Outdoor Device Operation Garmin Outdoor device operation can be categorised into 2 categories 1. Button operated devices 2. Touchscreen operated devices
GLONASS GLONASS is the Russian equivalent of the American GPS system. By utilizing both GPS and GLONASS Garmin devices are able to orientate themselves quicker, and maintain a stronger signal. GPS Only GPS & GLONASS The following Garmin Outdoor units have this feature: etrex 10/20/30, GPSMAP 64/64s, Oregon 600/650, Montana 600/650, Monterra

Waterproofness (IPX7) All Garmin Outdoor devices are rated to be IPX7 waterproof. The test for IPX7 rating addresses the possibility of moisture damage from submersion in water. For IPX7 testing, the unit is submerged in 1 meter of water for a period of 30 minutes. 1 meter 30 minutes
Area Calculation The area calculator on Garmin Outdoor devices is ideal for agricultural use to determine the size of a piece of land. Simply start the feature, walk/drive around the piece of land you want to measure, and the device will tell you the size of the area.
Electronic Compass How does an electronic compass work? An electronic compass does not rely on GPS signals to determine direction. As such, it does not rely on movement to know your direction. Therefore if you turn around in one spot with the GPS, the compass will continue to point in the correct direction. Garmin GPS units with an electronic compass feature has additional hardware built into them so they are a little more expensive than units without it. Older electronic compass units needed to be held as level as possible to obtain accurate readings. A Garmin GPS with a 3 axis tilt compensated electronic compass does not have to be held level in order to get accurate compass readings.
Electronic Compass Sight N Go feature Garmin units with an Electronic compass also offer users the ability to use the Sight N Go feature. The Sight N Go feature allows the user to point the device in a certain direction, or at a landmark and lock that direction. The unit will then show the user in which direction the landmark or point is even when the visibility of the landmark or point is obscured by trees, buildings, mountains or canyons. To use the Sight N Go feature, go to the compass page, press menu, then select Sight N Go. Point the device in the direction you wish to go, and select Lock Direction. Select whether you would like to set a course (just travel in that direction) or to project as a waypoint (set a distance to travel in that direction for)
Barometric Altimeter The barometric altimeter tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude, and to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions. The following Garmin Outdoor units have this feature: ForeTrex 401, etrex 30, GPSMAP 64s, Dakota 20, Oregon 600/650, Montana 600/650, fēnix, fēnix 2
Cameras and Geotagging GPS with integrated camera: To compliment Garmin Outdoor range, we make high end devices with built-in digital cameras This is ideal for Photo referenced navigation and Geo-tagging (storing coordinates of where the photo was taken in the meta data of the photo) so users can navigate back to the exact spot the photo was taken. The following Garmin Outdoor units have this feature: Oregon 650, Montana 650, Monterra

Geocaching What is Geocaching? Geocaching is a game where treasures known as caches have been hidden around the world. You then have to find these hidden treasures by using a GPS, GPS coordinates, and clues.
Geocaching What is Opencaching? At Garmin we believe that geocaching should be as free and open as the great outdoors, so we built a place where anyone with an Internet connection and a compatible GPS-enabled device can upload, download and log caches - www.opencaching.com. No subscriptions, membership fees or paid content. That doesn t mean we ve sacrificed any features, though. With support for a broad range of GPS-enabled devices, including those Garmin units with eco-friendly paperless geocaching capabilities it s the perfect tool for everyone from beginners to advanced trekkers.
