We strive to keep many of the traditions established during the school's beginning while providing current innovative research based instructional practices. Our faculty and staff are highly qualified and belong to a Professional Learning Community where we are committed to working collaboratively in ongoing processes of collective inquiry and action research in order to achieve better results for the students we serve. Lake Silver is also an exceptional education physically impaired center school with classes that serve students in grades PreK-5. The exceptional education classes consist of students with varying exceptionalities such as: physical and mental impairments. Eligible students are also provided physical, occupational and speech therapy. Lake Silver Elementary also provides services for students who have other unique needs. Students who qualify can participate in the Gifted program, which serves only zoned Lake Silver students, in grades 1-5. This program is a one-day a week resource program. Students with Limited English Proficiency are provided with learning strategies that include best practices for language development. Our enrollment in September 2010 was 609 students. At Lake Silver Elementary School we have a diverse population mirroring the changes and growth within Orange County. Lake Silver Elementary offers a variety of opportunities for students to grow emotionally, socially and academically. One example is the comprehensive guidance program. It is designed so that all students achieve academic, personal and social success. The program includes individual and group counseling services, peer mediation, anti-bullying program and drug awareness education for our students. It also
Page 2 of 17 includes parent education opportunities. Other examples of our special programs include a 28 station Computer Lab, Science and Math lab, Physical Education, Music, Drama, and Clubs. Lake Silver Elementary is an Orange County Magnet School that focuses on mathematics. Each grade level has a Math Magnet theme that corresponds to their Sunshine State Standards. These experiences are an enhancement to the core math curriculum. Utilizing guest speakers and field trips our Math Magnet grade level themes come alive and provide our students wonderful opportunities to apply math in real world situations. Lake Silver actively seeks interaction and involvement with its parents, community, the university system, businesses and the school district's leaders. Together with our PTA and community support, Lake Silver provides several family/educational events during the year. We also have more than 20 business partners through the Partners in Education program. Our students have benefited educationally and emotionally from the continued support from our mentors and ADDition volunteers. Lake Silver received the Golden School Award for high volunteer participation and the Five Star School Award that reflects our school's commitment to planning, training, implementing and recognition of community involvement. These awards are reflective of the wonderful support that we have received from our parents and Partners in Education. With this unified support Lake Silver Elementary has received its fourth "A" in a row for student achievement.
