31 Scriptural Names of God J. Scott 2007 Page 1 of 7 ALPHA Revelation 1:8 Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. Jesus is over the very beginnings of our lives. Today is His, completely. He originates and creates all we need to start our journey for the new year. King of Glory Psalm 24:10 God is not merely a king; He is One excelling all! Chabod, the Old Testament Hebrew word for glory, focuses on the concept of worthiness. The Lord literally outweighs any value compared, or force opposed, to Him. Captain of Our Salvation Hebrews 2:10 The pathway to victory often goes through a valley of sorrow or suffering. But we have this unshakable hope: No matter the scope of the conflict or the degree of suffering, our Captain is present and He has been here before. The Lord of All Acts 10:36 Jesus Christ shows no favoritism. He loves all of us, He died for all of us, and He reveals Himself to all of us. He alone is the totality of all we need. Ancient of Days Daniel 7:13-14 The Ancient of Days, as He appeared to the prophet Daniel, was from everlasting and will be unto the age of ages our sovereign God. He has loved us from before the dawn of time, and He rules forever.

31 Scriptural Names of God J. Scott 2007 Page 2 of 7 My Strength 2 Samuel 22:33 This verse from one of David s songs of praise expresses David s unfailing trust in God. We can affirm with David that God is our Strength, the Source of our sustenance. Capstone Matthew 21:42 While today a cornerstone is placed at the foundation of a building, an ancient Israel the capstone was placed at the very top a true head stone. Jesus is the Stone that serves as the alignment and completion of our lives. Power 1 Corinthians 1:24 We get our word dynamo from the Greek word translated power in this verse. Because the word describes that which is above the ordinary, it would not be inaccurate to translate the title as Christ, the Miracle of God. Lord God Almighty Revelation 4:8 As we reach history s end and stand before the Lord in heaven, our attention will be focused on the holiness of God. There, seated on his throne in a blinding festivity of color, will be the Lord God Almighty. The Beginning Colossians 1:18 Jesus is the Beginning of Life in us that is insured forever. Though He died and was among the dead, He rose to die no more. His resurrection assures the resurrection of all believers.

31 Scriptural Names of God J. Scott 2007 Page 3 of 7 My High Tower Psalm 144:2 In this name, we can envision God positioned well above, but within sight of, our trials, temptations, foes, failures, losses, and the turmoil of everyday life. He provides us with a place of holy calm, peace, and solitude. My Rock of Refuge Psalm 31:2 Rock is a common poetic figure for God, symbolizing his unfailing strength as a fortress refuge. When we share in the suffering and abandonment that Jesus experienced on the cross, we can seek the protection and deliverance of our Rock. Rod of Strength Psalm 110:2 As the Incarnate Scepter, Jesus is invested with the King s authority. He is able to provide us with strength and deliverance from things in this world and in the world to come, even hell itself. The Good Shepherd John 10:11 Shepherds in Palestine considered their role with conscientious effort. They were prepared to risk much for the safety of their sheep, but expected to come through dangers unharmed. The Good Shepherd gave His life for us, His sheep.

31 Scriptural Names of God J. Scott 2007 Page 4 of 7 God My Savior Luke 1:47 In her meditations, Mary probably uttered this name of God repeatedly as she was filled with praise and an awareness of God s presence. We, too, can know God as a Person who cares enough to be our Deliverer. The Lifter Up of My Head Psalm 3:3 We need not strive to raise ourselves up. God knows our weaknesses as well as our strengths. By His grace we can rid our vocabularies of every I can t and be lifted above our fears and failures. Lord of Peace 2 Thessalonians 3:16 When our sense of inner unity is broken, we describe it as being unpeaceful. It is into such situations that Jesus, our Lord of Peace, breathes wholeness with calmness, unity, and reconciliation. God full of compassion Psalm 86:15 God patiently and lovingly draws us near to feed and strengthen us. Like a loving father, He provides us with His comforting words and Jesus, the Living Word. Advocate 1 John 2:1 An advocate is one who comes alongside. God, in his love, has recognized our need for an Attorney and has appointed Jesus to handle our case. When Satan charges us with sin, Jesus serves as Advocate, representing and defending us.

31 Scriptural Names of God J. Scott 2007 Page 5 of 7 Help of My Countenance Psalm 42:11 Though our souls may be downcast at times, we can find encouragement and confidence in our God. He cares about our physical and emotional suffering. Our hope is found in being able to praise him in spite of our downheartedness. A Nail in a Sure Place Isaiah 22:23 In ancient times, victorious kings fastened their trophies of war to the temple walls of their gods. In Isaiah s prophecy, this title signifies that our Messiah has entered the temple of God and secured the victorious promises of God s grace, forgiveness, and power. Judge of All Hebrews 12:23 God speaks as a Judge yet His merciful judgment has been executed in Jesus. Because Christ died once for all, God now judges us as righteous and holy. A Friend who Sticks Closer than a Brother Proverbs 18:24 A friend is one who is always true and faithful. A friend never leaves and never forsakes. No human comrade can support and sustain us as Jesus does. He is a Friend who desires rare intimacy.

31 Scriptural Names of God J. Scott 2007 Page 6 of 7 Head of Every Man 1 Corinthians 11:3 Just as Jesus honored His Father, we are to honor the authority of Jesus. How different our lives would be if we submitted our daily agendas to the Supreme One! High and Lofty One Isaiah 57:15 God s exalted position is evidence of His work on our behalf. Even though our Lord is majestic, eternal, and holy, He desires fellowship with those who have a contrite and humble spirit. Holy Son Acts 2:27 God would not permit death to keep its hold on Jesus, His Holy One. As God s children, we can also be assured that our Father will not allow us to decay in the grave. We look forward to further joy in God s presence. Altogether Lovely Song of Solomon 5:16 In this love poem, the bride describes her bridegroom as handsome in every way. At a deeper level, the appropriate response to our Bridegroom is to cultivate affection for Him by spending time with Him.

31 Scriptural Names of God J. Scott 2007 Page 7 of 7 Good Psalm 34:8 Because God is good, we who trust in Him will lack nothing good if we taste and see. But in order to experience good, we must shun evil and choose goodness in our daily living. The Highest Luke 1:76 In this verse, Zacharias prophesied the wonderful news that his son, John the Baptist, would be called the prophet of the Highest, a great honor. In contrast, the angel Gabriel told Mary that her child would be called the Son of the Highest One deserving all honor. I AM John 8:58 Jesus emphatically declares His oneness with the Father by repeating God s affirmation of I AM originally declared to Moses. This title, by which God wished to be known and worshiped in Israel, expresses God s dependability and faithfulness. Jehovah Elohim Genesis 2:4-25 The name Jehovah-Elohim, meaning Eternal Creator, contains the idea of both original and governing power. It is appropriate that by this name God should reveal Himself bringing order out of chaos, light out of darkness, and life in His image.
