Craigs Investment Partners & FMG Introducing the key features of our strategic alliance Together we re building an even stronger future
In partnership In 2009, Craigs Investment Partners formed a strategic alliance with Farmers Mutual Group (FMG). Whilst both Craigs Investment Partners and FMG still maintain our distinct identities, our association enables us to work more closely together to provide investment advice and specialist rural insurance services to clients across the rural heartland of New Zealand. Both companies share the same core values and objectives to offer a high quality service and personalised solutions that meet the needs of our valued clients. It made sense to work more closely together to the benefit of both businesses in the support, development and prosperity of our rural clients. A word from the CEOs Frank Aldridge - MD, Craigs Investment Partners Craigs Investment Partners strategic alliance with FMG signifies our ongoing commitment to supporting New Zealand s rural community. For several decades, the world has looked to our country s agricultural sector for innovation and leadership. Our primary sector continues to generate over 50% of New Zealand s total export earnings; the country is one of the top five dairy exporters in the world and the dairy industry is the country s biggest export earner. Helping the people behind our agricultural and commercial enterprises to identify and successfully manage risk is vital to our ongoing prosperity. Our relationship with FMG is an exciting opportunity for both parties and our respective clients. The synergy between our two companies enables our clients to receive the benefits of shared specialist knowledge and expertise in Investment Advisory from Craigs and Risk Management solutions from FMG. Chris Black - CEO, FMG Since 1995, FMG has provided its clients with access to high quality investment advisory service focused on helping them achieve their financial goals. FMG is committed to ensuring this continues into the future. In 2009, we decided to take a different approach to the provision of investment advisory services for clients. We spent several months seeking a strategic partner with a proven track record and strong reputation for providing clients with high quality research and independent investment advice. We are pleased to align ourselves with Craigs Investment Partners in order to provide an expanded investment advisory service for our clients. Craigs philosophy of providing professional advice backed up by personalised service mirrors the model FMG has in other parts of its business. Investment Advice in the rural community Many of Craigs Investment Partners rural community clients have not only continued to expand their farming assets, but have also developed very significant off-farm investment portfolios. One of the most important goals of investing is to maintain the real spending power of your investments. This is best achieved through managing risk, not chasing returns. Investing and farming are similar in that risk cannot be entirely avoided, but investments can be tailored in order to minimise market risk and maximise potential returns. Any decision to invest back into the farm, is often governed by the need to repay debt or the need for farm redevelopment, livestock, equipment or land purchase. There are often sound financial reasons for directing profits back into the farm, however investing beyond the farm can be a prudent long-term solution. Craigs Investment Partners Advisors understand that farm succession planning is an important issue. It can be difficult to find the time to discuss and agree upon a plan that suits all parties and that addresses many of the key issues including the need to: Plan early for the reality of succession and retirement Ensure that a clear plan exists to ensure buy-in from all interested parties Maintain the quality and yield of the farm as a viable long-term business Provide an acceptable retirement income and access to capital to the current owner Ensure that wherever possible, successors are not over-burdened with debt Ensure fairness to family members including those not involved in farming Provide certainty to enable the current farmer to retire Ensure that general well-being is maintained into retirement Ensure the possibility of continued inter-generational ownership Provide an opportunity for key employees to purchase in the event of sale Use advisors that take time to understand the family, the farm and the business and not just focus on the solution remotely Craigs Investment Partners Advisors will spend time with you to fully understand how best to achieve your future goals taking into account: Existing investments (on and off the farm) Existing Superannuation Scheme Assets (including KiwiSaver and New Zealand Super entitlements) Current and proposed farm ownership structure (including trusts) Existing debt and debt structures and future funding requirements Timing of your future needs Attitude to investment risk (risk profile) Farm succession, like farming, takes time to successfully achieve. Craigs Investment Partners experienced Investment Advisors partner with you to understand your needs in order to make succession a reality. This contributes towards your future financial security and provides peace of mind for you and your family. 4 Craigs Investment Partners & FMG - 4/11
