Help Desk Hub Glossary of Terms 2015 Underwriters Laboratories Inc.
Assessment: Registration Data is used to perform an Assessment for the retailer or recipient. The Assessment provides data necessary to the recipient to comply with various regulations. Battery (Stand Alone): Product registration specific to the battery itself. The battery may be used in a separate registration, or sold directly to the consumer at a retail location. Battery registrations, upon completion of the assessment, will be added to WERCSmart for selection in Battery-Containing Product registrations. Full formula details are required as well as other data and documentation. Battery Data Sheet: Battery (Stand Alone) registrations will accept a Battery Data Sheet during registration. The Battery Data Sheet outlines various possible hazards, or lack of hazards, for the battery. Battery-Containing Product: A Battery-Containing Product (BCP) is an article which includes a battery in the package, or within the product itself, at the time the item is sold to the consumer. BCP registration data requires selection of a pre-registered Battery (Stand Alone). 2
Cancelled: Registration Data may be cancelled, resulting in no assessment being performed, for various reasons. Cancellation may be made to the Help Desk Representative by a customer; or if there is no response to a hold notification or issue within 10 business days, registrations will be cancelled and will not be reactivated for assessment. CAS Number: Chemical Abstract Services (CAS) Registry of a chemical substance results in a numeric number to be assigned. WERCSmart formula entry requires the use of valid CAS numbers. If CAS numbers are not found, WERCSmart does allow entry using ingredient names, and will display the CAS number for the ingredient. Data Feed: The assessment report, UPC information and required document (SDS, Label, or other registration document) is provided to the retailer or recipient via data transfer of the assessment file. This is the data feed process. 3
Formulated Product Registration WERCSmart data collected on a product that includes chemical formula data. Examples of a Formulated Product are Shampoos, Motor Oils, Aerosol Cooking Oil, Vitamins. GHS: Globally Harmonized Standard. The United Nations determined a worldwide method for classification and labeling of chemicals. This Standard impacts the SDS information. GRAS Statement: Generally Recognized as Safe per the FDA Regulations. http://www.fda.gov/food/ingredientspackaginglabeling/gras/default.htm IFRA Certificate: International Fragrance Association. An IFRA may be required when using a generic fragrance ingredient during the registration of a formulated product. Fragrance manufacturers will provide you with an IFRA, if requested. Fragrance ingredients may contain irritants, sensitizers, solvents, marine pollutants and other items that may be covered under various regulations. 4
Hold: While an Assessment is being performed on the registration data, questions or issues may arise that need to be addressed before the assessment can be performed in full. The data will be placed on hold, or suspended, from being assessed until the WERCSmart customer resolves the issue. Notifications of products placed on hold are provided via Message Center in WERCSmart, and via Help Desk Hub ticket notification to the specific user s email for the product. Kit, Gift Pack, Multi-Pack: Combining two (2) or more unrelated product registrations that share a UPC. Product Registrations that are to be used in a kit, must be registered and have the assessment process completed before it is eligible to be used in a Kit Registration. Label: Formulated Product Registrations that utilize the Category of Over the Counter or Nutritional Supplement during WERCSmart registration, require a product label be uploaded. An SDS is optional on these registration types. The label must include the full label picture, including the back where ingredients (active and inactive) are listed. 5
Non-Formulated Product Registration: Registrations which are considered non-formulated are items that include a battery (when sold); are electronics that may not include a battery, but have a circuit board; or are Kits. Not Yet Submitted (WERCSpace Status): Product registration data which has begun but it not finalized, or accepted, by the customer. Items not yet submitted are not eligible for assessment. Recertification: Product Registration data may be revised, after initial registration and assessment, due to various changes. The changes may be due to regulatory requirements, retailer requirements, or at the discretion of the WERCSmart customer. Registration: WERCSmart collects data on various aspects of products. A product may be required to be submitted via the WERCSmart system (registration) as a retailer requirement. Registration requirements are expanding regularly, based on regulatory needs. 6
Regulatory Specialist: For WERCSmart, a Regulatory Specialist is the person who reviews and assesses the registration data. SDS: Safety Data Sheet. The document is regulated by various governmental agencies (US is OSHA) and is under the United Nations standard for Global Harmonization of data (GHS). The document provides information about a product for use in Workplace Safety Programs. Technical Data Sheet: Battery (Stand Alone) registrations will accept a Technical Data Sheet during registration. The TDS outlines various possible hazards, or lack of hazards, for the battery. UPC: Universal Product Code. Product Registrations made for the purpose of a specific retailer will require UPC entry. WERCSmart systems, unlike some retailer-specific systems, require check digits be included on all 12- and 14-digit UPC entries. Check Digit Calculator: http://www.gs1us.org/resources/tools/check-digit-calculator 7
VOC: Volatile Organic Compound. Chemicals that vaporize at room temperature, enter into the atmosphere, or may contribute to air pollution, may be considered VOC. The EPA, and several specific States, regulated VOC content in products. Various product registration types may require entry of VOC data, such as items covered under South Coast Air Quality Management (SCAMD), California Air Resources Board (CARB) and Ozone Transport Commission (OTC). 8
