Introduction As part of our One-to-One Initiative, each Appoquinimink student in grade 6 will receive an assigned Apple ipad. Students who have paid the insurance premium will be permitted to take the device home to work on assignments and coursework. Students will be able to access the Internet from their ipads at school and wherever wireless connectivity is available. Acceptable Use Appoquinimink School District considers Internet, computer, and ipad usage as both a privilege and a necessity for students to bridge the limits of our physical surroundings and to experience enhanced learning; however, the administration, staff, and students agree to follow and adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Appoquinimink School District s Acceptable Use Policy. The Policy provides general guidelines concerning the use of school computers and other electronic devices and provides examples of prohibited uses. These rules apply to all school computers, all school-provided electronic devices, all school servers, and all Internet access and networks, regardless of how or where they are accessed. In addition, Appoquinimink School District considers parents and guardians to be vital stewards of our students instructional support system, and as such, we ask parents and guardians to agree to set and follow reasonable guidelines for supervision of technology outside of school. General Staff Responsibilities: Staff members in charge of supervising students will monitor student use of the Internet and technology to ensure acceptable use and academic focus. Staff members will also attend periodic training and professional development to enhance their understanding of ipad function and implementation for use in the classroom to support instruction. Parent and Guardian Responsibilities: While the district offers a filtering system on the school network, Appoquinimink School District recognizes that other networks may not be filtered. We ask that parents discuss and establish acceptable use in their homes and hold their children accountable to those expectations. While there are security settings available in the Settings of the ipad, Appoquinimink School District will leave those options to parents/guardians to investigate and set as they deem appropriate. 2
User Responsibilities: In order to maintain the privilege of using technology both at home and at school, users must agree to comply with the following: 1. Use of school technology must be grounded in academic purpose and align with objectives and goals of the instructional programs of the Appoquinimink School District. 2. Network accounts and hardware, including Google Apps for Education, Schoology, school provided web based services, ipads, and accessories, are considered school property. 3. Users agree to monitoring and supervision, and recognize that the Appoquinimink School District reserves the right to determine if use of the network or equipment is consistent with the Acceptable Use Policy. 4. Users agree to maintain the software and app configuration of ipads set by the Appoquinimink School District. 5. Users must agree to the following codes of acceptable conduct for electronic communications including mobile devices, electronic mail, messaging, social networking, and Web involvement and applications: a. Use of these tools should be for academic purposes only. b. When using these communication tools, users must agree to use extreme caution when revealing information of a personal nature. c. While faculty and students are encouraged to use wikis or web based services as extensions of the classroom, those spaces must have appropriate security measures to ensure that membership to that space is limited to the learners involved in the actual classroom environment. d. Teachers agree to monitor student interaction appropriately when students communicate using electronic means as a group (i.e. Schoology, blogs, wikis, etc.) 6. Network accounts and ipads are to be used only by the authorized user of the account. a. Students agree to keep their username, password, and passcode (for ipads) private. b. ipads should be considered the same as a personal class notebook and students should not use another student s ipad for class or for studying. c. ipads should be kept locked by the account holder when not in use. 7. Students will care for the network, hardware, and software as tools of learning and will keep them in good working order. a. Food and drink should be kept away from the device. b. Equipment should be kept secure and treated carefully at all times. c. Equipment should be kept charged. d. Protective cases provided by the district must remain on the ipad at all times and must be returned with only normal wear and without alterations in order to avoid paying the replacement fee for the case. 3
As responsible users of technology, students, staff, and administration agree that, as outlined in the District s Acceptable Use Policy (attached), the following are examples of unacceptable uses of technology. a. Access to inappropriate material b. Unlawful purposes, including recording, sharing and/or posting of recorded material, images or audio without prior consent of all parties. c. Security violations The ipad comes equipped with both front and rear-facing camera and video capacities. Appoquinimink School District retains the rights concerning any recording and/or publishing of any student or staff member s work or image. Students must obtain permission to publish a photograph or video of any school related activity. Unauthorized recordings are subject to disciplinary action in accordance with the Appoquinimink School District policy. Consequences: Violating the Acceptable Use Policy of the school and district may result in, but are not limited to, the following consequences: Warning Discipline referral Parent conference Detention Loss of technology privileges Loss of take-home privileges Suspension Expulsion Referral to law enforcement. Since student ipads are school property, school authorities reserve the right to maintain access to and to search school property at any time with or without suspicion or consent. Disclaimer: Appoquinimink School District will periodically review the acceptable use policies and reserve the right to change the policies to further the academic environment of our school. Legal Propriety: Students must be aware of and comply with trademark and copyright laws and all license agreements. If a user is unsure consult a parent or teacher. Examples of violating legal propriety include but are not limited to: Plagiarism; this is a violation of the Appoquinimink School District Student Code of Conduct. Credit must be given to all sources used, whether quoted or summarized. This includes all forms of media on the Internet, such as graphics, movies, music & text. Illegal software or media of any kind. The use or possession of hacking software or illegally downloaded media is strictly prohibited. Violation of applicable state or federal law will result in criminal prosecution and/or disciplinary action by the District. 4
