BULLetin 1 Poos Stadel Classic Stadel x EX90 Almerson Camera x GP84 Newlands Detective x EX91 Hanover Hill Triple Threat x VG86 Branderlea Citation Topper Poos Stadel Classic is bred from one of the most wellknown Red Holstein cow families in The Netherlands, the Mina s, who have their home at Poos Farm, the property of the Peeters family in St. Anthonis. Not only has the Mina family enjoyed many show successes, they have also shown their ability to breed good bulls. For over 25 years, members of the family have had bull contracts. Other strong features of the Mina s, besides good type, are their durability and high lifetime yields combined with high protein. In fact, the Mina s are very late maturing. They tend to score just GP as two-year-olds and then steadily improve their score with each lactation until they achieve Excellent status. The foundation cow The foundation cow of the line where Classic originates was born in 1979. She was by Branderlea Citation Topper-Red, a very popular Red Holstein sire in those days. Later it turned out that he bred long lasting, late maturing cows that were capable of high lifetime yields. Although BC Topper was born in 1967, his current proof for durability still stands at 105. This foundation cow, Mina 71, was a typical B.C. Topper daughter: late maturing and capable of high lifetime yields. In the Poos herd she was outstanding. In her first lactation she produced 20% above herd average, while in her second lactation she got even better at 65% above herd average. She continued to impress with phenomenal yields. Initially there was no interest from AI companies. Her production figures justified a career as a bull dam, but the problem was that she d only scored F-69 as a two-year-old. Back then, the True Type was a dual-purpose cow. Since Mina 71 was too dairy for the standard, she scored only 69 for frame, and despite having GP scores for both udder and feet and legs, the total score was set at F69. The classifiers had no idea what to do with a Red Holstein cow. The AI interest came at six years of age when her daughter by Triple Threat, Mina 94, came into the spotlight and the breed standard had evolved from dual purpose to Holstein. Mina 71 then was re-scored and went GP83. The Peeters family started to flush her and several bulls went into AI. Combination with Triple Threat The combination of Hanover-Hill Triple Threat with this cow worked extremely well. Her son Poos Hiltop Red came out with good figures and became a very popular calving ease sire. He is a typical product of the Mina family. His proof shows high components and excellent management traits, including very good scores for udder health and daughter fertility. This explains why he has very high durability figures. One of his first crop daughters has already completed 100 tons of lifetime yield and recently an early second crop daughter achieved the same. A full sister to Poos Hiltop, Mina 147, who was from the same flush, completed in 13 lactations a lifetime yield of 114,115kg M 4.44% F 3.45% P. Mina 71 carried on producing and, at 11 years of age, she completed 100 tons of milk. Her lifetime total was 109,604kg M 3.97% F 3.50% P. In her final lactation she was scored again and went VG86-11yr. Because of her achievements she received the Star Brood Cow status.

BULLetin 2 Champion cow Mina 94 was Mina 71 s first natural heifer calf, and a full sister to Poos Hiltop Red and Mina 147. Like her dam, Mina 94 also stood out in the herd and was late maturing. She classified GP82 as a two-year-old, moved up to VG88 as a four-yearold and went EX91 as a six-year-old. She received her second E at nine years of age when the classifier rewarded her with EX91-2E. She lived to 14 years of age and produced a total of 93,880kg M 4.40% F 3.53% P in nine lactations, averaging 31 kgs milk/day. If she hadn t she been flushed so much (she has a total of 41 registered offspring in The Netherlands), she would have completed 100 tons of lifetime yield with ease. In 1985, Mina 94 was named Champion at the first Dutch Red Holstein Show, held in Wanroij. She was the first cow the Peeters family took to a show, and after this success they participated every year. Over the years Mina 94 secured more Championships and this, combined with her outstanding milk yields, made her a very popular bull dam. She was flushed regularly and bulls by Templedale Rex, Adler RF and Alpenrex went to Dutch AI companies and Peeters even sold an Adler RF son to Russia. AI Land van Cuyk, one of the AI companies that later merged into HG, was the luckiest one with two of Mina 94 s sons returning with good proofs: Alpen Hill Topper (by Alpenrex, a son of Cocalico Originator Rex) and Poos Silvercup (by Adler RF, a German red factor son of Paclamar Astronaut). The third generation Mina 94 also transmitted strongly down the female line. Mina 176 and Mina 177 were born from the combination with E-D Thor. Mina 176 EX90 was named Best Red twice at the Wanroij Holstein show and Peeters is still milking a VG87 Celsius daughter out of her, Mina 341, who has given 89,233kg M 4.32% F 3.47% P in 7 lactations. From Mina 177 Peeters bred a very nice Blackstar daughter, Mina 219, who classified EX90 and had a lifetime yield of 99,014kg M 4.19% F 3.29% P. Mina 219 was the leading cow in Blackstar s progeny group shown at the 1996 All-Holland Dairy Show. Her EX90 daughter by An-Joy Crescendo, Mina 258, won her class at the 1998 All-Holland Dairy Show. Besides flushing Mina 94 to Red Holstein sires and Red carriers, Peeters also used some top black and white sires on her. The most successful combination was with Coldsprings Levi, which resulted in Mina 194 EX90, who completed a lifetime yield of 99,147kg M 4.11% F 3.33% P. She is the dam of German proven Poos Red Levi (by Clara s Orkan). Via Mina 317 VG86 (s. Marty), she is also the granddam of Mina 373, a daughter of Heide Jardin who was Delta tested. She graduated to Delta Donor and HG has several young bulls awaiting their proofs from her. Like a true Mina, Mina 373 was also late maturing and classified GP83 as a two-year-old, VG86 as a four-year-old and VG88 as a six-year-old. She is still milking and has given 54,236kg M 3.97% F 3.59% P in four extended lactations, averaging 34.6 kgs/day. Mina 94 EX91-2E, third dam of Classic

