Among the Top Ranked in the World Since 2013 the University of Belgrade holds a place between 301 to 400 on the prestigious global rank list of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), aka Shanghai Ranking. This puts it among five best ranked university from the East and South-East Europe. Within two specific scientific fields, Mathematics and Physics, the University is ranked between 151 to 200 universities. All study programs have been harmonized with the principles of the Bologna Declaration, with the aim to make the University of Belgrade a part of the Common European Education Area with an emphasis on mobility of students and teaching staff. Education Studies conducted at the faculties of the University have been adapted to the principles of the Bologna Declaration. The University of Belgrade offers academic and professional studies. Academic studies are divided into the following levels: undergraduate academic studies (lasting three to four years, granting 180 to 240 ECTS upon their successful completion), master academic studies (lasting from one to two years and granting, upon their completion, 60 to 120 ECTS), specialized academic studies (lasting at least one year and granting, upon their completion, at least 60 ECTS) and International Cooperation As an institution committed to national and international cooperation, the University of Belgrade maintains a wide variety of relations with cultural, scientific, and higher education institutions around the globe, promoting academic and student mobility. This has been an everlasting commitment of the University of Belgrade. What so clearly supports this aim are the signed bilateral agreements of cooperation with more than 200 foreign universities and other higher education institutions, membership in the European Universities Association (EUA), Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe (UNICA), the Balkan Universities Network, the Danube Rectors Conference (DRC), Black Sea University Network (BSUN), the Network of Universities and Research Centers of the Adriatic-Ionian Region (UNIADRION), the Agency of the Francophonic Universities (AUF), DAAD, the Educational Committee of the Council of Europe, UNESCO and other organizations that contribute to the development of education, science and culture. doctoral academic studies (lasting three years and granting 180 ECTS upon their successful completion). About the University of Belgrade A Short History Studying at the University of Belgrade offers an incredibly rewarding experience. Since its founding, the University of Belgrade has witnessed many turbulent historical events and changes, each time contributing significantly to the further development of the country and society. In Serbia, it stands out as the university that trains the highest number of professionals in a wide variety of fields of study, while its international success continuously strengthens its position of the leading higher education institution in the region. What makes it competitive is its prompt and continuous adjustment to the challenges of modern times, combined with all the good experience from its long tradition established on the values and ideas of the Enlightenment. The founding father of the University of Belgrade was one of the leading regional intellectuals and philosophers of the time - Dositej Obradović. He founded the Velika Škola (Great School) in 1808, which grew into the University of Belgrade the most important academic institution of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, also well recognized throughout Europe. During WWII the University was closed, while its students and professors left a significant mark in the Yugoslav struggle against fascism. After the war the University saw rapid expansion in students and departments, growing into one of the largest universities in the Balkans. The University s main building was the mansion of one of the wealthiest Serbs of the time, Captain Miša Anastasijević, who gave it as a gift to his motherland. The building was built in 1863 and declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979. To this day it stands for one of the most beautiful buildings in Belgrade. Research With a long tradition as a research university, the University of Belgrade has been the main contributor and driver of economic growth and social development of the Republic of Serbia. Professors, researchers and associates of the University of Belgrade make the largest part of the research potential of Serbia. They are involved in a wide area of basic, applied and interdisciplinary research supported by national, bilateral, regional and EU funds. The attractive research environment at 31 faculties and 11 research institutes is a strong basis for doctoral studies, yielding over 300 PhD theses a year. Excellence in research has made the University of Belgrade one of the top universities in South-Eastern and Eastern Europe.

Special courses of Serbian are offered by the Center for Serbian as a Foreign Language at the Faculty of Philology, as well as an on-line programs for distance learning. A number of faculties offer programs in English. More information about the programs offered in English can be found on the websites of the corresponding faculties. Students of the University of Belgrade have at their disposal 10,340 places in 11 student dormitories around the city s urban neighborhoods, as well as numerous student restaurants, medical facilities and cultural centers. A number of the University buildings date back from the 19th century. They are scattered around the most beautiful parts of Belgrade and they surely make an important part of the city s architecture and its cultural heritage. Former sites include the Museum of Vuk and Dositej and the Princess Ljubica s Residence, both sites recognized as Belgrade s topmost historic buildings. The City of Belgrade is the largest city in the region and the capital of Serbia with approximately 1.6 million inhabitants. It is situated on the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. Its museums, theaters, concert halls, parks, coffee shops and famous nightlife offer a wide variety of entertainment. Belgrade hosts many annual cultural events, including the Film Festival, Theatre Festival, Summer Festival, Music Festival, Book Festival and the Beer Fest. Monthly averages range from 0.4 o C (34.5 o F) in January to 23.0 o C (73.4 o F) in July.
