical importance of literary works like this. Summary The story starts out by introducing how the father of the protagonist is free from slavery by his former master and how the protagonist Solomon Northup, in turn, inherits this freedom. He is born in New York where he works different jobs, but mostly as a skilled violinist. However, in 1841 work is scarce and when two respectable looking gentlemen offers him a job he is quick to agree. Little does he know that the two gentlemen are actually going to drug him and ship him off to Washington DC. Solomon wakes up in a slave pen and sent off to Virginia after being whipped and told that he is a slave. Solomon s journey ends in New Orleans, but on the way he learns that he is not the only freeman who has be

kidnapped. Solomon is eventually sold and is told that his name henceforth is Platt and that he was never a freeman. The next many chapters describe Solomon s life with various slavers, some are good men but most are sadistic and cruel. Solomon changes hands numerous times and is lent out like cattle. He however manages for most parts to stay ahead due to his education and resourcefulness. He optimizes efficiency of the work and improves living conditions for the other slaves. During these chapters he tells many of the other slaves stories. Solomon becomes their only voice since many of the other slaves do not survive the hardship of their profession. Several times Solomon tries to contact his family to have them free him, but he is continuously unsuccessful. Eventually he meets an abolitionist by the name Bass who agrees to travel to New York to find Solomon s family. Eventually Solomon s old friend and attorney makes the travel from New York and Solomon is reunited with his family after twelve years in captivity. The very last chapter describes the trial against Solomon s kidnappers, but since black people, at the time, were not allowed to testify, they all walk free. A Historical Source When reading a book like Twelve Years a Slave it is important to have an understanding of what, today, is sometimes referred to as Black History. It is commonly understood that communities are created through a shared history and this was indeed the case among the Afro- Americans. However, the Afro- American community differs from other communities in a very significant way. Many other communities are able to track their heritage back to ancient ancestors and thus create a sense of unity among their members. This, however, was a not a possibility amongst the Africans who where shipped to America on slave ships. These slaves came from all over Africa where they had been taken from their homes and families. The colonizers in many ways treated Africans as one people and held little regards for the fact that slaves came from different tribes and even different countries. This meant that the slaves ended banded up with people whom they shared no history with and often not even a language (Campbell & Kean, 2012:87). This meant that when they came to America they

began the process of defining a completely new community that had very little common ground save for the treatment and attributes the colonizers gave them. This meant that everything that happened subsequent to their coming to American was part of a process of defining a people. Much of this history started out as songs of stories delivered mouth- to- mouth since the slaves lacked writing material and skill to produced written history, not to mention that fact that few slave owners would allow such practice (Campbell & Kean, 2012:86f). The Story of the Subaltern Because of the lack of written testimonies, much of what happened to slaves during these years is, to a large extent, lost. This is due to the fact that the history books we have access to from the time pays very little notice to the slaves. While there are information to gain about the slaves and their masters, it focuses more on slaves as a workforce than it considers their story as a people. This theme of leaving out certain perspectives of the history is a well- known phenomenon. Winston Churchill s quote: History is written by the victors describes the natural manipulation of history that happens after a war, the victor will end up looking like the good guy and less heroic deeds may disappear from the history. Much of the same is the case for the history of the slaves. The white man wrote the history and thus the exploitations of the blacks are to a certain extent left out. The phenomenon is known as the history of the Subaltern. The Subaltern is a definition for suppressed minorities whose stories are left out or overshadowed by the suppressor (Prakash, 1994:1477). All this makes subaltern studies an extremely interesting field of study since it entails stepping into unexplored areas of history. It holds the prospect of discovering complete new perspectives on historic events, which, needless to say, is most historians wet dream. Getting access to these achieves of knowledge can however be quite the challenge. The stories and songs told by the slaves were rarely recorded and many are lost. Furthermore one might question how much the stories have changed form over the years. Solid evidence is hard to come by and this is one of the main reasons why slave narratives as a genre have proven an invaluable source of information.

