INFOBrief Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Key Points Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL 4) is the first release from Red Hat to support the 2.6 operating system kernel. This is a significant release as it contains many improved kernel algorithms, all designed to deliver increased performance over the previous release. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 now contains the functional modules from what was previously known as SELinux (Security Enhanced Linux). This offers significantly higher levels of security to Red Hat customers than previous releases, but requires significant (and knowledgeable) administration and configuration. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 is available from Dell to support Intel standard IA32 or EM64 technology. EM64T offers customers the ability to run applications that can expand their memory requirements over the standard 4GB process address space normally found on standard IA32 systems. Customers wishing to use the 64 bit technology can only do so on Dell 8 th Generation platforms. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 now contains a much improved logical volume manager, LVM2. This volume manager now offers users the ability to set up volume Read/Write snapshots, configure Multi Pathing across FC host adaptors and set up disk mirroring independently of the RAID subsystem. LVM2 provides the basic functionality of commercial volume managers, but is included in the standard software distribution at no extra cost. Page 1 January 2006

Key Benefits to Dell Customers Dell has tested RHEL 4 on a broad range of platforms and peripherals. Customers can have full confidence that Dell has qualified, certified and quality assured all the platforms contained in the Supported Platform List (below in this document). Dell offers its customers the convenience of factory pre loaded software for the RHEL 4 ES and WS (where applicable) OS variants at no extra charge. Customers using this service can be confident that their server will be up and running quickly. Dell offers its award winning OpenManage system management software on RHEL 4. Customers who do not choose to have their OS factory pre loaded may use the Dell OpenManage Server Assistant software installation wizard for fast and trouble free software loading without the need for extra driver disks or web downloads. Customers may also use the OpenManage Server Administrator agent to monitor and instrument key events on their platforms. Events such as fan failure or thermal conditions can be detected and rectified by administrator intervention. Customers who choose to upgrade their OS version via RHN and who have access to the (Open) Source code may recompile Dell modules for their OS version and continue to use the monitoring and instrumentation packages. Customers have access to a full storage management application provided only by Dell. OpenManage Storage Services allows administrators to visually configure and tune their RAID layouts and effect full volume management. Dell offers customers full technical software support for RHEL 4 on Dell s PowerEdge Server platforms. Customers may choose between Dell Silver, Gold or Platinum Enterprise Services for their Red Hat systems. Dell customers may choose between either Dell technical support or Red Hat technical support. Both organizations can assist the customer in ascertaining if a fault is hardware or software and then act accordingly. Page 2 January 2006

Product Description RHEL 4 is available in three variants, each of which is based on the same source code. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 AS This product is intended for the most demanding datacenter environments. AS supports Dell platforms with up to 4 CPUs and 64GB of memory. Target platforms for this product would include the Dell PowerEdge 6xx0 servers. Target applications include large databases (e.g., Oracle) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) application suites (e.g., SAP, PeopleSoft). Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 ES Designed for the small office, workgroup or remote office, ES supports dual processor systems with up to 16GB of memory. Target platforms for this product would include the Dell PowerEdge 2xx0, 1xx0, and SC servers. Target applications for this product would include web servers, file servers, and other infrastructure components like Domain Name Service (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), and small Java server applications. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 WS For workstation use and servers used as compute nodes in HPCC configurations. RHEL 4 WS is only available from Dell on workstations (Dell Precision line) or PowerEdge servers purchased as part of an High Performance Compute Cluster (HPCC). Page 3 January 2006

Factory pre load Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 ES is available factory installed on all Dell platforms with 2 CPUs or less. RHEL 4 WS is only available from Dell on workstations (Dell Precision line) or servers purchased as part of a HPCC configuration. WS is available factory installed on both Dell Precision and HPCC compute nodes. RHEL 4 AS is not available factory installed and is offered as drop in the box software mainly for platforms with the capacity for more than 2 CPUs or 16GB of memory (up to 4 CPUs and 64GB of memory), but is available for all supported platforms for customers wishing to standardize on a single version, regardless of the supported platform. The factory pre load image may not change during the life of RHEL4 despite Red Hat issuing regular updates. For this reason customers are encouraged to use the RHN up2date command as soon as their server is operational in order to bring their system up to the most current release. This will also ensure that the software contains the latest security and functional amendments. Page 4 January 2006

