~ Letter Home About Upcoming Events and Donations ~ Greetings Science 8 Students, Parents and Guardians, Feb 2012 Spring is approaching and there are two major exciting events happening in 8 th grade! The first is the annual Exploratorium field trip, where all 8 th grade classes from Da Vinci and Emerson take buses into San Francisco to spend the day immersed in science exploration. The second is the annual rocket project. Students will each be constructing their own model rocket as a way to learn about force, motion, and friction! These two major events can become expensive and each year we ask for donations to help cover the cost. Admission, bus fees, and the rockets cost around $35 per student. Both campuses ask for any donation possible to help cover the cost It is important to note that any donations made go into the total cost of these events donations are not for specific students or events. Therefore, if enough funds are raised between the two campuses, both of these events will be able to occur. Checks will be cashed sometime in February or March, once we know the total amount collected. If you choose to write a check (the preferred method), please make checks out to Emerson Junior High. Money should be sent to the teacher directly with the student, or through the office. In the memo-line, please write Exploratorium/Rockets. Please check one of the boxes below before sending back with the student. I am making a donation to the total cost of the events in the amount of $. Checks may be written out to Emerson Junior High with the memo line of Exploratorium/Rockets. Recommended minimum amount is $35, but any donation can help! I request use of the Helping Hand fund, and have not enclosed a donation. Students that are unable to donate will not be excluded from the events, as there is a Helping Hand fund available for use. You can google Exploratorium San Francisco if you wish to read more about the field trip. Thank you! Sincerely, Gina Dinucci Da Vinci Junior High gdinucci@djusd.k12.ca.us Gary Slizeski Emerson Junior High gslizeski@djusd.k12.ca.us

~ Interested in Chaperoning? ~ Each year, Emerson and Da Vinci request chaperones to help with the trip. Basic chaperone duties include: - Touching base and accounting for a group of approximately 8-10 students a few times throughout the day (in the morning, once we arrive, lunch time, and before we come home). - Sitting staggered throughout the bus with the other chaperones to help monitor students. - Once at the Exploratorium, students are free to roam inside without a chaperone. During this time, you would monitor students as you walk around the Exploratorium and assist them if needed - Accompany Da Vinci and Emerson students into the gift shop if they request it of you (in previous years, they had to be accompanied by a chaperone to go in there. We are assuming this is the case this year as well). More details will be given to those who are selected. If too many parents offer assistance, we will conduct a lottery to pick. Admission and bus fees will be covered for chaperones. Please check the box below if you are willing to chaperone on Tuesday, March 27 th from 7:45 am to 3:30 pm. Yes, I am interested in chaperoning! My contact information is below. Contact information: Email: Phone Number: Are you CPR Certified (this is NOT required to chaperone) Circle one Yes No you will be contacted if you are interested in chaperoning to confirm sometime before the trip
