YOUR CHOICE OF PLANTS - raspberries Potted Plants Using our own certified root and heated beds we are able to supply potted plants in either 104 or 60 cell trays as required for delivery from early April onwards. These plants are recommended for: Ensuring a full and even establishment of primocanes. The production of grower produced long cane. Whilst grown from certified root the potted plants are supplied at Plant Passport Status. Root The use of root to establish fruiting plantations of raspberry has been pioneered in Europe by Driscolls and is now a widely accepted technique. All established varieties are available as root and rates of 225-250Kg/hectare (200-220lbs/acre) are recommended. Where root is being used to establish individual pots an approximate rate of 60gms per pot is recommended. Roots are washed before despatch and can be held long term at -2 o C. All root supplied carries a PHPS certificate. Bare Root Cane: standard & long Bare root field grown cane are graded, tied and labelled in the field and supplied cut back to a length of approximately 40cm. All long cane are lifted when fully dormant and bench graded to ensure uniformity and quality. If required long cane can be root wrapped and packed ready for storage in lined bulk bins at a charge of 40 per 1000 cane inclusive of the cost of the bin. Long cane will be invoiced when put into cold store. raspberries - floricane Glen Fyne Fruit quality and yield Bred by Nicki Jennings of MRS, Glen Fyne produces firm, bright, cohesive berries that are attractively coloured and comparable in size and shelf life to those of Glen Ample. Glen Fyne commences cropping three days earlier than Glen Ample, continues for a longer season and has consistently out yielded Glen Ample and is easy to pick. The variety produces exceptionally fine flavoured, aromatic fruit throughout its long season and when subjected to professional sensory profiling was ranked superior to all other selections including Tulameen. Husbandry Glen Fyne is moderately vigorous, producing long and strong spine-free canes with close internodes suggesting that the variety has potential as a long cane. The berries are well presented on strong laterals and the canes are easily managed. Glen Fyne is susceptible to Raspberry Root Rot and needs to be grown on clean sites under protection with careful management including routine fungicides. Where Raspberry Root Rot is a problem it is recommended that the variety is grown in substrate. Glen Ample Fruit quality and yield Glen Ample is a mid-season summer fruiting raspberry raised at JHI. The variety has produced exceptional yields of firm fruit in trials and has established new standards in raspberry production. Glen Ample produces large fleshy fruits of about 4-5gms, which are round-conical in shape, attractive and with an excellent flavour. The fruit 'holds' well on the cane resulting in significantly reduced picking costs. The 50% pick date is some 10 days later than Glen Moy but with a considerably longer picking season. Husbandry The variety is spine-free with very upright canes. Spawn production is prolific making cane number control essential. The fruiting laterals are upright and present the fruit well. Glen Ample is susceptible to aphid transmitted viruses, Root Rot, Spur Blight and Cane Rust. Yields can decline over time when husbandry conditions are less than ideal. floricane - raspberries Octavia Fruit quality and yield The berries are large, uniform, firm and easily detached. Fruit size is similar to, or larger than, Tulameen averaging 6.6gms per berry in Scotland last year. The flavour is pleasant and the colour good, if a little dull. Detailed tests at EMR East Malling have highlighted the variety s excellent shelf life; yield is excellent with 3.3kg per stool recorded by JHI. Husbandry Octavia is a moderately vigorous, thorny selection producing upright, leafy laterals with well presented fruit. Bud break is good and the variety crops to the base of the fruiting canes. Susceptible to Root Rot. Resistant to biotypes 1-4 of the large Raspberry Aphid, Cane Botrytis and Cane Spot. The 50% pick date of Octavia has consistently been 11 to 12 days later than that of Glen Ample. Octavia has exceptional winter hardiness and survived -30 O C in Poland in the 2006/7 winter. Listed by all major multiples Cascade Delight Fruit quality and yield Selected by Dr. Pat Moore of Washington State, USA. Cascade Delight produces high yields of very large, very firm, fruit. The berries are glossy, with a long conic shape, easily detached and with an excellent flavour. The variety picked over a 46 day period in the HDC Trial at Oxford in 2012 and was the highest yielding selection in that trial. The season is similar to that of Tulameen but the berries are firmer and 20% larger, averaging 5gms throughout the season in the 2012 HDC Trial. (HDC Summer Fruiting Raspberry Variety Trial (SF41c)) Husbandry The variety is vigorous with long fruiting laterals which benefit from a support system and produces an adequate number of primocanes. Cascade Delight is slightly spined with most of the spines located on the basal portions of the cane. It is susceptible to the Large Raspberry Aphid, which is the vector for Raspberry Mosaic Disease complex and to Raspberry Bushy Dwarf Virus. American trials have shown field resistance to Raspberry Root Rot and this has been supported by UK growers over the last four growing seasons. In 2011 & 2012 three selections performed outstandingly well in trials and the decision has been made to release these selections for larger scale commercial evaluation. JHI has provided virus tested root of each selection to enable healthy potted plants to be released for