Scout Sign & Salute Opening Materials: flag Cubmaster: We are all Cub Scouts here today, but someday I hope that you will be a Boy Scout. Boy Scouts have fun adventures and work on awards and ranks that help them grow up to be wonderful young men. In Cub Scouts we have a Cub Scout sign and a Cub Scout salute. Let s all of us stand and make the Cub Scout sign and then the Cub Scout salute. [Cub Scouts stand and make the Cub Scout sign and the Cub Scout salute.] Boy Scouts have a Boy Scout sign and a Boy Scout salute. Let me show you how the Boy Scouts make their Boy Scout sign. [Make the Boy Scout sign to show the Cub Scouts.] Boy Scouts use three fingers to make their sign. These three fingers stand for the three parts of the Boy Scout Oath. Let s see if you can try to make the Boy Scout sign. The Boy Scouts also have a salute. They use these three fingers and salute just like Cub Scouts do, but with three fingers instead of two. Let s use the Boy Scout salute for our meeting today and give respect to our flag by all saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Materials: Rope for each team Scout Oath strips for each team Scout Law strips for each team Before the Relay Review Instructions: Before the Cub Scouts play the Scout Stuff Relay, it would probably be best to review with and/or introduce to them some of things that they will have to do during the relay. Explain to them what the Scout Oath and the Scout Law are. Read them to the Cub Scouts have the Cub Scouts say them together with you. Use the groupings the three parts of the Scout Oath and the three divisions of the 12 points of the Scout Law. The shorter segments will help the Cub Scouts learn them. They won t have both of them memorized, but they won t be so new during the relay game. Explain and then demonstrate all of the knots for the relay game. The Cub Scouts will know many of these knots already overhand, square knot, slip knot, bowline and sheet bend. They won t each have a rope, but there will be enough ropes that kids can take turns practicing and helping each other. [See Bear Handbook pages 164 and 165 for diagrams for the knot tying.]

Scout Stuff Relay Materials: Scout Oath strips for each team Scout Law strips for each team Rope for each team Masking tape for lines (if needed) Instructions: Divide the Cub Scouts into teams of 8-10 Cub Scouts. Have a starting line and a saying/tying line about 15 feet apart. Have each team line up behind a starting line. Each team s rope should be on the saying/tying line across from them. A leader or leaders will be along the saying/tying line to determine if the words and knots are said and tied correctly. At the GO signal, each team sends one Cub Scout forward. The leader(s) will tell the Scout what part of the Scout Oath or Law they need to say and then which knot to tie (see list below). The Cub Scout must successfully say and tie that knot before returning to their team. When each Cub Scout returns to his team, the next Cub Scout is sent forward. A point is scored for the team for each successfully said phrase or tied knot. Keep track of the number of phrases said and knots tied. The team with the most points wins. By running this relay for a fixed time of 10-15 minutes (do this several times), there is no need to adjust for different sized groups. Each Cub Scout should get the opportunity to try to recite and tie 2 or 3 different knots (at least).

Materials: None Scout Motto, Slogan and Handshake Closing Cubmaster: We have been learning many things today about what Boy Scouts have to learn. Boy Scouts have a great handshake. It s a regular handshake except that it s done with your left hand. [Cubmaster gives the Boy Scout handshake to another Cub Scout or leader, demonstrating how the Boy Scout handshake is done.] Everyone, raise your left hand for me. [Hopefully the Cub Scouts will have their left hand raised.] I d like everyone to take just a few seconds and shake hands, using the Boy Scout handshake, with three other people. The Boy Scouts have a motto. Do Cub Scouts have a motto? [Hopefully the Cub Scouts answer, yes Do Your Best!] The Boy Scout motto is Be prepared. Let s everyone say, Be prepared. Boy Scouts try to be prepared for many things by learning about and doing lots of different fun things. They try to be prepared for anything. What is the Boy Scout motto? [Be prepared.] One thing that Boy Scouts have that we don t, is the Boy Scout slogan. This is a statement that helps them Their slogan is Do A Good Turn Daily what do you think that that means? It means that they should do at least one good and kind thing a day and then keep looking for more good things to do every day.
