6 I Trainee Solicitor Programme I ByrneWallace Trainee Profile Roísín Bergin PROFILE Name Roísín Bergin Job Title Trainee Solicitor Trainee Placements Corporate, Commercial Litigation Qualifications LLB, TCD, 2011 FE1s 2012 PPC I 2013/ 2014 Qualifying as a Solicitor 2015 Why law? I thoroughly enjoyed studying law in university and decided to pursue a career as a commercial solicitor. I reached this decision with the benefit of working across the breadth of the legal sector; before joining the firm I worked as an intern with the Department of Justice, the Legal Aid Board and completed a Stage in the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. Why Join? I took part in the ByrneWallace internship programme in June 2011. From the time I spent there I knew the firm was the right fit for me. An effort was made to ensure we became acquainted with all aspects of the firm. Solicitors at different stages of their careers spoke with us so we got a real feel for what it was like to work at all levels in ByrneWallace. The culture of the firm is very open and everyone is very approachable. As an intern I was impressed by the calibre of the work trainees are exposed to. The quality and variety of the work is excellent and trainees are delegated a large amount of responsibility. They are treated as integral members of the team. As a trainee my experience has reflected what I saw as an intern, solicitors take the time to explain the background to the work to ensure you know exactly why they have given you a particular instruction. ByrneWallace is an unparalleled market leader in practice areas in which I am incredibly interested, such as childcare law. I have worked in this area elsewhere and I hope to complete a rotation in this practice area in the future. Interview Process I interviewed with a partner and the HR manager for the internship programme. After the internship I was asked back to interview for the Trainee Solicitor Programme. The first half of the interview was based on a presentation which we had to prepare in advance. The remainder of the interview was a discussion as opposed to an interrogation. I was given the opportunity to put forward why I would be a good recruit for the firm. Placements I started my first rotation in the Corporate Department in April 2013 where I spent five months before attending PPC I. I completed my internship in Corporate and I was glad to return to familiar territory. As a trainee I was involved in transactional work across the department s key practice areas including life sciences, mergers and acquisitions and IP/IT. The solicitors are excellent at what they do and extremely client focused; values which are instilled in trainees from day one. I was delighted to join the Commercial Litigation Department on my return from PPC I in April 2014. I have worked on a variety of cases encompassing financial services, personal injuries and property litigation. I have thoroughly enjoyed attending Court, settlement meetings and meeting clients.

ByrneWallace I Trainee Solicitor Programme I 7 The quality and variety of the work is excellent and trainees are delegated a large amount of responsibility. They are treated as integral members of the team. There is never a dull moment in commercial litigation! Despite being very busy, the solicitors are incredibly open and willing to teach which is fantastic from a trainee perspective. Career progression I am coming to the end of my time with the Commercial Litigation Department and I am looking forward to my remaining rotations and the PPC II course. My preference would be to complete a rotation in another litigation department before qualifying in order to decide what sort of law I would like to practise. Through the ByrneWallace Learning and Development Programme the firm has shown a true commitment to enhancing the trainee experience. Trainees are encouraged to attend sessions on a variety of topics designed to build on core skills or develop new ones. Any tips? RELAX! I know that is easier said than done but for my interview I was at ease and confident that ByrneWallace was for me. This allowed me to perform to the highest possible standard and for my personality, rather than my nerves, to shine through.

