Print this page and cut along the black outline. SHINGLE ESTIMATOR & ROOF PITCH SIGHTER CARD To calculate shingling requirements, you must know the actual surface area to be covered. To determine the surface area you need the pitch of the roof and the total flat area of a roof. Find the total flat area by multiplying the width of the structure by the length of the structure. Determine the pitch using this "Sighter card. Position yourself any distance from the structure as long as you have a view of the slope of the roof. Holding this card at arm's length, sight the existing roof structure and match its slope to one on this card. It may be easier to close one eye as you determine the match. The number below the highest point of the matching slope is the "roof pitch". Find this "roof pitch" number in column #1 of the chart on the right. Multiply the total flat area by the number in Column #2 to determine the actual surface area. Each bundle of shingle covers an average area of 32 sq. feet.