ipad Identification Student ipads will be labeled by the District. ipads can be identified in the following ways: Record of serial number. District barcode Student identifying information. At no time should the identification information, including the district barcode, be covered, modified, or removed. Each ipad is assigned to an individual, and the responsibility and care of the ipad rest solely with that individual. It is required that students assign a personal security code to their ipad to prevent access to the device by others. Receiving Your ipad and ipad Check-In: ipads will be distributed at the end of ipad Orientation Week. Before the ipad can be issued to the student, parents and students must previously have: o Signed and returned the ipad Policy Agreement o Attended an orientation session (both parents and students). o Purchased ipad insurance from the District for $35 in order to take the device home. Individual school ipads and accessories must be returned to the school at the end of each school year for service and updating. Students who withdraw, are expelled or terminate enrollment in the Appoquinimink School District for any reason must return their individual ipad on the date of termination. If a student fails to return the ipad at the end of the school year or upon termination of enrollment in the Appoquinimink School District, that student will be subject to criminal prosecution or civil liability. Failure to return the ipad will result in a theft report being filed with the Middletown Police or State Police. The student will be responsible for any damage to the ipad and must return the device and its accessories to Appoquinimink School District in satisfactory condition. Students may be charged a fee for any necessary repairs, not to exceed the replacement costs of the ipad. 5
Insurance Information The Appoquinimink School District understands that an electronic device can be broken and in an effort to keep costs down, have instituted an insurance policy to assist parents with repair and replacement expenses. All families are required to participate in the insurance plan as part of the ipad One-to-One Initiative in order to take the device home. Costs: Annual Premium: $35 (Non-Refundable) Deductible: 1 st Incident: $50, 2 nd Incident: $50, 3 rd Incident: actual cost to repair or replace. Coverage: The following items will be covered under the policy Accidental damage Theft (must be reported to the police, provide Appoquinimink School District a copy of the police report, and have find my ipad active) Fire, flood or natural disaster Not Covered: The following items are not covered under the policy Loss Intentional damage Theft that occurs when ipad is not properly secured o Left in unlocked area or vehicle o Left in unsecured book bag o Damage to the ipad if it is not in the district supplied case The cost to replace an ipad that is lost or damaged through misuse or negligence and, therefore, not covered by the district insurance policy will be $499.99. Replacement costs for the Otter Box will be $50, and for the charger will be $38. Claims To file a claim, both parent and student will be required to complete a claim form and pay the deductible. The damaged ipad, or a police report if theft has occurred, must be presented. A theft must be reported to the building administration immediately. In case of damage, an effort will be made to provide a temporary replacement for school use until the ipad is repaired. Damage: Do not attempt to gain access to the internal electronics or to repair your ipad. If your ipad fails to work or is damaged, report the problem to your homeroom teacher as soon as possible. If available, you may be issued a temporary ipad until yours is working properly. 6
Storing and Protecting Your ipad Storing the ipad: Students are welcomed and encouraged to take their ipads home daily. Never leave an ipad unattended. When not in your personal possession, the ipad should be in a secure, locked environment. ipads should not be stored in a vehicle at home or exposed to long-term temperature extremes or direct sunlight. The ipad comes with ports for charging and other accessories. Student-issued ipad accessories are the responsibility of the student and must be returned with the ipad annually. The ipad comes in a case designed to protect it from damage and must remain in the district-issued case at all times. The case must be kept free of writing and painting. Stickers are permitted. Caring for the ipad: Care must be exercised when handling the ipad. Do not place an ipad in a bag that contains food, liquid, or heavy or sharp objects. Do not throw or slide an ipad or a bag containing one. Do not put pressure of any kind on the screen. Only use a clean, soft cloth to clean the screen, and never use cleansers of any type. Avoid getting any moisture into the openings. Using the ipad at School Students are responsible for bringing the ipad to all classes every day. IPads must be fully charged at home overnight and ready for use during each school day. Students are responsible for getting the coursework completed whether or not the ipad or the network is working or available. ipad malfunctions are not an acceptable excuse for failure to submit work, and the Appoquinimink School District is not responsible for lost or missing data. Students are responsible for backing up their work to Google Drive or icloud. Inappropriate media may not be used as a screensaver or background photo. Presence of these will result in disciplinary action. Inappropriate media includes, but is not limited to: o Images of weapons o Pornography or sexually explicit pictures o Offensive language o Alcohol or drugs Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher for instructional purposes. Instructors maintain the right to determine ipad use in the classroom. Failure to abide by teacher direction regarding ipad use may result in disciplinary action and may jeopardize ipad privileges. 7
Appoquinimink School District Student Pledge for ipad Use 1. I will take good care of my ipad. 2. I will never leave the ipad unattended. 3. I will never loan out my ipad to other individuals. 4. I will know where my ipad is at all times. 5. I will charge my ipad s battery daily. 6. I will keep food and beverages away from my ipad. 7. I will not disassemble any part of my ipad or attempt any repairs. 8. I will protect my ipad by keeping it in the case provided at all times. 9. I will use my ipad in appropriate ways and for educational purposes. 10. I understand that my ipad remains the property of the Appoquinimink School District and is subject to inspection at any time. 11. I agree to follow the policies outlined in the ipad and Acceptable Use policies. 12. I will file a police report in case of theft or vandalism. 13. I will be responsible for all damage or loss caused by neglect or abuse. 14. I agree to return the ipad and accessories in good working condition when required to do so by the district.
