Tedi Bear s Insurance Activity Book Brought to you by the Texas Department of Insurance

The Texas Department of Insurance is a state agency. We do not sell insurance.

Say hello to Tedi Bear! Tedi Bear works at the Texas Department of Insurance. People call the Texas Department of Insurance TDI for short. Look at the letters in TDI. They almost spell Tedi s name! What s your first name? Tedi wants to be your friend. Join him through this activity book to learn more about insurance! 1 1

What is insurance? Insurance is something you buy to protect the things you own. If something you own gets broken, insurance can help you fix it. When you buy insurance, you get a piece of paper called an insurance policy. The insurance policy tells you what things your insurance will help you pay to fix. INSURANCE POLICY 2 Tedi s Tip: It s good to have insurance for everything that s important to you! 2

Car Insurance If your parents have a car, they should have car insurance. The law says they must have insurance if they drive in Texas. When you get old enough to drive, you must get car insurance too. Car insurance is important because if you have a wreck, you have to pay for any damage you caused. Tedi s Tip: Every time you get in a car, buckle your seat belt! For your safety, it is against the law to ride in a car in Texas without wearing a seat belt. If you are under 12 years old, you should sit in the back seat to be extra safe! If you are under 8, you must sit in a booster seat. 3 3

Dental Insurance If you have dental insurance, it will help your parents pay for you to go to the dentist. Dental insurance helps pay for the dentist to check, X-ray, and clean your teeth! 6 Tedi s Tip: Brush your teeth every morning and every night. This will help keep your teeth and gums healthy. 7

Health Insurance Have you been to the doctor lately? If your parents have health insurance, the insurance probably paid for most of your doctor visit. It is important to have health insurance. If you get sick, health insurance can pay to help you get better. Even if you are healthy, health insurance will pay for regular check-ups so you can stay healthy. Tedi s Tip: Remember to eat your fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of milk, and get lots of play time so you can grow up to be healthy and strong. 7 8

Pet insurance will help pay for all those vet trips! Find the line that will help Tedi get his dog. Tedi s Tip: Take good care of your pet, and give your pet lots of love. 12 11

Homeowners Insurance Your parents probably have homeowners insurance if they own your home. If something happens to your house, insurance will help you pay to fix it or build a new one! Tedi s Tip: Plan an escape route from your house in case of an emergency. Practice it with your family so you ll know where to go if there is a fire or bad storm and you have to get out of your house. 13 11 12

Emergency checklist Insurance can help, but being safe is always the best idea. 16 Will you be ready in an emergency? Check off the things you have or do already I wear my seat belt or booster seat every time I ride in a car. I wear a helmet when I ride a bike. I am always with an adult when I go swimming. If there is a fire, I know how to get out of my house and I know where to go when I get outside. I know how to dial 9-1-1 if there is an emergency. I know my address, phone number, and full name if I have to ask a grown up for help. I look both ways before I cross the street. I know never to get in a car with strangers, even if they say they know me or my parents. My family has a first aid kit, and I know where it is. When I wait for a bus, I stand on the sidewalk or grass never in the street. I do not play in the street. 16