trialling. Neat, conical berries with a consistent sweet flavour. Very high yield. Severe frost damage in 2012 was compensated by secondry laterals producing a very high yield but of somewhat smaller berries. Possibly susceptible to Root Rot. new selections - floricane East Malling Research have an enviable reputation for raspberry breeding and the last variety to be selected by Vicky Knight before her retirement, Malling Juno, is now available. The release of this promising early selection has been delayed due to a low level of virus in the initial stock which has now been eliminated. Malling Juno A very early season selection. Picking commences at the same time as Glen Moy but the condensed season gives a 50% pick date five days earlier. Firm, medium to large, cohesive berries. Attractive mid-red colour similar to Glen Ample with a good, sweet flavour. Spine free, reasonably vigorous, easily handled cane. Laterals are of medium length and strongly attached. Malling Juno Malling Juno Glen Ample Good disease resistance but susceptible to Raspberry Root Rot. 5000 4000 A very early and even bud break suggests that Malling Juno has potential for early, protected cropping. A limited number of trial plants will be available in spring 2014. Advanced Berry Breeding Advanced Berry Breeding is a new Dutch based breeding company set up by Geert de Weert and André Smaal focused entirely on the breeding of primocane raspberries. The objectives are to produce varieties that are competitive in the modern market place with: High fruit quality Extended shelf life Good yield and flavour Selection is carried out using current protected substrate based growing systems. Licencing Arrangements Please Note: The commercial management of these varieties is administered by Meiosis Ltd and is aimed at ensuring the widest possible availability to the grower along with a realistic return to the breeder. All fruit producers of ABB raspberry varieties must complete and sign a Fruit Producers Licence. Annual royalty payments will be collected on the basis of the linear metres under production at a rate of between 0.50 and 0.40 per linear metre depending upon the total length in production. Trial quantities (less than 1000 plants in total of the three varieties) can be planted without an Annual Licence Fee and Annual Royalty payments, but carry a plant royalty of 750/1000. raspberries - primocane Imara The earliest of the three ABB varieties Imara commenced its primocane crop at the end of July when trialled at Tongeren in 2012 and produced 50% of its 1.8kg/plant crop by early September. The berries are large, cohesive, firm and have an outstanding shelf life. The fruit is uniform, attractively coloured and easily picked. Imara is less prone to darkening than Polka but does need picking on a regular basis. The variety is vigorous and strong growing, producing branched canes with small, unobstructive spines. No significant problems have been identified to date with pests or diseases. Kweli Three weeks later than Imara with a 50% pick date around the end of September in the 2012 Tongeren trials, Kweli produced a similar yield of Class I fruit to that of Imara. The berries are an attractive orange-red and do not darken after harvest. Kweli has an exceptional shelf life being the firmest of the three ABB varieties. The berries are large (averaging 5gms), well flavoured and easily picked. The variety is vigorous and produces well branched canes with no evident pest or disease problems to date. Kweli has performed particularly well in the UK trials in 2012 when grown under polythene and glass and has consistently produced a high quality product that has been well received by the customer and will be planted more widely in 2013. Kweli is suitable for double cropping and looks to be capable of producing a significant floricane crop. Well managed substrate crops have produced fruit that have equalled the top floricane varieties for flavour throughout the season. primocane - raspberries Kwanza Lower yielding than Imara or Kweli but with exceptional fruit quality and flavour, Kwanza has real potential for the most discriminating markets. The berries are very large, averaging in excess of 6gms in trial, well presented and easily picked and have a very bright, attractive appearance. The fruit is orange-red and does not darken after harvest; the flavour is excellent and the berries are consistently sweet throughout the harvest period. The berries are firm and have excellent shelf life. Kwanza is a little earlier than Kweli and about 10 days later than Polka. The variety has a compact, upright growth habit with large leaves and few basal shoots or spines. No significant problem has been detected with pests or diseases. Limited quantities of Kwanza were released in the spring of 2012 and these were enthusiastically taken up by Dutch glasshouse growers and their auctions. It is important that growers are aware of the scope and limitations of these different grades which are briefly described below. This Virus Indexed material is then used by commercial propagators to produce Elite and A Certificate plants for sale. Plant Passport When the most stringent requirements of PHPS are not met Rubus and Strawberries are inspected once only by FERA against a much reduced set of criteria in order to meet the EU Plant Passport standard. PHPS - Approved Health When a variety is first released and before pedigree material is available from the NSA we offer stocks that have been entered and inspected at the Approved Health Grade. This grade is part of the PHPS and uses the same criteria as the A Certificate Grade with regard to the health of the stocks but offers no safeguard with regards to trueness to type.