Slave Narratives as a Genre The slave narratives were an attempt to capture the lost history of the slaves. Former slaves were encouraged to write their experiences or dictate them so that others might write them down. With the slave narratives, the history of the blacks finally began to surface. Most of them were written as biographies or memoirs, telling the personal experiences of the former slaves lives. It is safe to assume that the slave owners as well as the American people would have dismissed the first of these stories as being exaggerated and untrue. However, due to the number of publications, as well as the detailed descriptions of conditions, plantations and slavers, it was simply impossible to ignore the more than 6.000 accounts (Internet Source 1). These traits are very present in Twelve Years a Slave. Northup is very minded to detail when it comes to his owners and their enterprises: Our master s name was William Ford. He resided then in the Great Pine Woods in the parish of Avoyelles, situated on the right bank of Red River, in the heart of Louisiana (Northup, 1996:61f) Publications like Twelve Years a Slave made the true story of slavery available to the general American population and can be assumed to have had a significant influence on the contemporary debate of slavery. Suddenly the cruel and inhuman treatment of the slaves was undeniable and the narratives served as fuel on an already heated topic. Time of Publication There was however more to it than just sharing the stories of the slaves. The first slave narratives were written around 1700 th, but it was not until the 1840s the genre really gained momentum (Internet Source 1). Anti- slavery was already on the agenda and the slave narrative gave substantial evidence to the claim that slavery must end. Twelve Years a Slave was published in 1853 just one year after the bestseller Uncle Tom s Cabin (Internet source 2). This turned out to be a potent time indeed. Uncle Tom s Cabin had already had a huge influence on the

view on slavery, but while it was inspired by real events, it was fictional. Twelve Years a Slave, however, was an uncut memoir that told a story similar to that of Uncle Tom. This lent credit to the debate that Uncle Tom s Cabin had started and some argue that it indirectly had a hand in causing the civil war in 1861. The link between the two books is undeniable and Northup even goes as far as to dedicate his book to author of Uncle Tom s Cabin: To Harriet Beecher Stowe: Whose name, Throughout the World, is identified with the Great Reform: This narrative, affording another key to Uncle Tom s Cabin, is respectfully dedicated (Northup, 18: Dedication) Mimicry Man One of the elements that makes Twelve Years a Slave unique is the fact that not only was Solomon Northup a learned man, he was also a free man. This puts him, as a narrator, in a very special place. On one hand he was a gentleman who lived, to some extent, as an equal to the whites of New York, on the other hand, as the story shows, the line between freeman and slave is extremely narrow. Northup is in a position where he is both part of the white society and yet can never truly be like them. Homi Bhabha has a term called the Mimicry man, which describes this relationship between the white man and those who try to be like him. Bhabha describes it as being Almost the same yet not quite (Bhaba, 1994:86). Solomon Northup lives in the whites society yet does not quite fit in. He may be a well- respected violinist and a perfect gentleman, yet to some he is worth little more than a slave. He tries to live up to the expectations of the whites, but can only hope to come close and thus he becomes the mimicry man. The certificate of freedom, which ends up assuring Solomon s release, is a great example of how the blacks are only allowed to be humanized at the whims of the whites. The status of being not quite white does however according to Bhabha empower the oppressed in a way. Bhabha explains how it is a unique position that lets the oppressed view the oppressor from the inside without being a part of it himself. This allows a unique perspective that would otherwise be

impossible. A white man in that time would be influenced by the society, he was a part of, but Solomon is able to describe the society with a certain distance since he was only peripherally invited into it. The idea of mimicry man lends further strength to Twelve Years a Slave as a historical source since it offers a completely new view on a the whites as well as the slaves and thus help us get a more complete sense of the truth. This was also the case at the time of publication where it undeniable held a different strength compared to the whites and regular slaves who spoke on the same subject. Conclusion As argued for, the slave narratives have had an immense impact on the view on slavery in the United States of America. Furthermore they hold a great value of historical information, which has had a hand in forming the multi cultural United States that we know today. The fact that a movie about slavery receives such a generous reception in 2013 testifies to the fact that people feel the importance of not forgetting history. The movie as well as the book offers a unique view at an atrocious historic period but also a time of changing and it shows us how far we have come. Further work Since this frames of this synopsis dictates a fairly short analysis of the subject, it would be silly to think that the topic of Twelve Years a Slave is in anyway exhausted. Therefore this section is meant to be read as a suggestion to what one might have done if the framework of this project had been different. It would be very interesting to compare Twelve Years a Slave with other less radical texts from its contemporary time to see how it portrays events differently. This could be used to account for the influence of the of Solomon s position as the mimicry man, and Bhabha s claim of how such a position will allow one to add new perspectives. Furthermore a comparison between the movie and book version of Twelve Years a Slave would be interesting in order to see what has had to be added and removed to make a book from 1853 work in the year 2013. Last but not least it would be interesting to investigate how the

slave narratives were used as tools in a political campaign, though this would require access to extensive amounts of historical material. While there are plenty of interesting areas to dive further into I shall leave that for others to do.