8 I Trainee Solicitor Programme I ByrneWallace Trainee Profile James Roche PROFILE Name James Roche Job Title Trainee Solicitor Trainee Placements Corporate, Commercial Litigation, Employment Qualifications BCL, NUI Galway, 2010 FE1s October 2010 & April 2011 PPC I 2012 PPC II 2014 Qualifying as a Solicitor March 2015 Why law? I first became interested in pursuing a career in law during transition year in secondary school when I worked with a local solicitor every day after school. I observed that a career in law would prove challenging yet rewarding. The topical and evolving nature of law intrigued me. I felt that the skills developed during a law degree would prove adaptable throughout my career. Why join? Having completed a number of internships both during and after my degree, I developed a preference for working in a commercial environment. ByrneWallace have a market leading position in a number of areas that interest me, in particular employment law, life sciences and health services. I noted that the objective of the firm is to become business partners with their clients rather than simply transactionbased advisers. This strong client focus convinced me that a traineeship with ByrneWallace would provide an excellent foundation upon which to build my career. The fact that so many partners began their careers with ByrneWallace also convinced me that the firm takes a genuine interest in the development of their trainees. The opportunity to rotate across different departments within the firm during the course of a traineeship also excited me. Interview / competition I was fortunate to be interviewed by a number of firms when applying for a traineeship. However my two interviews with ByrneWallace stood out. My interviewers showed genuine interest in me and in learning more about my strengths and interests. The first interview was relaxed and facilitated an opportunity for the firm and I to get to know each other, while the presentation in the second round provided an opportunity to showcase my research and public speaking skills. There were no trick questions, just a genuine opportunity to present myself in the best possible light. Placements I returned from PPC I in April 2013 and my first rotation was in the Corporate Department where I helped to draft commercial contracts and provided corporate advices to clients. I was given a significant level of responsibility which was reflected in the high quality of work I was given. My second rotation was in Commercial Litigation. I had an interesting and varied caseload. I attended hearings in the Circuit Court, High Court, Commercial Court and Supreme Court. Witnessing a case progress from initial advice to hearing stage is particularly rewarding. Since returning from PPC II I have been working in the Employment Department. I have assisted in the preparation of non-contentious advice and attended

ByrneWallace I Trainee Solicitor Programme I 9 This strong client focus convinced me that a traineeship with ByrneWallace would provide an excellent foundation upon which to build my career. hearings before the Rights Commissioner, Employment Appeals Tribunal, Equality Tribunal and High Court. I have been fortunate in working with some of the leading Irish lawyers in their fields. When delegated a task, guidance but also independence is given. Everyone is approachable and more than generous with their time. Work is never given in a vacuum; the background to any transaction or case is always explained. Expectations, learning & development The quality of the work I have been given provides excellent practical experience and has surpassed my expectations of the types of tasks that trainees are delegated. I have been directly involved in transactions and court cases including liaising with clients and corresponding with other law firms. The opinion of a trainee is frequently sought which shows that the firm takes a keen interest in a trainee s development. Career progression The opportunity to complete rotations in four practice areas provides an excellent opportunity in terms of occupational progression. The practical knowledge gained will be extremely beneficial to my future career. Trainees have an opportunity to attend frequent CPD seminars and contribute to internal publications. They also undertake research and deliver presentations to partners and solicitors ensuring staff are informed about current legal developments.

10 I Trainee Solicitor Programme I ByrneWallace Solicitor Profile Áine Duggan PROFILE Name Áine Duggan Job Title Solicitor Trainee Placements Commercial Property, Health Services, Litigation Practice Area Commercial Litigation Qualifications LLB in Law & European Studies, UL, 2004 Study Abroad in Washburn Law School, Kansas, USA, 2003 LLM European Law, UCD, 2005 FE1s 2006 PPC I 2007/ 2008 PPC II 2009 Qualified as a solicitor 2009 Why law? I had always wanted to study law in university. I chose Law and European Studies in UL based on the fact that it offered more than a pure law degree. As part of my co-operative education in UL, I worked in an international law firm in Brussels for seven months. I also had the opportunity to study abroad for a semester when I attended Washburn Law School in Kansas. Why ByrneWallace? Following my work experience in Brussels I decided to pursue a career as a solicitor. I then worked in a small practice while studying for my FE1s. I knew that I wanted a traineeship with a top firm where training is a high priority. I researched the firm and attended the Open Evening they held for prospective trainees. The employees I spoke to were very approachable. They expressed such confidence in the firm and in the training they had received, and this made a huge impression on me. But one of the deciding factors in my decision to choose ByrneWallace was its reputation in areas in which I have a keen interest such as employment law. At the time I had just completed the dissertation for my Masters Degree and this was in the area of employment law. Interview / Competition The application process was by way of CV and two interviews. My first interview was with HR and a partner. The second interview was a presentation in front of HR and a different partner. At the time I thought this was a daunting task but in hindsight it was a great opportunity to demonstrate the skills that I had learned in university. Placements My first rotation in Commercial Property gave me a great start and within the first couple of weeks I was involved in a largescale property transaction. The work there was very client focused and this ethos can be seen throughout the firm. The team I was on was always there to give me advice and help with the files I was working on. The on-the-job experience definitely stood to my advantage on PPC I. My rotation after PPC I was in Health Services. I think it s the human aspect of the work that I found most interesting and the fact that I was dealing with sensitive and challenging cases on a daily basis. We were encouraged to attend court as often as possible as well as client meetings. There s always a lot of paperwork to have ready for court so there s also an element of satisfaction when a case goes to hearing and you know you have put so much work into getting it to that stage. There are diverse areas in the Health Services Department and the solicitors working in my team are experts in their field so I learnt a great deal during my time there.

