You have just been prescribed Lantus and/or Apidra in the prefilled SoloStar insulin pen. You can set dose levels of from 1 to 80 units in steps of 1 unit at a time. The quick guide contains information on how to use your SoloStar. You can find more detailed information in the instructions that come in the SoloStar packaging. You can also call 020-52 68 87 at any time and on any day for answers to your questions about sanofi-aventis's insulin pens.

SoloSTAR and its components Inner needle cap Needle Injection button Outer needle cap Pen cap Dose window Dosage knob Pen body Name and colour coding of the insulin Each SoloStar contains 300 units of insulin. Rubber seal Insulin reservoir The following needles are recommended for use with SoloStar: BD MicroFine+ (push and screw on) Artsana Insupen (push and screw on) Ypsomed PenFine (push on) Owen Mumford Unifine Pentips (push and screw on) For more information, go to www.insulin.se

How to get started 1 2 Check that you have the correct insulin. Lantus SoloStar is grey with a purple injection button. Apidra SoloStar is blue with a dark blue injection button. Remove the pen cap and check that the insulin is transparent. Attach a needle to the rubber seal, ensuring that it is properly aligned with the pen. Screw or push the needle on depending on which needle you are using. 7 Carry out a safety test prior to each injection 3 Select a dose of 2 units by turning the dosage knob clockwise. Remove the outer and inner needle covers. 4 Hold the pen with the needle pointing up. Get rid of any bubbles by tapping on the insulin reservoir. 5 Press the injection button all the way in. Check that there is insulin coming out of the tip of the needle and that the dose window is displaying 0.

Set the dose and inject 1 Set 2 your selected dose. If you turn the dosage knob past the unit you wish to inject, just turn it back to the correct unit. Inject your dose in the way that your diabetes nurse or doctor showed you. Stick the needle into your skin and press the injection button all the way in. As you inject, the dose window counts down to "0". 4 Put Once you have injected on the outer needle cap and unscrew the needle. Dispose of the needle in the way that you have been shown. Needlestick injuries are avoided by not using the inner needle cover. Put the pen cap on your Solo-Star and put it in a safe place. 3 Keep holding the injection button in for a count of 10, then pull the needle out. 10 sec. NB Always remove the needle after an injection to store the SoloStar without a needle. This helps to prevent contamination, air bubbles and insulin leakage.

Tips and advice If you are unable to set the required dose, check that there is sufficient insulin in the insulin reservoir. If there is not enough insulin left in your SoloStar, you can do one of the following: - Use the number of units of insulin left in your current SoloStar and inject the remainder of the dose from a new SoloStar, or - Inject the full dose using a new SoloStar. Hold the button in Insulin may continue dripping out of the needle for some time after you have pressed the injection button. You have to hold the button in for 10 seconds to make sure you get the full dose. Storage of your SoloSTAR Always keep an extra SoloStar in case you loose the one you are using or if it breaks for some reason. Before use Keep the SoloStar in a refrigerator until you need to start using it. When you take a new SoloStar from the refrigerator, it should be left at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours before use. In use Once you have taken a SoloStar out of the refrigerator, the insulin can be used for 28 days. During this time, you can keep your SoloStar at room temperature, but not above 25. Do not put the SoloStar back into the refrigerator or chiller pack. Do not leave your SoloStar anywhere where it might become overheated. Protect the SoloStar from sunlight. After 28 days you have to throw away your SoloStar whether or not there is any insulin left. Do not use your SoloStar after the expiry date shown on the pen or on the box. If you need to clean the outside of your SoloStar, you can wipe it down using a damp cloth. Do not soak or wash your SoloStar, and avoid using soap or solvents. If you have any questions about your SoloStar, feel free to call our 24-hour help line on 020-52 68 87.