Risk management & Diversification Understanding risk is key to both FMG and Craigs Investment Partners advisory businesses. Whether we partner with you or your business, we both help identify and manage risk in order that you can get on with what you do best; building assets, creating wealth and sustaining New Zealand s unique rural landscape and economic competitiveness. Farmers face multiple, often simultaneous, sources of risk natural disasters, market volatility, disease and regulatory pressures. A farmer s business strategy should comprise some form of risk management in order to protect the economic value of the business. FMG s risk management review service involves a discussion of your business strategy and management approach, followed by a collaborative assessment of your major farming risks. A comprehensive written report is then prepared outlining your key risks, potential management strategies and contingency plans around these risks and an insurance solution to complement your preferred management approach. FMG s national team of Rural Managers, partner with customers to ensure that the insurance policy is tailored to your needs and that the ongoing costs of insurance are minimised by the adoption of the practical steps to reduce the frequency and value of claims, whilst ensuring that in the event of a claim that they are paid without delay. Protect and grow your wealth through diversification Like any industry, farming has its ups and downs and external factors such as a change in commodity prices and exchange rates can affect your revenue. Investing beyond the farm can help you preserve and grow your capital in a diversified manner. Diversification can spread the risk of your investments underperforming because of a bad year on the farm. You may also want to consider investing beyond the farm if your circumstances have changed due to a significant windfall, sale of an asset or you start to plan for your life beyond the farm when you retire. Diversification can also be achieved by having several income sources, such as on-farm businesses and off-farm income (investments or savings), to help counter negative fluctuations in farm income and to: Spread the risk of having all your eggs in one basket Source an income stream from beyond the farm Help mitigate the changes in your asset value and income from the fluctuations in currency and commodity prices Maintain the real spending power of your savings by minimising the effect of inflation 5
Case Study One Case Study Two Manawatu Dairy Farmers Taieri Sheep Farmers, Otago Our clients have been farming in the Manawatu for over 30 years. Their business has expanded over this time and they now employ four full time staff. Our clients own a 420-hectare sheep farm in Otago employing five staff. Having taken on the farm in 1979, they have continued to make good progress despite the ongoing environmental and economic challenges. They were introduced to their local Craigs Investment Partners Advisor, as successful retirement from farming was starting to become a big issue. Our clients wanted to ensure they had a plan in place that would be fair to both their children, one of whom was working on the farm and had indicated his desire to take up the reigns when the time came. After a series of discussions with their Craigs Investment Partners Advisor, it was clear that there were a number of goals. They wanted to maintain the farm whilst increasing their off-farm investment to create a pool of capital that would not only fund their retirement, but also ensure that farm assets could pass to their son, whilst their daughter would be treated fairly. The Investment Advisor commented, Initially we spent a considerable amount of time understanding the farm and the needs of the family. Thereafter, we developed a detailed plan that everyone could agree upon. Our clients were able to make a number of key decisions that ensured the farm was fully maintained as a viable business and gave peace of mind to everyone involved both on and off the farm. When the time comes, their son will then take overall control and responsibility for the business. 6 Craigs Investment Partners & FMG - 4/11 They were introduced to their local FMG Rural Manager in order to obtain advice and to receive a quotation for their increasing insurance premiums, which had escalated significantly following flood damage and two subsequent insurance claims during 2010. After an initial discussion and tour of the farm, their FMG Rural Manager undertook a detailed risk management review and this returned a number of interesting results. Their FMG Rural Manager commented, What became apparent was that whilst the business was being run on a sound business footing, our clients could take a number of simple steps to reduce the potential for future claims and in doing so this would help with limiting possible future increases in premiums. In addition, FMG highlighted a number of gaps in their existing cover. The potential for accident, severe weather or even natural disasters to impact any business is something we are frequently reminded of. For our clients, FMG s Business Pak included Business Interruption Insurance that was a logical and effective solution to protect not only the business, but the five families and rural businesses they support.
