Only the ZIP file appropriate for the host system DASD where you plan to install needs to be downloaded. The ZIP file needs to be downloaded to a workstation where it can be unzipped. If installation will be to 3390/CKD DASD, download CD760532.ZIP (3390 system images). ---OR--- If installation will be to SCSI/FBA DASD, download CD760542.ZIP (SCSI system images). You need to have space available on your workstation for both the ZIP and UNZIPPED versions of the files you will download. The file sizes are File Name Zipped Size Unzipped Size 3390 DASD format CD760532.ZIP 1.71 GB 4.0 GB SCSI DASD format CD760542.ZIP 1.72 GB 3.9 GB Prepare for installation Once the files have been successfully downloaded to the workstation, they will need to be unzipped. The data was compressed with the file compression tool provided with Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.10. There are a number of popular programs available on the Web which will decode a ZIP file. The procedure for unzipping is dependent on whether you intend to install the electronically delivered files from DVD, an FTP server or VM minidisk. Follow the (A) instructions if planning on installing from DVD. Follow the (B) instructions if planning on installing from FTP server or VM minidisk. 2
(A) If you plan to install from DVD, you need to create your own installation DVDs. To create installation DVD: The DVD type you use when you burn your installation DVD must be DVD-R. DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW are not acceptable, unless you are certain that the DVD drive in your Hardware Management Console (HMC) supports those types. In order to produce a DVD-R type DVD, you must have software and hardware that support writing DVDs. When burning your DVD, if your software supports options for ISO 9660 with the Joliet file system extensions you must select them. Create a folder named CPDVD on your workstation. CPDVD must be upper case. If a CPDVD folder already exists, ensure that the folder is empty. Unzip the contents of the product zip file you downloaded (3390 or SCSI) into the CPDVD folder. Look for the file named "rsulevel" in the CPDVD folder and make a note of the file extension. The extension is the RSU number that was shipped with the product installation files, for example, 6302. Write this folder and all of its contents onto a DVD Label the DVD as: Product Installation DVD for z/vm v6r3 with RSU XXXX where XXXX is the RSU number noted above. Go to section 'Installing z/vm V6R3' for information on how to install the created DVD. (B) If you plan to install using an FTP server or from a VM minidisk, you should first review Part 3 in the z/vm: Installation Guide to ensure that your FTP server meets connectivity requirements for installation from FTP server or VM minidisk. Then you will need to unzip the contents of your delivered files as stated below. If installing from a FTP server or a VM minidisk: Unzip the contents of the product zip file you downloaded (3390 or SCSI) into a folder on your workstation. If you will be installing from a workstation-based FTP server, the folder should be accessible to the FTP server. The name of the folder can be whatever you like, as long as the entire path name is no more than 40 characters. Go to section 'Installing z/vm V6R3' for information on how to install the unzipped files. Installing z/vm V6R3 The installation instructions for installing from DVD, FTP server or VM minidisk can be found in can be found in the z/vm: Installation Guide, GC24-6246, Part 3, "Traditional installation from DVD or electronic media", or Part 5, "Upgrade installation". Select the part to follow according to the type of installation (traditional or upgrade) that you will be performing. Review the planning requirements, fill in the planning worksheets and then follow the instructions in Part 3 or Part 5 that match the installation methods you are performing (first or second level, installing from DVD, FTP server or VM minidisk (second level only)). 3
