The Zutphen Hoard (1958) Addenda DNB Coins Paul Torongo & Raymond van Oosterhout 2016 Photographs: 2016 De Nederlandsche Bank After publishing our report on the leeuwengroten of the Zutphen Hoard (1958) to be found in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Zutphen (SMZ) [1], we received a detailed list of the 83 coins from the hoard that are currently held by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) [4] (for which we are most grateful to Erik van der Kam and DNB). Most of the coins were received by the Koninklijk Penningkabinet (KPK) as a donation from the hoard owners after the find was made [2]. 5 more were purchased for the DNB collection at the 1960 Schulman auction (ref. 3) [2], and a final coin was donated by Cees van Hengel [4]. The KPK collection, which was housed in Het Geldmuseum in Utrecht before it closed, is now in the care of DNB, which also has its own, separate collection. The Dutch National Numismatic Collection is also in the care of DNB (NNC-DNB). Because DNB is currently managing all of the coins (so to speak), they provide us with information and photographs, and at this point, we tend to speak of the coins as being DNB coins, regardless of their actual, legal ownership. The inventory numbers will give the reader some clue as to the legal owners of specific coins. Included in the 83 DNB coins from the Zutphen Hoard are 1 leeuwen from Flanders (Louis of Mâle), and 1 leeuwen and one ½ leeuwen of Brabant (Joanna and Wenceslas), all of which were part of the original donation, and all of which are of interest to authors Torongo and van Oosterhout. Adjustments to Our Original Report Because of the new information about the Zutphen Hoard coins in the DNB collection, the following adjustments must be made to our original report on the Hoard [2] : p. 1 226 Flanders leeuwengroten [67 whereabouts unknown = 29.6 %] 5 Brabant leeuwengroten [4 whereabouts unknown = 80 %] 27 Brabant ½ leeuwengroten [25 whereabouts unknown = 92.5 %] p. 8 158 Flanders leeuwengroten (of 226) are still in the SMZ collection, an unknown number were sold off by Schulman (item 774), 1 is in the DNB collection, leaving 67 coins sold or unaccounted for ( = 29.6 % ).

p. 8 (cont.) 0 Brabant leeuwengroten (of 5) are still in the SMZ, 1 was sold off by Schulman (item 759), 1 is in the DNB collection, leaving 3 coins completely unaccounted for ( = 60 % ). 1 Brabant ½ leeuwen (of 27) is still in the SMZ (03247), 1 was sold off by Schulman (item 759), 1 is in the DNB collection, leaving 24 coins completely unaccounted for ( = 88 % ). Zutphen Hoard Coins in the DNB Collection The following table of Zutphen Hoard (1958) coins in the DNB collection comes directly from DNB itself. We have done little more than translate the list from the original Dutch, and add the count numbers. The reference vg refers to van Gelder s 1958 article on the Zutphen Hoard (ref. 1) (highlighted in the table). We have not double-checked the references given, although we have added any missing vg references. Other abbreviations used: BMNA = Bulletin Mensuelle de Numismatique et d Archéologie DdP = Deschamps de Pas JMP = Jaarboek voor Munt- en Penningkunde NC = Numismatic Chronicle RBN = Revue Belge de la Numismatique The first count number (column 1) is the number out of the total 83 DNB coins, the second number is the count of that particular metal (gold or silver). The one coin listed as copper has been numbered among the silver coins. Because there are far more silver coins, we have

highlighted the gold coins so that they are easier to find in the table. Since it is the leeuwengroten that are of particular interest to us, we have highlighted those as well. See Appendix B (pp. 60-71) of our report [2] for van Gelder s list of the Zutphen Hoard (1958) contents (with corrections). Since the donation of 66 silver and 10 gold coins was already included in our original calculations, the coins listed in the table above do not affect the totals given in our original report on the Zutphen Hoard. The 5 silver coins purchased by DNB at the 1960 Schulman auction are included in our original unknown number of coins auctioned in 1960, and therefore do not affect the totals given in our report. The 5 coins come from different lots, from which multiple examples of the same type of coin were individually sold. The auction catalog does not indicate how many of each type were on offer, and the total number of silver coins from the Zutphen Hoard that were offered for sale at the 1960 Schulman auction is unknown. The provenance of the gold écu donated by van Hengel is unknown. It may have come from the Schulman auction (presumably from lots 832-835), in which case it was included in our original calculations. It may be one of the coins that were given out to the members of the board of directors of the bank [2], in which case it is likely to have been included in our original calculations (assuming the coins were distributed to the board members after van Gelder inspected the find s contents). If the van Hengel coin is a piece that was removed before van Gelder ever inspected the find [2], then it was not included in our original calculations nor in van Gelder s list of the coins found in the hoard. This last scenario does not seem probable, as the coins that were taken away when the found was first made are unlikely to have ever been re-associated with the label of their Zutphen Hoard origin. NOTES We are extremely grateful to Erik van der Kam and DNB for their assistance.
