1) Introduction Starting in the Fall of 2014, the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system is offering free copies of Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus to all active Community College students. Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus is available for students to download on up to 5 computers at a time during the length of their educational career; copies can be downloaded directly from Office 365. Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus includes full desktop and online versions of Access, Excel, InfoPath, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher and Word in both 32bit and 64bit. 2) Accessing the software download area Sign in to your Office 365 account http://portal.microsoftonline.com using your NetID and password. If you need help accessing Office 365, refer to the FAQs for Student Email on the Web Support portal. Once signed in, click the gear icon on the top right of the screen, then select Office 365 settings: On the resulting page, you ll see the Software link available on the left: 3) Deciding which version is best for your computer There are two versions of Office that you can download and install, but it s up to you to choose the right version for your computer. You have the option to choose between Office 2016 or Office 2013 and the 64-bit or the 32-bit version: Office 2016 vs Office 2013 The Office suite is now more than just a set of tools for spreadsheets, word processing and other basic functions. Productivity has been brought to a higher level with sharing, coauthoring, mobility and more in Office 2016. Learn more about the cool new features. In terms of basic usage, Office 2013 isn t much different from Office 2016. Office 2016 leverages more features, slightly different look, and works perfect with Windows 10 and OS X EL Capitan. Office 2016 is also the default download from Office 365. Page 2 of 10

System Requirements Office 2013 and Office 2016 both have similar requirements and it is always better to meet or exceed the minimum system requirements. For the best experience, use the latest version of your PC s operating system: Windows To install Office, your Operating System must be Windows 7 Service Pack 1, or later and have a 1 gigahertz processor or faster (x86 or x64). Preferably, 2 GB of RAM (32-bit or 64-bit), 3 GB of available disk space and a display with 1280 x 800 resolution or better. Mac To install Office, your Operating System version must be Mac OS X 10.10 or greater and have an Intel processor. You will need 8 GB of available disk space, 4GB of RAM and a 1280 x 800 screen resolution for best graphics. 64-bit vs 32-bit By default, Microsoft Office installs the 32-bit version of Office 2016 even if your computer is running a 64-bit edition of Windows. The 32-bit version of Office is the recommended option for most people, because it prevents potential compatibility issues with other 32-bit applications, specifically third-party add-ins that are available only for 32-bit operating systems. If you work with extremely large data sets, projects, documents, audio and animation files, the 64-bit version may be the right install for you. Read more on which version is right for you. Modify the default 32-bit version to 64-bit by clicking Advanced : Page 3 of 10

4) Downloading and Installing on a Windows PC Once you ve determined which package you wish to download, click the install button: When prompted, select Save and save it to your location of choice: Once the file has been saved, navigate to the location that you ve saved it to and run the setup program: Page 4 of 10

Once the program has started, you ll see the Install Office window: During the install, the Office setup wizard will let you choose the look and feel of your Office installation. Another wizard will give you a tour of the Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus software. Click the Next option to navigate the wizard. The We re getting things ready. screen wizard will give you the option to take an introductory look at Office through a wide screen presentation. The install will not be affected if you choose No, thanks to skip this step. Once the installation is completed, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word will be added to your Windows taskbar and Programs. Sign-in to Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) with your NetID and password to enable features like accessing the OneDrive. Page 5 of 10

5) Downloading and Installing on a MAC From the software page, select the install button. Note: The download for Office for Mac 2011 is available until September 22, 2016. Microsoft recommends Office for Mac 2016 to be installed, but you still have an option. The download will be saved to your Downloads folder. If prompted, choose to save the download. After the download has completed, navigate to the downloaded file and open it: Depending on your Mac s settings, you may have to enter your credentials to allow the Installer to run. When finished, the Install Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac wizard will start. Page 6 of 10

Begin by clicking Continue: Select Continue on the Software License Agreement window and then Agree to the license agreement: Click Install to begin the standard installation of Office 2016 for Mac: Page 7 of 10

The installer will begin the installation process: Click close when completed: Now, go to the Launchpad from your Desktop to locate all Office applications. A one-time activation is needed when an Office application is being launched for the first time. The example below is with opening Word 2016, for the first time, after the install completed. Page 8 of 10

Click Sign In and use your NetID for email address (XXXXXXXX@student.commnet.edu). The following screen will prompt to sign in to fs.commnet.edu. Enter your NetID once again and password, then click Sign In. Office will then prompt you the option to customize your preference. Page 9 of 10

6) Office Online Office 365 offers Office Online. Office Online (formerly Office Web Apps) opens Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote documents in your web browser. Office Online makes it easier to work and share Office files from anywhere with an Internet connection, from almost any device. With Office Online, you can view, create, and edit files on the go. Note: Files edited online are automatically saved to the OneDrive. Learn more about Office Online and saving to the OneDrive. 7) Managing activated Office installations The ProPlus program only allows you to have the Office software installed on up to 5 machines. You will need to manage your Office installations if there are no more installs: Sign in to your Office 365 account http://portal.microsoftonline.com Once signed in, click the gear icon on the top right side of the screen, then select Office 365 settings: On the resulting page, click the Install Status option seen on the left: This page displays computers with active installations of Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus.