Supported Platform List The following current platforms are offered and certified with RHEL 4 in the June 2005 timeframe, supporting both IA32 and EM64T. PowerEdge 420SC PowerEdge 800 PowerEdge 1420 SC PowerEdge 1425 SC PowerEdge 1855MC PowerEdge 1800 PowerEdge 1850 PowerEdge 2800 PowerEdge 2850 PowerEdge 6850 PowerEdge 6800 The following platforms are certified with RHEL 4 IA32. Features and Benefits of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Feature Function Benefit Kernel 2.6.9 Logical Volume Manager 2 Backwards Compatibility with RHEL 2.1 and RHEL 3 The most current of the 2.6 kernel series. LVM allows disk storage to be combined into a logical pool then partitioned according to application requirements. Also includes the ability to dynamically expand logical volumes. LVM 2 also enables customers to take volume snapshots and configure multi pathing. RHEL 2.1 and RHEL 3 compatibility libraries are included with RHEL 4. The latest technology in a stable, tested kernel. Significant changes have been made to the internal management algorithms intended to boost performance. Previously customers may have needed to purchase expensive third party volume management products. The incorporation of sophisticated storage management features into RHEL 4 further positions it as an alternative to proprietary RISC/UNIX operating systems. Can run applications written for earlier versions of Enterprise Linux. Support for Intel EM64T processors Increased user address space over standard IA32 systems when used with the correct platform and OS version. Offers a larger memory pool than previously available to meet the demands of large enterprise applications such as Oracle or SAP/R3 when used with the correct platform and OS version. Page 6 January 2006

Enhanced Standards Support Enhanced Security GCC 3.4 RHEL 4 is Linux Standards Base 2.0 AND 1.3 compliant and is undergoing NIAP CC EAL 4 certification. Support for SELinux components New version of C compiler and tool chain Supports commercial and government standards for application compatibility and security. Helps ensure that user/application files and network communications are secure. Please see the expanded section (below) on SELinux. Enhanced support over RHEL 4 for C/C++ applications. Optimized code designed to improve application performance. Oprofile Application code profiler New tool intended to assist developers in understanding the execution profile of their applications. Diskless System Support Allows RHEL to boot diskless clients and host applications on the server. Helps improve client manageability/security. Multiple clients can boot from a single OS image. All OS and application files along with all user data is maintained on the server. Page 7 January 2006

SELinux SELinux (Security Enhanced Linux) in RHEL 4 is an implementation of Mandatory Access Control (MAC) in the Linux kernel. Standard Linux security is a Discretionary Access Control (DAC) model, where super user accounts can have complete (discretionary) control over every aspect of the system. Traditionally, compromise of the super user account gives an attacker total control. In a DAC system, some applications need super user privileges to perform their functions. By contrast, a Mandatory Access Control (MAC) system provides granular permissions for all users, programs, processes, files and devices. You can safely grant an application just the permissions it needs to do its function, and no more. SELinux was originally implemented by the US NSA (National Security Agency) for internal US government security requirements. As part of its Information Mission (http://www.nsa.gov/ia/index.cfm), the National Security Agency has been involved with the computer security research community in investigating a wide range of computer security topics including operating system security. Potential users of the SELinux package included in RHEL 4 are strongly advised to research and understand the ramifications of implementing the Mandatory Access Controls. Casual or unplanned settings of the security controls can have significant (and sometimes unwelcome) consequences that may result in normal users of the system being unable to access shared resources or applications and the system administrator no longer having the privileges required to grant access or (in the worst case) even log in. Caution is strongly advised, as is a test environment and your manager s involvement. Page 8 January 2006

Product Restrictions High Availability Clustering Cluster Suite will not be supported by Dell. Red Hat Cluster Suite is a Red Hat software product that enables a customer to add high availability technology to an existing system. The clustering software is available as an independent product directly from Red Hat. Customers who require Red Hat HA configurations are advised to contact Red Hat directly. Page 9 January 2006

Red Hat Network RHEL 4 is supplied only as part of a Red Hat Network SUBSCRIPTION service. The pricing for Red Hat Enterprise Linux is an annual fee to the Red Hat Network (RHN) software update and distribution service, rather than a one time product purchase. An active subscription is MANDATORY for a customer to receive support from Red Hat and Dell. Dell offers both a one year pre paid subscription to RHN (the base product) and a three year pre paid subscription. The three year subscription is required for all customers wishing to obtain Dell Gold and Silver Enterprise Service contracts. Dell customers who do not wish to purchase a Dell support product that contains software support (such as Silver or Gold Enterprise Service) should choose the one year subscription from Dell. Customers with an existing Dell support contract or customers who intend to buy Dell support with their new system should choose the three year subscription from Dell. Currently RHN is a web based service that allows system managers to download the latest set of software upgrades and patches from a set of central servers at Red Hat. System managers responsible for more than a single server are able to build logical groups of servers and set policies for group updates and version control across their entire installed base by purchasing a Management entitlement at an additional charge RHN is a very powerful tool for system administrators who wish to keep their systems as up to date as possible while maintaining version control across their entire site. In the future Red Hat Network will evolve into a complete systems management platform for Linux. It is built on open standards and uses a simple, Internet based graphical interface. It also features a modular design as networks grow, administrators can add enhanced capabilities for system updates, management, and monitoring of their entire infrastructure. Page 10 January 2006