ByrneWallace I Trainee Solicitor Programme I 11 The employees I spoke to at the Open Evening were very approachable. They expressed such confidence in the firm and the training they had received and this made a huge impression on me. Expectations / Learning / Development Trainees are encouraged to attend CPD seminars given by solicitors in the firm. These legal updates are particularly important for trainees because exposure to as many practice areas as possible is essential in identifying an area where you would like to develop your career in law. It s definitely been a great advantage working in a firm that puts such a strong emphasis on training and learning. At the same time trainees in ByrneWallace are given a good deal of responsibility and you are aware that all the while you are shaping your career as a qualified solicitor. Career progression The in-house training in the firm means that trainees and solicitors are fully informed of legal updates in the different practice areas and this is an essential element of enhancing your skills and expertise. Any tips? Don t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself during your traineeship. It s the best way to develop existing skills as well as learn new ones. Wildcard It s not all work and no play. The firm is great for organising social events throughout the year and these are good for getting to know people in other departments.

12 I Trainee Solicitor Programme I ByrneWallace Solicitor Profile Donal Hamilton PROFILE Name Donal Hamilton Job Title Solicitor Trainee Placement Property, Commercial Litigation, Banking & Financial Services, Employment Practice Area Employment Qualifications BCL (UCD) 2008 FE1 2009 LLM (Commercial Law) (UCD) 2010 PPC I 2011/2012 Professional Diploma in Employment Law (UCD) 2012 PPC II 2012 Qualified as a solicitor in 2013 Diploma in Mediation (Law Society of Ireland) 2014 Background I studied Law in UCD and during my summers worked in a small solicitor s practice near the four courts complex. Here I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time in court. After experiencing the excitement and fast pace of court work, I was sure that a career in law was for me. I had a particular interest in employment and labour law and so applied for a traineeship in ByrneWallace, one of the leading employment law firms in the country. After two interviews and a nervous wait, I got the job. My trainee experience Following completion of PPC I, I started my first rotation in the Property Department in 2012. As a post-ppc I trainee with little office experience, I was very green. However, doors were always open and solicitors and legal executives were very understanding and helped me settle in. The team focused on commercial property so I gained valuable experience working on landlord and tenant issues and commercial development. After six months, I moved to the Commercial Litigation Department. Here, I assisted solicitors working on professional negligence matters, intellectual property disputes, property litigation, and more. This work was extremely varied, which I enjoyed, and I was encouraged to think strategically with a view to obtaining the best possible results for clients. On my return in July 2012 following my PPC II, I worked in the Banking & Financial Services Department where I assisted solicitors providing banking advice to lending institutions and wealth management firms. There was a notable step up in the type of work I was doing following PPC II, and I was expected to take ownership of files and run them under the watchful eyes of my supervising solicitor. In October, I moved to the Employment Law Department and was delighted to join this team on my qualification as a solicitor in April 2013. My working day I don t have a standard working day and it s rare to spend more than a few hours at my desk. I could be in my office working on an employment contract; or providing advice to a client on a transfer of undertakings when a call comes in from someone in need of an injunction. In a short period of time, I ll need to take instructions from the client, brief counsel, draft court documents, affidavits and correspondence, and attend the High Court to obtain or fight an injunction, as the case may be. Due to the sometimes urgent nature of the work we do, every day can be different. As employment law specialists, the team often conduct their own advocacy in Rights Commissioners hearings and before the Employment Appeals Tribunal and Labour Court. This is something that is actively encouraged and as a result the

