Syngas Purification Units From Gasification to Chemicals www.airliquide.com

Global experience Since the integration of Lurgi, a pioneer in gasification technologies, Air Liquide has widely expanded its know-how in this area. A long-standing leader in supplying industrial gases, the Group is now also present at all points of the gasification to chemicals chain. D The Air Liquide Group Air Liquide is the world leader in gases for industry, health and the environment, and is present in over 75 countries with 43,000 employees. Oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and rare gases have been at the core of Air Liquide s activities since its creation in 1902. The Group designs, builds and operates numerous H 2 and/or CO production and purification units worldwide, for various industries such as chemicals, petrochemicals, refining, fertilizers, etc. Since the integration of the Lurgi group in 2007, the Engineering and Construction division comprises 3,800 employees, spread worldwide over 13 Engineering & Construction centers and 4 Manufacturing sites in Europe, Japan, India and China. Our Engineering & Construction manufacturing site in Hanghzou,China D Air Liquide and Lurgi, your Partners of Choice for Syngas Purification Units We offer optimized technical solutions, benefiting from Air Liquide long operating experience in syngas production (gasification, steam reforming, etc.) and purification technologies (Rectisol, amin wash, cold box, etc.). Our broad Syngas Purification Unit experience ranges from Basic Engineering Design to Lump Sum Turnkey plants. D Safety, Quality and Reliability High levels of safety and reliability are critically important to the success of Air Liquide and its customers. The group is constantly improving its reliability performance through the implementation of the Group s Industrial Management System (IMS) and strict application of international and internal quality systems, ensuring consistency in plant design, construction and operation. SAFETY, RELIABILITY, QUALITY, COMPETITIVENESS: OUR COMMITMENTS, YOUR BENEFITS The world leader in industrial gases at your service...

Your needs Our Syngas Purification Technology (SPU) is the answer to your needs. It is an extremely efficient, reliable, safe and environmentally friendly technology. D Dedicated to the Success of your Industry Gas purification and separation units are key processes in a gasification site converting coals or residues into chemical products. Their performance levels govern upstream equipment sizing, reliability, maintenance, operating costs and downstream synthesis catalyst lifespan. The most suitable gas purification and separation processes are selected with respect to the required specification of the purified gas (CO, H 2, N 2 +3H 2, etc.) and by-products (CO 2, sulfur rich gas, etc.). Air Liquide/Lurgi SPU is the combination of choice to meet your needs. Syngas Purification Units can offer worldwide tailored solutions for various industries: Acetic acid, Ammonia: urea, ammonia nitrates and sulfates, Oxo-Alcohols: butanol, ethyl-hexanol, Chemical products: PC, TDI, MDI, DMF, DMC, Ethylene Glycol, etc. Coal / residues Syngas Purification Units CO2 To fuel Synthesis gas (Syngas) Gasification Rectisol SPU Cold box CO O2 High Pressure Air Separation Unit Sulfur Recorery unit H2 N2 + 3H2 D Towards CO 2 Capture Ready Sustainable development adapts our concepts of progress and growth to tomorrow s world. Air Liquide has long included this dimension in its activities. Over 60% of its Research and Development budget is directly related to environmental issues: reduced energy consumption, cleaner production, development of tomorrow s energies, etc. The CO 2 produced by Air Liquide Syngas Purification Units is ready for capture and storage. With cutting-edge technologies and services to define your solution

our solutions Air Liquide designs, owns and operates Gas Purification Technologies, and can therefore optimize overall processing unit design. D Acid Gas Removal (H2S, CO2, COS, HCN, etc.) Outstanding features of Rectisol allowing several tasks to CO 2 to a residual content adjustable according to be performed in one process the downstream need from percentage range to below The Rectisol acid gas purification technology is a purely 10 vol. ppm, making the purified gas suitable for processing physical absorption process, carried out at low temperatures in further cryogenic separation steps. and high pressures. The absorption medium used is a cheap Additionally, a pure and dry CO 2 stream with very low and easily available organic solvent, methanol. One major sulfur content can be generated, which is suitable for Urea criterion for appropriate Rectisol process configuration is production, sequestration, food industry or venting. the required gas purity. Through a small rate of circulating Rectisol also produces S-rich gas suitable for processing in solvent and thus, low energy requirements, Rectisol removes a Sulfur Recovery unit even from raw gases with very from syngas: high CO 2 to H 2 S ratios which are typically found in gases all sulfur components to a level where a guaranted total downstream of CO shifts. Due to the application of Rectisol sulfur content below 0.1 vol. ppm is achieved, in connection with various upstream and downstream processes, a large design and operational experience is available also regarding removal of trace components. D Cryogenic Purification Cryogenic processes offer many optimization solutions depending on syngas quality, on product specifications and on the overall investment and operating costs of the gasification plant. Air Liquide has developed a standardized and modular concept of cryogenic separation units in order to propose optimal prefabricated units. Front-end purification Since water, methanol and CO 2 in the syngas would freeze and plug the system at cryogenic temperatures (around -150 C, -180 C), primary feed gas purification occurs in an adsorption and cyclic system, in order to reduce their content below 0.1 vol. ppm. The energy needed to achieve gas separation is achieved through a compression/ expansion cycle. Typical purity of less than 10 vol. ppm CO in the hydrogen rich phase and less than 10 vol. ppm H 2 in the carbon monoxide product can be obtained. Nitrogen wash unit The Liquid Nitrogen Wash is mainly used to purify and prepare ammonia synthesis gas within fertilizer plants. The liquid nitrogen wash serves to remove residual impurities such as CO, Ar and CH4 from a crude hydrogen stream and to establish a stoichiometric ratio of H 2 / N 2 = 3:1 required by the ammonia synthesis. CO Cold box Extraction of carbon monoxide from an upper stream typically takes place in 3 steps: Extraction of a hydrogen rich stream Removal of residual hydrogen content in the liquid CO phase Separation of the liquid methane dissolved in the CO In case of high CO product purity requirement, separation of N 2 from CO may take place in a fourth distillation step.
