The bachelor s degree combines the strength of the liberal arts with the specific training of pre-professional education. Students obtain a knowledge base and competencies that are central to understanding global trends, processes, and impacts. These learning objectives are accomplished through core coursework in historical, economic, political, social, and cultural phenomena; specialized classes in one of five tracks; mastery of a foreign language; a study abroad experience where the student implements cultural competency skills; and an overseas internship where the student applies cross-cultural work skills in a job setting. Career Opportunities The Global Studies program prepares students to excel as members of the global generation. As our society becomes ever more interconnected with other parts of the world, this program prepares students to confront future challenges and to take full advantage of emerging opportunities. Today s job market demands the ability to function effectively in multicultural and international environments. This rigorous program accommodates a wide range of individual interests and career goals because of its affiliation with multiple schools and colleges at UWM: College of Letters and Science, Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business, School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SA- RUP), and the School of Information Studies (SOIS). Job opportunities abound for those with an interdisciplinary and culturally-savvy background. A global perspective is valued in virtually every occupation. UWMilwLetSci Global Communications Track The Global Communications track focuses on the relevance of language, culture, and identity in understanding innovations in and applications of technology, media, communications, information science, and technology transfer. This track will allow students to build technical competencies while also grounding them in a broader understanding of technology s impact on human lives. Students in this track have a range of options which provide preparation for careers in fields such as marketing, international business, advertising, information technology, new media, and translation. The degree is awarded by the College of Letters and Science. Students who complete 21 or more of their credits in the School of Information Studies will have their Global Studies degree jointly awarded by the and the School of Information Studies. Global Management Track The Global Management track, focusing on the impact of globalization on business and the world economy, will prepare students as future managers capable of analyzing transnational issues; strategizing within a global, cross-cultural context; and implementing projects with a strong understanding of globalization s implications for the private and public sectors. This track will prepare students to assume leadership roles in many areas, but it will be advantageous especially in such fields as international business, consulting, education, government, and public policy. In addition, graduates of this track will meet all of the foundation course for admission to the UWM MBA program. The degree is jointly awarded by the College of Letters and Science and the Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business.
Letters and Science College of Global Security Track The Global Security track examines the changing conceptions and conditions shaping global security. In addition to exploring traditional notions of security based on the nation-state and the international system, coursework in this track considers a wide range of issues including global health, the environment, human rights, peacebuilding efforts, 21st-century conflict, social movements, migration, ethnicity, and identity. This track will prepare students for careers relevant to various aspects of global conflict management and/ or sustainability, such as those in government agencies and diplomacy, nonprofit organizations, international organizations, and the public policy community. The degree is awarded by the College of Letters and Science. Global Sustainability Track The Global Sustainability track develops student expertise in the diverse concepts of global sustainability and their application to development fields. Students following this track are expected to recognize and explain principles of sustainability in human, environmental, and governance systems as well as evaluate and identify methods for planning and implementing sustainable development strategies in differing contexts. This track affords graduates a range of career options, including positions such as sustainability specialists/ coordinators/officers, educators/outreach coordinators, and project managers who may work in industry, consultancy, utilities, regulatory agencies, nonprofits, governmental agencies, and nongovernmental organizations. Students also are prepared to enter graduate programs in sustainability. This degree is awarded by the College of Letters and Science. Global Urban Development Track The Global Urban Development track will help students acquire a holistic understanding of the global dimensions and local variations of urban development, the histories and economies of global cities, the causes and implications of urban growth, and nuances of international development as applied to changing global scenarios. This track will prepare students for further professional studies and careers in architecture, urban planning, public policy, community development, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The degree is jointly awarded by the College of Letters and Science and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. It was created for students wishing to combine their interest in international issues with pre-professional studies. International Studies is a liberal arts major offered through the. International Studies majors can choose from three options: Option A: International politics and world affairs Option B: International economics and development Option C: World s and Cultures The foreign language and overseas are significant differences between the two programs. Global Studies degree students must achieve the equivalent of eight semesters of foreign language study, while International Studies majors are required to complete fourteen credits (about four semesters) of a single foreign language. In addition, Global Studies students must study abroad and complete an internship abroad. Study Abroad Global Studies students are required to study abroad for the equivalent of one semester in order to understand and analyze fully the complex effects of globalization. Additionally, study abroad challenges students to become proficient in a foreign language. Understanding that study abroad is a financial burden for many UWM students, the Center for International Education consults with students not only on the destination options, but also on available financial aid options.