BULLetin 3 European success With Mina 167, a red Newlands Detective RF daughter of Mina 94, we are again picking up the line that leads to Poos Stadel Classic. Mina 167 was one of twins and was classified GP84 as a two-year-old and gave 44,363kg M 4.51% F 3.71% P in six lactations. Her full sister, Mina 166 GP83, had a lifetime yield of 86,703kg M 4.64% F 3.68% P. Mina 167 wasn t a very prolific cow, she only bred one daughter, Mina 243. But what a daughter! Mina 243 was a daughter of Almerson Camera. She classified VG85 as a two-year-old, VG88 as a three-year-old, VG89 as a four-year-old and later, in the same lactation, she went EX90. Mina 243 competed in many shows and with great success. The highlight was her election to represent The Netherlands at the European Show in Brussels. She came fourth in her class and was also the leading cow in the Dutch Red Holstein team that came second. In the same year she was Senior Honourable Mention at the All- Holland Dairy Show. Mina 243 wasn t only good in the show ring. She knew also what to do in the milking Mina 176 EX90, sister to Classic s granddam parlour. Her lifetime yield was 79,370kg M 4.04% F 3.47% P. Mina 243 was never flushed and she bred two natural daughters: Mina 292 VG85 (by Allure) and Mina 378 VG87 (by Reynold Jano). Mina 378 is still milking and just calved for the sixth time and so far has given 63,145kg M 3.82% F 3.33%P. Two great cow families Poos Stadel Classic was Mina 243 s last calf and by Stadel-Red. With this combination, two great cow families have been brought together. On one side the Mina s, who are renowned for their longevity, high lifetime yields with good protein and show winning type, and on the other side Stadel-Red, the type and longevity specialist from HG. Stadel was bred from a great German cow family that is also packed with type and longevity, the D-family bred by the Niermann family from Schiplage, Germany. Like the Mina s, Stadel has quite a reputation in the show ring. Mina 243 EX90, dam of Classic

BULLetin 4 Classic s breeding pattern Poos Stadel Classic is the best of the breed for type. Based on preliminary information he is set to be the number one for frames and stature, and should also be among the best for udders and feet and legs. His preliminary production proof shows a lot of milk, which takes him also into the top 10 of the breed. Amazingly he combines this high milk yield with very shallow udders. Furthermore, his health and fertility traits are excellent, which is translated into a high durability score. The first 24 daughters that were classified averaged 84 points, which is an extremely high score. In every single herd where he was used, his daughters simply stand out from the herd-mates and are a huge improvement over their dams. Classic truly stamps them! They very much resemble his dam, who was a high producing, late maturing, show winning cow. HG sire analyst Eric Lievens, who inspected 21 daughters, says Poos Stadel Classic is an exceptional type transmitter. I was very impressed with his daughters, who are extremely balanced with strong top lines and fantastic rump structures. The udders are shallow and snugly attached. He is simply one of those very rare sires who can breed a VG out of an ordinary cow. Classic doesn t have official calving ease figures yet, but based on the experiences of the farmers who already used him, and his own gestation length which was only 276 days, he can be classified as a calving ease sire. Summarising: Poos Stadel Classic is real class for Red. Lucky Star 30 GP84, Classic daughter
