Roles and Responsibilities of CSM Teacher Education Faculty Dr. Dee Acklie Director of Teacher Education (Head of Unit) (004.02A Unit Administrator. The institution shall designate an individual to administer the professional teacher education program or unit. This individual shall hold, qualify for, or have held an educator certificate.) Director Undergraduate Education Special Education (Undergraduate and Master of Arts in Teaching) Elementary Education Middle/Secondary Education Physical Education Department Roles & Responsibilities Teaches courses in elementary education, special education and Master of Arts in Teaching programs (twelve (12) hours per year; 65% release for administration) 004.03C3 For faculty teaching a combination of undergraduate and graduate assignments, the load may be a proration of nine (9) and twelve (12) credit hours, with total hours assigned within the same academic year not to exceed twenty-one (21) hours. Accreditation o Rule 20: Regulation for Approval of Teacher Education Program (ensures compliance with Faculty qualifications, workload requirements, etc.; verifies that all faculty (regular and adjunct) teaching any education courses hold qualifications and experiences as required in Rule 20); o Rule 21: Regulations for Issuance of Certificates and Permits to Teach (ensures compliance with all certification requirements including verification of program completion, criminal background check and mental fitness, etc.); o Rule 23: Basic Skills Testing (ensures that all students meet requirements related to Praxis exams and required cutoff scores); o Rule 24: Endorsements (ensures compliance with requirements for coursework/content per endorsement area for all programs);
o Matrices (reviews and updates Rule 24 matrices as required by NDE; verifies that curriculum in all programs is consistent with matrices); o Files Report for Annual Reapproval with NDE (20-004 Report) (prepares and submits 20-004 report with matrices for any revised programs); o Maintains regular communication with NDE (must maintain regular communication regarding programmatic and institutional changes); o Key Assessments (oversees designation and revision of Key Assessment Tools, Administration, Data Collection & Analysis); o Coordinates communication with Arts & Sciences Faculty (communicates requirements related to NDE endorsements and accreditation processes; works collaboratively to update program requirements as endorsement requirements are modified); o Accreditation Review Coordination (prepares the Institutional Report; oversees and designates responsibilities for data analysis & folio development per program to specified Program Directors); o Teacher Education Candidate Records (oversees database management of Teacher Education candidate records including applications for Teacher Education program; practicum evaluations; Teacher Education Handbook signature sheets; criminal background checks; intervention records; Praxis I and II results). Certification Officer (complies with all Rules governing recommending candidates for certification; maintains all certification records and submits all required forms) 004.02B Certification Officer. The institution shall designate a faculty or staff member to receive correspondence regarding this chapter and to oversee the submission of certified records, transcripts, reports, and/or recommendations to the Department for the purpose of certification and/or endorsement. Recertification and Added Endorsements (reviews all applicants seeking recertification and added endorsements; develops plans for students and submits appropriate documentation once requirements have been completed) Primary representative to State Level Committees o NCTE (Nebraska Council on Teacher Education) o NACTE (Nebraska Association of Colleges for Teacher Education)
Title II Report Preparation (prepares and submits all state and federal reports in compliance with mandates) NDE Folio Reviews (has participated in completing NDE Folio Reviews for other institutions as member of Review Team) Primary Author Annual College Assessment Report on Undergraduate Teacher Education Programs Teacher Education Program Responsibilities Program Communication and Presentation (reviews and supervises updates of all program materials including Teacher Education Handbooks, forms, brochures, program websites for consistency of format and presentation to the community) Chairs Teacher Education Department Meetings (plans agendas; disseminates information and coordinates departmental work with faculty members; coordinates collaborative work on program outcomes review and revisions; reviews program compliance with designated program outcomes; reviews course syllabi and textbook selection for consistency with program outcomes) Chairs Teacher Education Committee Meetings (convenes Teacher Education Committee that reviews all applicants to the Teacher Education Program and applicants for Student Teaching and chairs intervention/special meetings with all undergraduate and graduate students as required; takes action on program acceptance and continuing status of all students) Organizes and facilitates Teacher Education Advisory Board Meetings (solicits names for Advisory Board members from faculty members; contacts potential members; coordinates timing and agenda of advisory board meetings) Student Recruitment & Advising (meets with prospective students including those primarily interested in Special Education, but also meets with students interested in Early Childhood Education, Secondary Education, and Elementary Education; conducts transcript analysis for prospective transfer students) Course Scheduling (oversees course sequencing and semester schedules for all Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Middle/Secondary Education courses (undergraduate) and all Special Education courses (undergraduate & graduate)) Hiring and Supervision of Teacher Education Faculty (supervises and evaluates all Teacher Education Faculty teaching in the undergraduate programs; hires adjunct faculty in Elementary Education, Special Education, Middle/Secondary Education, English as a Second Language, and Physical Education programs)
Student Teaching Assignments (supervises coordinator of clinical assignments for all undergraduate students and non-master of Arts in Teaching certification-seeking students consistent with their endorsement areas) General Responsibilities Serves as an Academic Advisor (advises students in undergraduate programs including Special Education, Elementary Education, Physical Education, and Middle/Secondary Education) o Advises and maintains advising files for GCERT candidates o Co-advises OT SPE minors Student Teacher Observations (observes student teachers upon request or as required in the case of special intervention with students who may face challenges during student teaching) Writing Letters of Recommendation (prepares letters of recommendation for scholarship applications or upon completion of the program upon student requests) Serves as a Doctoral committee chair or committee member upon request Institutional Responsibilities Committee Service (serves on committees, task forces or AQIP working groups as appointed or elected). This is a challenge due to the small number of faculty members in the Professional Studies Division and the frequent request for expertise of education faculty for committee service. o Strategic Planning Committee Director of SMART (Science, Math, and Relevant Technology) Program Coordinates Liberty Partnership for EDU 350 & SPE 430 (coordinates and arranges placements for students enrolled in EDU 350 and SPE 430 in partnership with Liberty Elementary School) Coordinates Crestview partnership Work Study Coordinator Professional and Community Service Responsibilities Committee Service (serves as a member and/or in an elected position on professional and community agency committees and boards representing areas of expertise in education related areas)