ByrneWallace I Trainee Solicitor Programme I 13 This work was extremely varied, which I enjoyed, and I was encouraged to think strategically with a view to obtaining the best possible results for clients. quality of the team s advocacy skills sets it apart from many other employment law practices. Training Apart from the professional practice courses, the firm organises regular seminars and workshops as part of its Learning & Development Programme. These seminars cover different areas of practice and soft skills such as legal writing and how to deliver effective presentations. While compulsory for trainees, solicitors at all levels attend as it s a great way of keeping up to date on areas of law that we may not be exposed to on a day-to-day basis. As a trainee, I got involved in the Hibernian Law Journal, a legal periodical associated with the Law Society of Ireland, run by trainee and newly-qualified solicitors, and eventually became Editor-in-Chief. The firm was extremely supportive of my work with the journal and sponsored the edition that I was in charge of, and all subsequent editions. Sports & Social ByrneWallace has a very active social side. I am a member of the firm s Sports & Social Committee which organises regular events including themed Christmas and summer parties, wine tasting and the infamous trainee weekend away. On the sports side, the firm participates in annual tag rugby, tennis tournaments and golf outings. A group of ByrneWallace footballers have played 5-a-side football every Thursday for the last 15 years. The standard has been described as mixed, but it s good fun and is a well-established tradition at this stage!

14 I Trainee Solicitor Programme I ByrneWallace Associate Profile Sinead Murphy PROFILE Name Sinead Murphy Job Title Associate Practice Area Litigation Qualifications BCL University College Cork, 2000 FE1s 2002/2003 Qualified as a solicitor in 2006 The route to ByrneWallace I attended University College Cork, graduating with an honours degree in Bachelor of Civil Law in 2000. I began my traineeship in 2004 in a smaller law firm in Dublin where I gained experience in the areas of commercial property and banking. I joined the ByrneWallace Commercial Property Department early in my career in 2006. I was impressed by the firm s energy, organisation and in particular the people. Developing new expertise I was fortunate to have the opportunity to move to the firm s Commercial Litigation Department in 2008. With my property background experience, my work focused on claims involving landlord and tenant issues and a variety of contractual disputes. My colleagues were very supportive and encouraging during this transitional period and I have worked under some great teachers and mentors in the firm. My caseload has now evolved to include a mix of financial services, regulatory and bank enforcement litigation. There is also a lot of cross departmental work from other departments which offers an opportunity to increase your profile within the firm and get to know your colleagues. Litigation in practice Litigation and dispute resolution is a dynamic area to work in; no two cases or disputes are the same. I particularly enjoy the exposure to the Courts and the opportunity to be involved in sometimes instrumental and important judgments delivered by our judiciary. It can also be a challenging environment as few clients eagerly engage in a dispute which may have adverse effects for its business or livelihood. The ability to empathise with clients, yet remain objectively focused, is important in litigation; and most importantly to think commercially. Any tips? Your attitude will determine your altitude. If you have a positive attitude, a practical approach and are motivated to learn then you are on the right path for your career. As a trainee, it is important to gain exposure to a wide variety of work so that when you quailify, you are capable of adding value to your clients. You need to be able to hit the ground running in a confident and coherent manner. From what I have seen in ByrneWallace, the quailty of work and level of training offered is of an exceptional standard and should provide potential trainees with a solid platform upon which to build their careers.

