5. Making a Seder Plate for Pesach: A seder plate is the symbol of the freedom celebrated by Jews at the time of Pesach. A special plate is prepared to remind us of the release of slavery from Egypt into freedom. On Pesach we prepare the seder plate at a special dinner called a Seder and the Hagada is read with great excitement. The Hagada is the story of bondage in Egypt, the 10 plagues and release from slavery during the time of Pharaoh. The youngest of the household asks what is called the four questions. We eat unleavened bread called matzah. Pesach is celebrated for 8 days by orthodox Jews and 7 days by Reform Jews. It is a very special time in the history of Judaism and we celebrate it with family and friends. Explain the meaning of the following: Roasted egg Beitzah -festival offering Parsley Karpas- symbolising springtime and renewed growth Horseradish root tip Maror- bitter herbs - symbol of the bitterness experienced during slavery Chazeret bittter herbs- together with Maror symbolise the bitterness of slavery Roasted bone Tzeroa- representing ancient Passover sacrifice Charoset small bowl of mixed nuts and wine representing the mortar we used in Pharaoh s labour when the Jews were held captive and used as slaves. The small bowl of salt water representing the tears. Bring the following real items for a presentation: Seder plate Roasted egg Parsley Horse radish root tip A leaf of cos lettuce Roasted shank or chicken bone A small bowl of chopped nuts, spice and Kiddush wine mixed together. A small side small ramekin of salt water Then for the activity for the class: A paper plates Glue The templates for the seder plate as seen below for each child to cut out. Have a group presentation of the Seder Plate and what is found on the seder plate with the real items and what each item means. This includes the few Hebrew words associated with it.

MATERIALS FOR ACTIVITY 1,2 AND 3: Below are 3 activiies I designed for the seder plate after we have shown what the seder plate looks like in real life as follows in order of challenge, activity 1 for the younger, and activity 2 and 3 for the more advanced. ACTIVITY 1 PICTURE MATCHING EXERCISE: Give each child a TEMPLATE 1 AND TEMPLATE 2 A paper plate Glue Scissors The children simply cut out the entire circle on TEMPLATE 1 with all the pictures and glue it on a paper plate. Then they cut out the pictures in TEMPLATE 2 and match the pictures on the plate. The Hebrew word SEDER in red must be stuck in the middle. ACTIVITY 2 HEBREW WORD MATCHING EXERCISE: Give each child a picture TEMPLATE 3 AND TEMPLATE 2 A paper plate Glue Scissors The children match the pictures to the hebrew words using the TEMPLATE 3 as a control of error. They simply cut out the Seder Plate Template for Activity 2 and stick it onto the paper plate. Then cut the pictures out from the template For cutting out template and match the pictures to the Hebrew names on the plate. ACTIVITY 3 HEBREW AND PICTURE MATCHING EXERCISE: Give each child a picture TEMPLATE 2, TEMPLATE 4 AND TEMPLATE 5 A paper plate Glue Scissors Le the children cut out the TEMPLATE 5 and glue it to the plate. Then cut out the pictures on TEMPALTE 2 and the HEBREW words in TEMPLATE 4, and match glue them onto the plate using the CONTROL OF ERROR TEMPLATE 6.
