Irritant. Potential Health Effects: Exposure to dust and fine particles of charcoal may result in irritation of the skin, Eyes and respiratory system.

Charcoal: Route of Exposure: Inhalation, Ingestion, Eyes, and Skin. Potential Health Effects: Eyes Contact: Dust or powder can be irritating to eyes and mucuous membrane. Skin Contact: Dust or powder can irritate the skin. Inhalation: Exposure to charcoal dust or powder can irritate the respiratory tract. Exposure may result in headache, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, bronchospasm and rarely upper airway swelling or pulmonary edema. Overexposure can have an irreversable effects on the respiratory system. Ingestion: Ingestion may cause irritation of the oral mucous membranes and esophagus. Target Organs: Respiratory system. Eyes. Aggravation of Pre-Existing Conditions: Allergies, asthma, emphesyma, and cold can be aggrevated by inhaling charcoal dust or powder. SECTION 4: FIRST AID MEASURES Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Skin Contact: Immediately flush skin with running water for at least 20 minutes. Removal of Solidified molten material from skin requires medical assistance. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. Inhalation: Move victim to fresh air. Call emergency medical care. Apply artificial respiration if Victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. SECTION 5: FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES Fire: Flammable/combustible material. May be ignited by friction, heat, sparks or flames. Some may burn rapidly with flare burning effect. Explosion: Powders, dusts, shavings, borings, turnings or cutting may explode or burn with Explosive violence. Flash Point: Auto Ignition Temperature: 600-750 deg F Extinguishing Media: Small fires: Dry chemical, CO2, sand, earth, water spray or regular foam.

Large fire: Water spray, fog or regular foam. Hazardous Combustion Byproducts: Incomplete combustion forms toxic carbon monoxide. Large Spill: Wet down with water and dike for later disposal. Prevent entry into waterways, Sewers, basements or confined areas. Small Spill: Dry spill, with clean shovel place material into clean, dry container and cover Loosely; move containers from spill area. SECTION 7: HANDLING and STORAGE Handling: Avoid generating dust or fine particles. Keep out of reach of children. Storage: Store in a dry area away from heat and open flames. Hygiene Practices: Wash hands thouroughly after handling. SECTION 8: EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTION Local Exhaust: Use local exhaust when using indoors. Skin Protection Description: Wear impervious gloves such as rubber or latex. Eye/Face Protection: Use protective goggles when exposed to dust and powder. Respiratory Protection: For normal use, respiratory protection is not necessary. For dusty conditions or Excessive fumes, use a NIOSH approved respirator appropriate for the exposure levels.