ByrneWallace I Trainee Solicitor Programme I 15 Partner Profile Deirdre McBennett PROFILE Name Deirdre McBennett Job Title Partner Practice Area Banking & Financial Services Qualifications Bachelor of Business & Legal Studies (BBLS) UCD 1995 Diploma in Property Tax, Law Society of Ireland 2000/ 2001 Qualified as a solicitor 2001 The route to ByrneWallace I obtained an honours BBLS Degree from UCD in 1995 and automatically obtained 5 exemptions for the Law Society Final Exams (Part I). I was therefore only required to pass exams in the other 3 subjects for admission to Blackhall Place. Once I had passed those exams, I commenced my traineeship in a small country practice where I spent a few months before commencing the Professional Course in the Law Society. While studying at the Law Society I applied to ByrneWallace and secured a traineeship by transfer of Indentures from my previous office. I worked in ByrneWallace as a trainee from then until September 2000 when I then completed my Advanced Course. Your traineeship During my traineeship, I spent time in various departments, in particular the Property and Banking Departments. I was given a good level of responsibility and exposure to the clients with whom I interacted by phone and in person on a regular basis. I was given a good level of autonomy to carry out my role but always under the guidance and supervision of a solicitor in the relevant department. I also gained experience in certain non-property related departments, in particular Litigation and Employment Law and these were also very interesting aspects to my traineeship. I qualified from the Law Society in 2001 and spent a short time working in the Commercial Property Department, before transferring to Banking where I have worked ever since. Promotion to partner I was promoted to Partner in June 2005 and since then I have had a direct role in the running of the firm particularly in relation to business development and practice management in general. The lighter side My time spent in ByrneWallace has been an enjoyable and fulfilling one. The firm is noted by colleagues in other offices for a good level of social interaction. Over the years we have enjoyed several work trips to Paris, have taken part in the Rugby Sevens in London and Kinsale and other exciting events. Our themed annual staff barbeques and Christmas parties always create an air of excitement and are very well attended. Any tips? My advice for those considering law as a career is to endeavour to gain some level of work experience during school and college years. I still value the time that I spent in a small country practice during those years as I believe it gave me a very good insight into the workings of a solicitors practice and the importance of client confidentiality while building strong and lasting client relationships.

16 I Trainee Solicitor Programme I ByrneWallace Partner Profile Dennis Agnew The route to ByrneWallace I was in the inaugural BBLS class in UCD and after some travel, I trained and went on to work as a corporate lawyer with another of Ireland s large law firms. When the opportunity of a move arose, I welcomed the challenge of joining an ambitious practice with a growing corporate client base. Your experience of ByrneWallace to date? Byrnewallace is an open firm in that new ideas are welcomed at all levels and people are encouraged to go for it. We are a very business oriented firm and are conscious that it is not our job to give a dry recitation of law but to add solutions and value to our clients businesses. Foreign direct investment Foreign direct investment is key to the Irish economy and a very important part of our business. I am responsible for our New York office which is important to our efforts to facilitate and grow business links between Ireland and North America and win new clients for the firm. Our concentration on foreign direct investment and our continuing recruitment of high calibre individuals all demonstrate the motivation for which I joined. Within the Corporate Department, we are seeing a significant increase in deals flow again as clients engage in mergers and acquisitions and this is very encouraging. The lighter side of the Firm In ByrneWallace we work hard but we appreciate that life is for living too and that ethos is part of the working culture of the firm. It is a good humoured and good natured place to work where people are encouraged to give input and ask questions. We are large by Irish standards but we are very focused on ensuring that culturally this is a very good place to work. Any tips? When carrying out a task, try to put yourself in the client s shoes. If you were the client, would you be happy with how the task was performed and how it was delivered. Try to surpass expectations. Take ownership of a task, ask questions so you understand where that task fits into the greater scheme of things. As a trainee, it is expected that you will not get everything right first time round. Make sure that you don t repeat mistakes. Keep your eyes and ears open. Know what s going on in the business world.
